He looks to Saburo in the starting line and bows respectfully. The obscene amount of light still made his head dizzle, but even then he got a strong start. Aiichiro descalates shortly after however, due to his body aching on all points more or less still.

Saburo bowed to Aiichiro, but it was readily apparent that he seemed somehow distracted today. It wasn't like his mind wasn't on the event. In fact, he seemed to be staring at the course with the intensity one would a viper found on the road a short distance away, hoping that the thing did not decide to slither in their direction. The Kaiu's injuries from the prior day weren't even in his mind at the moment, as focused as he was on the rest of the match. Perhaps afterwards, but not right now.

"A good race to you, Kaiu-san," he said with as much distant cordiality as he could muster. When the race was started, he barely noticed the call but caught up quickly. Any hint of the Kakita's recommendations was utterly out of his mind at this point. Adaptability? He just needed to make sure his damned balance held the entire race. At least he was much faster on his feet than he used to be.

Saburo did well running in front of him and even crossed the mud traps first, but he didn't fall on it and did not attempt to pull Saburo out either.

Saburo wasn't paying attention to Aiichiro, who navigated the log far more easily than him. The only thing he could even think of right then was the absolutely filthy conditions below, and how he would be absolutely aghast were he to have fallen into it. It had him so discomfitted that, while he was managing to keep pace with the Kaiu, the Crab caught up to him in the second straightaway.

A kiai shout and a lunge for the rope were taken with a silent, fervant prayer to Jurojin... one which was blessedly answered, landing him on the other side, and keeping the two of them neck and neck.

He bypassed Saburo in the mud pit trap, but was losing velocity quickly as the last boulder approached. Even though he continued to feel his legs somewhat uncomfortably and his head hurt, he was now animated, feeling alive.

As Aiichiro sought his second wind, Saburo was vaulting off of the rope and past the mud trap towards the wall, racing like there were a pack of goblins on his heels. His eyes were a little wide for a second there as he took back the lead, a wheezing sound coming from him, and a sort of maddened desperation. He wanted over that wall and away from this filthy, insane place.

[Kaiu Aiichiro]

The jokes with the Kaiu were acurrate, laughably. They knew their walls very well. Actually, much of his training consisted into climbling engines in the simulation of what would be the middle of a war consistently, as well climbing physical obstacles inside the Shadowlands, or your way out of a surprise pit.

Saburo was no expert on walls. However what he had demonstrated was that the one wall that kicked his rear over a year ago had become something of a permanent sore spot for him. Either way, when he hit the wall, he just kept scrambling until he pounded down, ready for the final sprint. Those amber eyes of his were obviously tired, but there was no way he was going to lose his footing now.

"HONOR!"

They had both saved something for the end, it seemed. As he took off at a run, Aiichiro got to hear the gasping shout of Saburo as he planted his foot against the back of the wall and pounded off. His eyes were practically wild with fury, and he looked like death on legs, the pallor returning as he stormed at full force towards the finish line with every last meager ounce of energy in his body and soul, crossing just ahead of the Kaiu.

Honestly, the proctors were a little impressed with both their performances. Both had run very well today.
