Matsu Qiang arrived first to the starting line, and began a sequence of careful stretches, limbering up for the race while he waited for his opponent.

Dao eyed his opponent warily, but with a small amount of confidence. After all, if he was treated as roughly as Kakita-san yesterday, then Qiang would be expelled.

He was pretty sure his opponent wouldn't risk that.

The Lion tattoo on his upper left arm almost seemed to growl at its namesake Clan's representative as it filled Dao with vigor for the upcoming challenge.

Matsu Qiang raised an eyebrow at Dao’s wariness, but the Lion said nothing, instead giving the Dragon a polite bow.

When the judge called “Go! Go!” the young Lion took off running, like an arrow loosed from a bow. Despite the winding forest path, Qiang’s steps were surefooted and swift as the two runners raced toward the bridge.

Dao was quicker off the mark, but his opponent soon outpaced him and the Dragon found himself choking on Qiang's dust as the Lion made it to the log bridge first.

When he finally reached the bridge, Dao danced delicately across it with no difficulty at all.

First to arrive at the bridge, Qiang hurried quickly across the narrow log in an attempt to keep the lead. For a moment an incautious step threatened to dump him into the mud, but the sheer momentum of the Lion’s charge carried him forward and past the obstacle.

Qiang resisted the temptation to look behind him. This was no time for hesitation or doubt. Best to assume the Dragon was right behind him. He had to keep running!

Qiang won starting sprint with exceptional success for 3 Topaz Points.

Dao's speed was pretty consistent, the log bridge hadn't thrown off his rhythm as he continued to power around the course.

Unfortunately, Qiang’s initial rush had winded him, and after navigating the bridge, the Lion’s pace slowed considerably. Dao’s steady run soon allowed him to overtake the Lion, who was gasping for breath as they approached the next obstacle.

Dao was a little more cautious as he approached the next obstacle. He had brought very little clothing with him, and didn't want to have to clean the mud out.

He needn't have worried though as he swung over almost effortlessly.

As Togashi Dao began to pull ahead of him, Matsu Qiang felt the need for decisive action. The Lion leaped fearlessly for the rope, swinging over the mud pit as quickly as he could. Landing on the other side, Qiang used his forward momentum to tumble into a carefully controlled forward roll that brought him back into a running stance.

After Matsu Qiang surged back into the lead, he drew upon inner reserves to push himself still further. With heart racing and feet flying along the winding forest trail, the Lion steadily increased his lead as they approached the final obstacle.

Dao is panting as he reaches the final obstacle. It takes all his efforts to climb up and over the wall, but he manages it on his first attempt before heading for the final dash to the finish line.

Matsu Qiang threw himself at the wooden wall and began to climb it, but as he neared the top, one of the wooden boards he used as a hand grip snapped under his weight with a sharp crack! The Lion tumbled from the wall, but managed to roll with the fall and leaped up, undamaged. Undaunted, Qiang made a second attempt at the wall and swarmed over the top successfully. Fortunately, the young Lion was able to make up the lost time from the last obstacle on the final, straight path that led to the finish line.

Panting and exhausted, Dao offered a bow of thanks to the judge and of congratulations to Qiang before moving of to the side to watch the other matches and recover.

"It was...well fought...Matsu-san. I look forward...to seeing how well...you do going forwards."

Dao replies with sincerity. For he knew he himself was no slouch, so to be beaten marked his opponent as one worth watching.
