Follow up question on jiu 5 specifically - do the Sumai rolls count as "starting a grapple", and thus grant a Free Raise?

(I'm assuming the Mastery ability usually counts only for the initial roll to start the grapple, not for controlling it, yeah? But since we're like grappling and letting go in Sumai it would apply for all rolls then?)

For the horsemanship event, can we choose to fail the 'racing' horsemanship rolls to ride at an easier pace and not risk falling off the horse?

I know what I'm good at and what I'm not, no need to risk going fast when a nice easy pace will get me to the end.

No, you’ll have to roll regardless. You only fall of though if you roll a 10 or less.

No, I don't want to get into speeds, because then people with different water rings get different speeds as well and it makes the event more complex than I would like it to be.
