Matsu Qiang stepped onto the sands, wearing a practice gi and carrying a wooden sword. After bowing to the judges and his opponent, the Lion began to demonstrate a complex sword kata involving elaborate footwork and sharp, powerful strikes against multiple (imaginary) enemies. At the end of the sequence, Qiang lowered his sword and bowed once more, before stepping back to his corner of the ring.

As the Bayushi began her attack, Matsu Qiang spotted an opening. Sidestepping the Scorpion’s cut, the Lion delivered a powerful strike to the point of her shoulder. The wooden sword left Mei Lin a stinging reminder of the outcome of their first exchange.

Avoiding the Scorpion’s attack, Matsu Qiang’s wooden sword gracefully slid past her defenses to just barely contact the hollow of Mei Lin’s throat. For the first time, the Lion pulled his strike considerably. It was clear that a full-force hit to this location would’ve been incapacitating.

She then turns and begins to walk away.

“Thank you for the advice, Bayushi-san,” Qiang said dryly. He lowered his sword and gave the Scorpion a precise bow, before returning to his corner to meditate on the match.
