Daily Art and Courtier Training (Mandatory Event)

Post by Vutall » Tue Jun 09, 2020 8:25 pm

Daily Art and Courtier Training

After the morning duties are completed, a small number of sensei ask those whose schools specialize in either the arts or courts to remain inside the dojo to conduct their morning training. They go over a number of different topics each day, usually involving a story of a court they had attended and ask the students what they think could have been done differently, or what was done correctly. Additionally, one or two sensei ask students of the arts to observe and attempt to copy them in their art, and correcting mistakes as they spot them.
This is a repeatable event, and will happen over multiple days. Each day, you must select a Ring to use, at which point, you may not use that ring again for this event. Players should make a note in their Personal Forum with a topic called "Daily Art and Courtier Training " and note which days they used each ring.

Characters with Seven Fortunes Blessing may only use their blessing for one roll per event.

Characters who have the following disadvantages have the following penalties:
Antisocial: Instead of suffering the dice penalty, instead increase your TNs by 1 or 2 respectively.

Only characters with the Artisan, Courtier, or Shinobi school tags may enter this event

In order to complete the training, you must do the following:

Select a ring to use (not including Void), not using the same ring you have already selected before for this event. You will use either its physical or mental traits for this event. (Artisans choose either a physical or Mental trait, based on what the artisan skill typically uses. Courtiers use only Mental traits)

Then, make a Meditation/Void check at TN6. If you succeed, you gain that ring as a bonus to your rolls for this event
Then, you must complete the following steps in order, selecting either Arts or Court:

Arts

Pick a skill: Acting, Artisan (any), Perform (Any)

Then you must make three rolls using that skill with the TN starting at 4, then 5, then ending at 6.

Courts

First you must make a Courtier roll at TN 4

Then a Sincerity roll at TN 5

Finally an Etiquette roll at TN 6

Rewards:

Arts
  • -For every roll you succeed, you gain +2 Dojo Points
  • -if you succeed all three rolls, you gain +1 to the skill used. You may only gain this reward once per skill.
  • -If you ever roll a 15 or higher on any skill, you gain the Great Potential advantage for that skill
  • -If you have a roll explode twice on a Perform skill that relies on your voice (such as Singing or Oratory), you gain the Voice Advantage
  • -If you have a roll explode twice on an Artisan skill, you gain the Soul of Artistry advantage
  • -If you have a roll explode twice on a Perform skill, you gain the Sensation advantage
  • -At the end of the event, you gain a permanent +1 to the Mental and Physical Traits associated with the ring you selected. You may only gain this reward once per Trait.
Special: On the final iteration of this event, If you pass at all of your Art rolls in at least 3 of the 4 events, you gain the Touch of the Spirit Realms: Yomi Advantage. You MUST pick a school skill that matches one of the passed skills used during the 4 events

Court
  • -For every roll you succeed, you gain +2 Dojo Points
  • -If you succeed all three rolls, you gain +1 to your choice of either Coutier, Sincerity, or Etiquette. You may only gain this reward once per skill
  • -If you ever roll a 15 or higher on any skill, you gain the Great Potential advantage for that skill
  • -if you have a roll explode twice on your Courtier roll, you gain the Benten's Blessing advantage
  • -If you have a roll explode twice on a Sincerity (Honesty) roll, you gain the Balance advantage
  • -If you have a roll explode twice on an Etiquette roll, you gain the Clear Thinker advantage
  • -At the end of the event, you gain a permanent +1 to the Mental and Physical Traits associated with the ring you selected. You may only gain this reward once per Trait.
Special: On the final iteration of this event, If you pass at all of your Court rolls in at least 3 of the 4 events, you gain the Touch of the Spirit Realms: Meido Advantage

Bayushi Jiro's rather cerebral approach to court stood him in good stead on this first day of training. His mask, having been tested by snoring Doji and strutting Mantis the day before, proved impenetrable, and his words were persuasive. Oddly for a Scorpion, however, his words carried just enough of the ring of truth to be passable. Perhaps when he turned to more traditional methods of expression in future days, he would show a little more of the Bayushi Family's specialty. If Jiro was disappointed in the meantime, well, who could tell through the blank wall of his on?

Jiro shall be making these rolls using the Fire ring
Meditation/Void: 2 Fail.

Miya Wyn enters the training room, and meditates to find center before dealing with the barrage of questions coming that test his knowledge of the rules of court. Though he does not show himself as exceptional in any particular area he does well to get through the basics without a single slip up.

Well, since there was physical activity later in the day, Asako Sanzo decides to focus on training his courtly skills. While it may not be his primary duty, a yojimbo should be familiar with the workings of court; the bushi of his clan were quite often assigned to shugenja who were typically less familiar with such things. Sanzo takes a deep breath, taking a moment to center himself. Paradoxically, he finds his speech to be unusually convincing, but blanked when it came to his practiced Etiquette.

Sakura, who felt very calm about the whole test. This was her talent, she was going to be the greatest smith in this generation! However, what to make...what to make...

It had to be something she could make in this short period of time...

She got her tools together, working slowly and carefully, taking nearly the whole allocated time, but eventually she finished with a wonderful looking mini-katana made of steel. It would be perfect for a doll or action figure. The attention to detail though was incredible, from the handle to the blade, everything immaculate.

Unsurprisingly, the senseis were extremely impressed.

Some people were going to stretch themselves with training. However, Zashi could feel the eyes of Shosuro Tomoe, and after what she had phrased a "bold request" it was time to show off a bit to impress her. If Zashi wanted her to be a mentor for the kind of skills that had been hinted at, now was not the time. If the attempt was a failure, hey, there was always shugenja training. However, the fates seem to see Zashi's lack of effort, and what should be a simple meditation just does not come.

Stage fright maybe? Odd, that's never happened before.

But if not being centered harms a deepening of awareness, it seems to be an absolute boon for Zashi's acting. The moment Zashi appears on stage, Zashi is a different person, reflecting changes in tiny details: a tremor of the hand of an aged monk, the proud stiff walk of a Lion, the casual indifference to opinion of a Crab. Every time Zashi seems to walk out of view, that character dies, ceases to be, only to be replaced with a new one where Zashi now stands.

This kind of stuff. Ok, Shiso could improvise, for all the nagging pain from the last day's misfortune. But if someone expected him to wing it well by sitting put, they would be grossly mistaken. They felt propelled to action!

Dragon 2. Void/ Meditation, TN6.: 1d10 3

Shiso decided to act as trapped animals. First as a chicken, then as a panda, and finally as a tiger. Shiso's last performance was very convincing given their feline proclivities, walking back and forth with a killer gaze on the sensei, but they absolutely nailed it with a docile, rolling panda that included a interesting longing monologue about seasonal tastes of bamboo. Shiso also discovered that a bit of back pain was a motivator for tapping into deeper existential matters of the lesser creatures. Go figure.

Nobuko was confident in her skills and decided that since they were supposed to show their skills, she would start with Origami. It was a 'quiet' art that took time and concentration. One she could do while others performed for the whole of the class or spoke to the teachers and answered questions of court or etiquette. When she was done with several pieces and felt confident in them, she then presented her own art for inspection. She was less pleased with her first attempt, though it was passable. The other two, however, she felt very proud of.
