The Answer? More Tea! (Expecting)

[Toritaka Sasaiko]

Sasaiko's eyes widen slightly as the lesson takes for her.

She bows her head.

"Thank you for the lesson, Bayushi-sensei. I will remember it."

She pauses.

"I imagine that other...explanations could be substituted to suit the audience and purpose."

“Of course. It always depends on your audience”

[Toritaka Sasaiko]

Sasaiko nods.

"How might one analyze an audience to make a more effective rhetorical appeal in such a situation, Bayushi-sensei?"

"Through practice, knowledge of etiquette, and getting to know them beforehand."

Sasaiko nods again. She does not ask a follow-up this time, not because she does not have one, but because she knows there are other students seeking the sensei's wisdom. So she instead begins to clean up what is available to be cleaned up.

"I have heard of a game of letters sometimes used among the courts. Is that the sort of situation where these things might be applied? It seems a rather layered thing," Saburo said, looking over at the two of them. It inadvertantly gave the Utaku the lead in to ask about calligraphy-related topics as well, giving them all the kind of lesson that they desired.

Ichiro had not heard of any such thing though lately he had better luck than expected with courtly matters. Still an initial failing did bother him, "Letters would certainly help me practice my calligraphy. Though I know Moto-sensei will not care I do not like feeling I have fallen behind the others present here on that."

“Then shall we try our hands at the game? Each of you write a letter and hand it to me and close your eyes, then I will give each of you someone’s letter for you to determine who sent it!”

Ichiro, having the poorer script, was likely easy to discern. Still he does his best to not make it obvious so there might be some challenge. The letter itself simply a small description of a crow seen earlier that day.

Sasaiko nods, finds paper and ink and writes a brief poem--to great effect, if in lesser script.

Thawing winter's end
Buds beginning to break free
Wonder when open

He was careful how he wrote that one. It was as easily an educational effort as it was something else entirely. The poem was passable, which sort of suited the actual playwright's limited gifts with haiku, but he did a far more tolerable job leaving any hint of other implied emotions well buried in it while making sure the message was on clean, elegant calligraphy.
