Walking forward when his name is called, Hazrat chants a prayer. "Zhuanlun, Lord of Changes, smile upon me and grant me Good Fortune." He notices some odd glances as he does so, but he pays the onlookers no mind. This is a matter of fate, after all, and it would be foolish not to pay proper reverence to those who watch from beyond as destiny unfolds.

Meeting the Phoenix, Hazrat offers his hand only to catch himself and bow instead. "Are you Haruki? My name is Hazrat. It is a pleasure to meet you, and may we both honor our families with a good performance today."

He does some stretches to prepare and then adopts the Water stance, ready to move with the speed of the rushing river.

Waiting for the signal to start, he recited a mantra. "Zhuanlun, smile upon me."

When the signal comes, Hazrat pushes himself forward with every ounce of strength he has. He says the mantra once again, but it comes out more as a gasp than a proper prayer. "Fortune!"

Looking towards the first obstacle, Hazrat notices that it would be possible to push against Haruki in an attempt to knock him off the log while they cross. He has no intention of doing so, however. This is an obstacle course, but they have not been instructed to view one another as obstacles. He focuses instead on watching his footing and keeping up his initial pace. "Spirits of Earth and Sky, guide me."

"It's an honor to meet you too Hazrat-san, let's have a nice, clean run."

Haruki has been training with shugenja enough to know the spell his opponent casted, even if he's using the wrong language for it. So he takes it easy for the first sprint, letting him have his fun before working harder once the spell is finished. But then shows his foot work by leaping and kicking his feet and landing perfectly on the narrow bridge each time. (Think frog song from Loony Toons)

Impressed with Haruki's endurance and tenacity, Hazrat offers his hand after the two of them have crossed the finish line, not caring one bit about the mud on the Phoenix's clothes. "Whether the race was clean or messy, it was certainly invigorating! I haven't had a workout like that since the last Naadam festival!"

"I really should have followed my own advice huh?" He puts his hand on the shoulder, not accepting it as a handshake but more as a comforting action on a battlefield. He pretends like the pressure of the contest is making itself known. "Let's just hope I do better later."

Hazrat nods in commiseration. Despite the thrilling rush of blood that this event has brought, the thought of the afternoon's tests causes him some concern. "I am sure you will do much better in coming events, Haruki-san. If you would like, I can perform a divination to see how we might fare in future challenges some time."

"I would rather you not bother the kami for such a matter. Fate will do as it wills, regardless of whether or not I see it first. Besides, I can feel good things to come."

"Oh, it is no bother," replied Hazrat, still excited and not thinking very carefully about what he was saying. "The Ten Kings watch and judge our fates as we weave them, after all."

He stopped, his eyes suddenly wide and his body tense. "Or, anyway, yes, I am sure good fortune will come your way. No need to bother the spirits."
