You can use them, and it wouldn't be considered cheating as no one could tell, but think about if you would actually be wearing them during the tests...I'm not going to say no to a special item, since that defeats the purpose of having said item, but I would lean heavily on saying lore wise, you probably wouldn't be wearing them..

I think a lot of this comes down to

"Yes the GM is going to let you do it"

So at what honor level does doing so cost an honor hit? Not because it's not allowed but because its unfair sportsmanship?

People should be taking into consideration the lore for the setting as well. As an example, for Shugenja, they really shouldn't be throwing spells around all day long. Remember, they speak to actual living gods. They respect them to the utmost degree, and to call upon their power is not only a prayer, but it is a request. The kami can, and many times do, say no. Invoking a kami is a very sacred thing and doesn't happen regularly at all. Dire needs, usually.

I understand that players have shiny buttons they want to press, so if you want to press them, go right ahead. Just know that there are lore reasons a lot of times those buttons shouldn't be pressed, and there will be consequences (Good or bad) for actions if they stray too far away from what the lore entails.

Also, none of my games are about winning. If you get the cool reward (since there needs to be some sort of metagame) awesome! but that's not quite the point. My intention is story first and foremost.

Speaking of shiny buttons (not that I'll necessary press them! ) - would "The Mountain's Feet" or "Hands of Clay" (both Earth ML2) interact with either the Sumai or Athletics events?

I'd also ask about 'Whispers of the Land' and the Hunting event, but from my understanding that's a Kitsune secret spell (was in old lore at least), so no reason a Uni would be taking it outta the blue

Mountain's feet no, because nothing is knocking you down.

Hands of Clay would allow you to bypass the wall in the athletics event, but that means you do not get any points for that portion since you didn't roll.

Whispers of the Land would not work for the hunting event because it says tracks of any person, not animal

Ok! I was hoping maybe the "push your friend off the bridge" bit would count as being 'knocked down' (but I guess it's not the same thing!), or maybe Hands of Clay would help you actually stay on the bridge... well, I guess not

As for Whispers of the Land - I never even noticed it said 'person'! Good point!

Does Search emphasis apply to this? What about rerolls for investigation 3 mastery ability?

Oh, since Dao mentioned that - As a Shugenja/ Artisan, could I choose either version of the event or do I have to go for the Shugenja version?

(Not sure I'd actually benefit from going the non-shug way, but just to know whether I should even consider that)

Shugenja and Monk tags override dual tags for that event. Crane are crane after all, trying to enforce their vision of what is proper.

You could, and it would could as the first round for the Kiho, requiring a VP since it it would be a free action instead of a complex.

As each roll is treated like a round, if you do the spell *and* a kiho (spending the vp for the kiho) can you spend void on the roll in the event, or does that fall into the 1 vp per round rule

If you spend a VP to activate a Kiho, you can't spend a VP on your first roll for the event.

The mastery 3 ability does not, just the normal invetigation second attempt with the increased TN tkes an hour. The mastery acts like Lucky
