Well, Eichiro knew as a mere courtier that he wouldn't win this competition. He was, perhaps, unprepared to be so thoroughly outclassed from the get-go. No matter, finishing with the training that he had was the important part.
That is, until he hit the rope swing. He tried to take it at a run, but the same wind that had helped him before took the rope out of reach and
*plop* in he went into the mud, face first.
The wind kami are, of course, tricksters by nature.
He would have sighed deeply as he lay in that mud, except as a samurai, breathing earth and water is not good for living. It just wasn't done. So he stood up, wiped the mud from his eyes and made a show of gazing about to get his bearings. "Ah, yes." he said aloud, before scrambling up the near side of the pit and taking the swinging rope across with what appeared to be practised ease.
His opponent was now topping the wall that seemed so very far away, and the mud made an unpleasant squish in his sandals as he ran. As he reached the wall, he jumped a little to get a head start and made it half way before the mud on his hands and feet got the better of him. Eichiro slid, unceremoniously, back down to the bottom of the wall leaving a nice brown stain of mud.
Again he made a show of looking at the wall, moving to the side of the wall and looking at the angle, then he attacked it again, making his way up and over. Then it was a nice, easy jog to the finish.
It was a good thing that he had worn his brown pants today...
