Jiro absorbed the information quietly. "Interesting. In what sense is Yasuki-san 'marked'?"

"The... discolorings on his face," she said plainly, frowning at having to be so direct about the reference. "I thought nothing of them at first, myself, but Kakita Kenji-san mentioned that Yasuki-san was 'marked by fate', as if he knew more about it. It seems likely that is what he was referring to."

"Hmmm... Curious. Of course, as we have established, fate can mean so many things. Those who are touched or cursed by the spirit realms, or those merely struck with a streak of terrible, lingering misfortune. My sense is that Yasuki-san fits in the latter category, but who can be certain?"

"It may not matter the degree he is touched," she said, folding her hands into her lap to keep them still. "With more than one here, and the implication that there may be many more than those we have already named as possibilities, just being here could add to the concentration of spiritual energy. Like a drop of ink. A single one falling into water will be distilled and unnoticeable. A dozen will discolor the water. An entire jar and it's simply more ink."
