Here chirpy, chirpy

Nesrin returned to the barracks after her morning chores and went to feed a scrap of breakfast to her pet cricket, Banling. To her horror, the door of the tiny cage was open, with no sign of the wee bug in evidence.

She started searching the 'room' looking under futons and along the edges of shoji screens, soon expanding her search beyond the Unicorn space.

Ginkarasu is just finishing securing his mochi supply when he sees the Unicorn checking corners and crannies.

"Uhm, Utaku-san? What're you looking for? Is is a holiday hunt? I didn't know the Utaku did that!"

Miya Wyn was running a little late, having just gotten up himself, and taking time to sweep the barracks as part of his morning chores, he pauses seeing the Crab and Unicorn looking around.

She looks up, sets down someone's bedroll, and offers a quick bow. "Utaku Nesrin, ah... Yasuki-san." Her eyes continue to scan the corners and edges of screens as she talks. "Actually, I'm looking for Banling, my cricket. The cage got open somehow and now he's lost."

Her eyes pause in their search for a moment to focus on Ginkarasu. "I...don't know what a holiday hunt is, and didn't know this was a holiday either."

As she looks toward another corner, she spots the newcomer as well. "Uh...hi there.... Is this your stuff? Sorry, I'm looking for a pet, really."

He smiles and shakes his head, and leans on his broom, "I was just cleaning up, I haven't seen any pets, though maybe last night...there was someone wandering around peeping on people, maybe that was your cat or?"

"no. Banling's a cricket. He's mostly really dark brown with white spots on his jumping legs." Her fingers sketch out cricket parts in the air...which mostly just looks like random twiddling because she really can't draw on paper either.

"But there were eyes peeping? I didn't know about that at all! What happened?"

"Huh, I slept right through it all. Odd that your cage was open! Let's give a look?" He thumbs his chest, "I'm Yasuki Ginkarasu! If Banling's got white spots like me, then maybe he'll come out for a comrade."

Ginkarasu gets down low to give a search, figuring the cricket's not likely to be up high.

"Good point," She wasn't going to say it, but she'd noticed the spots during trainings yesterday and thought them a terribly unlucky sign. Maybe she'd misjudged the omen of them.

"He'd be easier to find if he'd start singing, but that's more likely at night, and then I'm barging around people trying to sleep."

"Maybe we should close the windows and cover up the cracks letting light in?" He looks around, trying to figure how hard that could be.

"Yes throw blankets up over windows, and put out all the lights and be really quiet!" He begins pulling peoples blankets and using them to cover in outside lights.

Nesrin blinks, and then laughs. "That's a great idea!" She dives into the task with all the energy of a born morning person. Her blanket it strung up first, corners wedged into gaps in the wooden walls over their area's window. Next is one worried out of the roll she thinks belongs to Moto Iuchi, flung over a shoji screen to dim the light from that side of the room.

And it's all done as q u i e t l y as possible. Stealth is certainly not her strong suit, but it makes for a comical sight as she pads as gently as possible across the floor, blanket held up before her.

When the space around is dimmed, she crouches low and quiet, eyes wide as if that will open her ears wider as well, to hear any little chirp or scuttle.

Ginkarasu goes to his blanket and comes back trying to hold it up high enough to block light from elsewhere in the building.

It doesn't take too long after the blankets are up and the lights are out for the familiar chirping to begin.

Dropping lightly to hands and knees, Nesrin tries to pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

Slightly muffled by the blanket is a "Oooo!" before Ginkarasu remembers to be quiet and tries to stay still.

((Hunting / Perception, TN 6 will let you find it, or you can just roleplay it. either way you all have done enough to justify a skill increase by XP))

"I think...I think its coming from under that bunk?"

Even with Wyn pointing it out, she couldn't seem to pinpoint the source. Still, she crept quietly toward the bunk pointed out, eyes sharp as she could manage.

Maybe not silently enough, because the chirping ceased. Then...movement...

Three almost leisurely hops from beneath the bunk on the other side. *hop* *hop* *hop*

From behind his blanket, a whisper: "Do you see it?"

"No. Don't hear him either now."
