Mai gives a good demonstration. Unfortunately, it was almost too good. She messes up he first attack trying to showboat and takes the hit. The second attack she gets serious. She doesn't mind Hitoshi winning. But she at least wants to score a hit.

Mai takes the first two hits and comes back with a third connecting when Hitoshi tries to add too much of a flourish. Mai of course, pulls her punch. She strikes a final time, albeit, not the greatest swing.

Mai grunts as she takes the hit. A flash of anger passes by Mai's face before she bows, acknowledging Hitoshi's victory. She leaves area to ask the kami to heal herself. And they do. She does not make any offer to Hitoshi. She pulled her strike. He upset that a shugenja got a hit in? Child.
Maybe there is no conspiracy to stop his gempukku. Maybe he's just an asshole.

Toshimoko nods at Mai. However, Akodo Eiko announces that Hitoshi has an official warning, and any further infraction will be removal from the tournament. Additional, he will suffer a -40 Topaz Point penalty. and receive no points for this test.
Hitoshi and Toshimoko both look at the Akodo and stare, before Hitoshi storms off..

They weren't the only one staring and Eiko. Mai's anger dissolved. Sure, she was pissed that he didn't hold back, but that was a bit of an overreaction. She actually pitied Hitoshi at this point.
Though it does suggest that it's less Crane conspiracy and more Hitoshi being an asshole since she doubted Eiko was part of some conspiracy. But still she felt a bit bad about it all. She bowed to whoever she needed to and got out of there. While she suspected it was simply Lion rage of Hitoshi not holding back against a friend, it did put her in an awkward position. Best to get out and be quiet for the rest of the day.
Of course, the thoughts would be going through her mind to result in a less than stellar performance during the culture test.
