Ugh, this weather. But Saburo was feeling good after having completed his daily training in a field for which he barely had any training, demonstrating some level of breadth in his capacities. So, when he came to the test of calligraphy, he was in... surprisingly good spirits. This was to say, he looked like a man who might collapse if someone sneezed in his general direction, with sunken yellow eyes that screamed he hadn't had a decent night's sleep since his tenth birthday, and a growling, grinding sound to his voice that practically begged him to sip mint tea for a week. But he wasn't frowning, so...

Improvements.

He settled down, and brought out his ink brush. His first offerings were elegant and clean, even for a child of his age, but then again calligraphy was a thing that he had to produce regularly as a priest... which made his second offerings of third century forms of the kanji roughly as unsurprising as the last. Neither he nor the sensei were shocked by this, and reacted with the same expectation that this needed to happen. What was more surprising, however, was that the lengthy scroll he wrote out in reproducing an older and extremely long series of travel poems of the unicorn was done cleanly and correctly. His wrist ached and he needed a rest when it was done, but the work was... acceptable.

Dao let out a deep sigh, his writing was bordering on in decipherable at the best of times and he held little hope of that changing today.

He concentrated very hard on how neat his writing was, and on relieving the cramps in his hand as he neared the end of the exercise. The ancient texts however, were beyond his capabilities and he made a total mess of the intricate characters earing a tut of disappointment from Murashige.

The literacy exam was not entirely unexpected considering how much the Sensei were pushing the idea of having a wide breath of skill and ability. This, however, was something she felt quite confident on. The Kakita artisans who had made up most of her teachers for the entirety of her schooling would be aghast if she could demonstrate a breath of knowledge and skill in the art of writing, even when it came to writing at length.

She did not disappoint.

Under normal circumstances, Bayushi Jiro could write very well. He had received no formal training, but, like his ability with the sword, it seemed to flow naturally from him. In fact, he felt rather confident about his chances of success...that is, until he saw the length of the scroll he was to copy.

Sweet Kami of Carpal Tunnel, do not smite me, in your mercy.

He set to his tack, and managed to execute it to the satisfaction of his sensei.

It's incredibly frustrating seeing his name near the top of the list, but never in the TOP of the list. He needs something, anything, to help differentiate him from the others. So what are we being tested on today? Calligraphy, something associated with courtiers and shugenjas mostly. Great, look like he's gotta ace this or he can kiss the title of "top of his class" goodbye.

Let's start with making a copy of these lengthy scrolls. What are they about, looks more like a list than a court document. Oh well, it gives him a chance to see what kind of writing style she wants. Then after he finshed that scroll, it was time to show his ability to use ancient styles. Good thing his sensei had a stint as a scribe. Haruki was able to see rather old copies of the Tao of Shinsei, so he simply copied some of those passages. Lastly, he needs to find a way to make his own style, one which would really stand out. So how about he finds a way to mix the two? Sadly, he's still just a kid and doesn't know how to make a striking new fashion trend.

Wyn settles into one of the scrolls, he seems a little nervous, his hand writing is not the subject he is most proud of. He works his way through both the basic artistic calligraphy and the more archaic older alphabet, which he is rather glad he studied just the other day. Then it comes to the longer more intense portion of writing lines after lines after lines. He summons his Will and Essence to push though and ends up forgetting to stop at the correct length, going over slighlty and making even more embellishments then needed.

The smell of ink and fine paper is immediately discernible once entering the room, but Kazuko takes a deep breath, actually enjoying the smell. It calms her down, surrounded by all the scrolls with calligraphy so gracefully written on it. She can't help but look around the room and be amazed, almost wanting to reach out and touch it to verify its existence. Inspired by the various works of art around her, she uses her brush and tries to give an expressive form on her first piece of paper. With an idea already in mind, a few well executed strokes is all it takes for her to finish with her first piece. She's absolutely ecstatic at the way it turned out, managing to perfectly capture the idea she had in mind. The senseis seem to be very pleased by it if their looks and hushed whispers are anything to go by. Doji-sensei seems to be paying particular close attention to her. Next, she had to demonstrate her proficiency by using ancient calligraphy. Luckily, she remembered how to carry out the bold brush strokes and not disappoint the Crane clan sensei watching her. As her final test of skill, she had to write a long scroll with many different characters on it. Genuinely enjoying herself, she becomes immersed in copying down the long scroll and doesn't even realize that her wrist growing sore until she gets done with it. A sore wrist is nothing compared to catching the attention of Doji sensei though. Upbeat, she takes one last lingering look at the scrolls on the walls before almost skipping out of the room.

Sakura had writing that could only be described as 'rushed'. She scribbled quickly, not finding this particular art form all that exciting to her.

Still, it was readable and she could keep writing over and over for hours. Even if she spent the whole time writing about why frogs were always smiling, and why a forge was a special place.

The Kuni boy had learned to do basic writing, but he had never really focused much on the aesthetics or propriety of actual calligraphy. Among his family it simply wasn't seen as a necessity for most. He was not going to maintain the libraries or send letters to important people after all, so it was not expected of him. But he was not convinced that it was pointless for himself. He wanted to be able to record his travels through the spirit realms in the future, and so he paid great attention to detail in the lesson.

He was certainly not the greatest at this particular discipline, but he was not about to let the lessons offered by a great calligrapher to go to waste. That dedication served hims well in the lesson. His effort paid off and impressed the sensei greatly. Despite not knowing what he was doing fully, he kept pace with the best of the students, even if he was far behind them in technical understanding.

Ichiro walked into this lesson not caring at all how he would do, if there was something he cared less about in this world than writing he wasn't sure what it was.

It likely shocked the sensei that his writing was actually rather good looking, not the caligraphy of an artisan, the letters were functionally formed not curved and flowing but they were all evenly proportioned and very clearly legible.

And they were further shocked when the Unicorn brute started using caligraphy that hadn't been in fashion in Rokugan for over a hundred years. Little did they know it wasn't so different from some script he had seen foreign merchants use.

But the bot grew quickly tired of writing characters and after only a few dozen he got up and left, the sensei equally disappointed as they were unsurprised.

Kenji went to literacy training with the other students. Luckily he was already familiar with it before he came here, and so the tests Doji-sensei performed were no major difficulty for him. He was a bit envious, but at the same time happy that Kazuko attracted the interest of Doji-sensei. Good for you, Kenji thought.
Much more he was surprised that the Moto section was so good, because the day before, he had labeled calligraphy as unimportant.

Zashi stretches and flexes their fingers, popping their knuckles and giving the digits a shake. They would need to be limber for this. Understanding aesthetics was kind of Zashi's thing, so the first part didn't seem so intimidating. All it took was what was normally written on the board, but with decisive brushstrokes, devoid of fear because...well, what really was the consequence for failure? Now, the next part was harder...not because Zashi didn't remember the older characters, but well, they all swam together when you had to use them long enough. It takes a loooooot of remembering to place the correct timeline to impress the sensei. The wrap up is a laborious slog, but Zashi manages to get through, passing in their scroll and then putting their head down for a nap.

  • Kitsune Setsuna perched at a desk, now dried off from earlier events and was prepared for writing. After all, most shugenja did calligraphy so he was set. The task was to write with aesthetically pleasing characters, in High Rokugani (the elder and more formal written language) and to write a lot. No sweat. Since there was not a guideline given on what to write, he would simply put to paper what came to mind.

"This is the story of 'The Ronin of the Little Village.' A tale I was taught while sailing on towards here, by an Ikoma Courtier of great skill and beauty, Ikoma Chiaki-san. As winter begun one year, a ronin woman called Hina entered the village. This wasn't unusual for the village, many passed through as they made there way along the coast. In fact the village had a young craftsman by the name of Atomu who himself was ronin and had helped the villages with his skills when ever possible."

"Given the nature of winter, the two ronin would spend much time in each others company, a large cause of tension in the village as Hina was a swordswoman who lived and ate by her katana while Atomu could barely hold his. The two fought all winter, trying to convince the other they must follow their way and nearly tearing the town in two with their argument."

"As spring came, Hina left the town in a boat and Atomu set about fixing the village. However a restlessness had settled in the man, each day he would go to the tip of land and pratice his Kenjutsu. This continued for many years until one day he saw a boat approaching. He knew this boat, a trading vessel that brought many resources to the village and so he headed to the village dock where the fishing boats were unloading and waited."

"As the trader arrived, he noticed another shocking individual on the deck as Hina had returned to the village. 'You were wise to learn art' she admitted as he admitted 'you were wise to learn the katana.' And together they agreed to share what they had learned and crafted a statue of a samurai with a sword in one hand and a brush in the other, placing on top of the boulder that now sits on the point before heading off on the next boat to share their wisdom."

He softly spoke as he wrote, visualizing each character and telling the story as he did. However, he was only able to complete the first saga of the adventures of Hina and Atomu, his brush furiously scribbling before it came to a sudden stop. Halfway through, he'd begun feeling a strange tension in his wrist but ignored it. Unfortunately, it didn't go away and suddenly it felt like something sharp was inside of him, piercing his tendons. The white haired boy jerked back from the desk in surprise, brush dropping to the floor as his fingers clenched and unclenched in pain. To his credit, he did not cry aloud or make noise to disturb the other students, but his incarnadine hues were watery and large as the pain shot through while he cradled it with his other hand. Thankfully, the time for class would not last much longer and when it came time to be dismissed to go clean, he was was probably the first one out the door.

He could pretend that it was perhaps the digging from the spellcasting training earlier, but truth be told he wasn't sure why it happened. Oh well.

Sasaiko breathes deeply, hoping to still herself after the earlier attempts to do so. It works to some extent; her first pass leaves writing a bit better than might be expected. She does stumble over the older works, however, which annoys her; she harnesses the energy to write and write and write and write, leaving a long string of characters behind her.

Damnably inconsistent performance she thinks as she bows and retires.

Prashant had had some lessons in calligraphy at his dojo. The reading part was interesting enough - access to more reading material on a variety of topics was never something to overlook. But his efforts on how to actually write each ideogram had always been a bit half-hearted. He'd have time to learn that later, he thought.

Well, now 'was' later, and he'd have to do his best to remember what he could from his training, even if he had slacked off on it a bit.

The first task was the hardest, but he strove as much as he could to do his best... and the results were actually good. Not good enough to impress anyone, but good enough to convince the Sensei that he could write in a pleasing manner.

After the confidence gained in that first task, he went through the others much more easily. His memory for rare, ancient ideograms, combinations and styles was actually very good, and he braced through the long scroll without much problem.

It wasn't a 'brilliant' exhibition, but it proved both to Doji-sensei and to himself that he had, in fact, learned to write properly and well.
