Ichiro offers a respectful bow to Kai. He considers whether today is the day to test the Kaito's ability to overcome surprise adversity but, in the end, decides that honor is more important.

Mind clear, intentions pure, the Unicorn sets off like an arrow.

(Approach: Water

Initiative: 25 (Forgot to add the -5 for hangover)
Sprint 1, VP for +1k1 = 34
Choosing not to cheat)

Given the upcoming exertion and the potential for mud, Kai swapped her white and red miko outfit for a set of well-worn robes, albeit still in Phoenix colors, to mix both practicality and to represent her clan.

She took a moment to center her thoughts and inner strength for the coming trial and bowed to her opponent.

Kai was fast off the starting block, but she was clearly getting beat out in the footrace. Rather than pushing herself, the Kaito kept a quick - though measured - pace.

When she got to the bridge, Kai didn't even break stride in crossing over it.

Though Ichiro wanted to win he also knew a long day was ahead of them. As such he conserved his inner reserves of strength for the final obstacle. A wise choice as, while he scaled it without pause, it was easy to see where arrogance could have laid him flat on his back. He wanted to win but there was no dishonor in defeat as long as he did not embarrass himself. No matter how his speed would, in the end, compare to hers he was satisfied with his own results.

As the judges tally final totals and speeds he offers another bow to Kai before letting his mind empty to once more touch the Void.

Kai kept up her measured pace, jogging along even as Ichiro pulled ahead further and further.

She navigated the second obstacle with aplomb and almost made it up to the top of the climbing obstacle when her grip slipped, dumping her unceremoniously at the bottom.

As expected.

Rising and dusting herself off, the Phoenix girl merely crouched down and leapt clear over the obstruction with plenty of room to spare, sleeves and hair trailing along behind her as she picked up her run on the far end as if nothing happened.

At the end, Kai, somewhat flushed from exertion but otherwise not even really having worked up a sweat, bowed to the clear winner.

"I wish you well, Utaku-san, as you race the one you truly race against."

A strange girl.
