The horse seemed a bit uncertain as the Lion approached it, but allowed Matsu Qiang to mount it. Once mounted, the young Lion spurred the horse hard, in an effort to keep up with the Phoenix. Qiang pulled on the reins with brute strength to guide his steed toward the flag, flapping in the wind. The fluttering flag nearly evaded him, but at the last moment, Qiang snatched the flag. The Lion waved the flag in the air triumphantly as he rode toward the next goal.

But at this point, the poor pony decided it had had enough. Balking at Qiang’s brutish treatment, the horse completely refused to approach the lance target, no matter how much the young Lion kicked its sides or shouted at it.

The only command the horse would obey was to return to the starting line, which it did with alacrity. There, the disgusted Lion dismounted and handed the abused pony back to the stable master, who was too polite to show his disapproval.
