Any details as to why they were promoted to full family status?

So does the sailing speed assume mostly still waters like in the ocean? And if so, what would be the speed for using a boat upstream?

It's an average between having a headwind, tailwind, or no wind. All the speeds are set as if you had different things that would both help you (like roads or fast current) or hinder you (Like poor terrain or still water) So you can just use the numbers listed for all unless I specify otherwise for some reason.

If we do something that warrants a bonus in a training event (for example dealing 15 damage on an unarmed strike on the first attack), would we get the benefit during the event or after?

All event rewards are gained at the end of the day, so you won't have them on your sheet until the next game day. Example: On day 2 you earn Hands of Stone, you wouldn't have it available until Day 3.

if i want to get a skill during event by calling a raise, i would need to use void to get it to rank 1 (temporary) to actually use a raise, am i correct?

Correct, you would need to use Void to gain +1k0 (and act as having the skill)

HOWEVER

If you manage to beat the base TN by 10 on your roll, you get the Exceptional Roll Rule benefit of a free raise even if you don't have the skill. Normally, you can only use free raises if you have the skill, but for events in Part 1, that is waived and you get the free raise even if you do not have the skill.

With raises being +2 instead of +5 for part 1, is exceptional roll still +10 not +4?

For Kakita Swordsman it says swords you create are considered art. Does that mean just Katana/Wakizashi? What are non-swords considered (other than the obvious ninja weapons=bad)?

Can you use weaponsmithing to make Shuriken and Tsubute?

Any sword, so if you made a european longsword or a scimitar, still art for school purposes.

non-swords are "art" in the general sense, since everything a samurai makes is art, but it doesn't key off your school tech.

So if you choose Weaponsmith as your school technique choice at IR1/IR3, and use it to make a non-sword, it doesn't gain the bonuses/count for techs?

Correct. The academy specifically focuses on swords. I just didn't think a specific "swordsmith" skill made sense over general weaponsmith. if that feels too clunky or unfair, we can re-visit it.

It feels a lil odd that only one specific part of a skill counts when there are plenty of non-low weapons (tanto are used for many things for example). It might be better as an emphasis given freely to the school and then you can say weaponsmith (swords) so there's an upside and a downside
