(Day 2, LA) Mandatory Event: Heraldry

[Kakita Kenji]

Kenji was still frustrated by the Sumai match, and not exactly concentrated when he entered the test.

The first two mon were an easy one, the biggest because he knew them very well: "Crab clan, Kaiu family, gifted builders and craftsmen. Famous for several castles and other fascinating defensive constructions, their swords are said to be unbreakable.

The Third Mon turned out to be more difficult for Kenji, he just couldn't figure it out, was it the hawks or the sparrow clan? he didn't know and unfortunately guessed wrong.

Maybe the fourth Mon was a bit cheating because it was the Mon of the Kaito family, after all Kenji had had enough to do with Haruki and Kai to recognize it.

The last Mon was a mystery to him, he didn't even try to guess who it belonged to but bowed to Doji-Sensei and left the test.

[Isawa Tanshin]

Tanshin was relatively fresh from the Sumai event. He was honestly shocked that he had done so well, and would likely have succeeded without the reinforcement of the Kami. He prepared himself for the next event by calling upon The Fire Kami's Blessing, offering a small prayer scroll.

Tanshin passed, but he felt a pang of shame. He was sure his Isawa masters would be proud of the use of spells to succeed, and even over-achieve, yet he had a sense that this was not appropriate for comparing one student to another.
He would seek out the temple later to ask forgiveness of the kami.

[Moto Ichiro]

This sort of thing was not his forte but Ichiro wasn't as dumb as people thought he was most of the time. Great clan mons was a breeze and the mon of the family mon was easy to recognize.

He struggled slightly with the mon of the minor clans as his sensei hadnt delved that far into things and then he knew little of vassal families and hadn't the foggiest idea whose personal mon that was.

[Utaku Nesrin]

One of the thoughts Nesrin had headed into the past year with was the possibility of being assigned as a yojimbo as her career progressed. She'd lose some of the camaraderie found within the Battle Maiden cavalry units, but she'd have more of a chance to travel. Guarding someone in the courts meant having a lot more awareness of who any given person was and what they could do, if they wanted. So she'd paid attention when Heraldry was taught and done a bit of studying on her own. And so, while she may not have remembered each mon, she could, in most cases, puzzle out who they ought to belong to.

She was able to provide some extra details into the symbolism of the Crab clan and the Yogo family. The Shika wasn't too difficult, though she'd yet to meet one, so she wasn't entirely sure she was correct until they nodded and went on to the next one.

It was pure luck that they walked next to the mon of the Hyuga vassals, honestly. She wasn't sure she'd know many of the other vassal families in the Empire.

She was actually rather excited when she recognized the next mon as that of Shiba Ono, Master of the Imperial Menagerie sometime last century. He'd featured prominently in a series of pillow book mysteries set in the historic capital and solved by the aforementioned Master of the Menagerie. Thanks to the books, she'd actually done some research to see that he'd actually existed and the symbolic details of his mon were true. The author had done her research for sure. Nesrin wondered if whoever compiled these mons for the exam was also a fan of Miya Mokusei, which was almost certainly a pen name.

After filling in perhaps a little too much detail about the mon, Nesrin bowed to the small Doji with some appreciation.

[Kaito Kai]

Where her admittedly limited knowledge of heraldry failed, intuition and serendipity stepped in to not only give Kai the correct answers, but also helped her to embellish her responses.

But it turns out intuition and serendipity have their limits.

"I don't know this one." Kai simply said of the personal mon after a moment's examination.

[Togashi Dao]

Dao sat across from Murashige and smiled politely. He had not been one who had particularly impressed the Doji sensei back at HIrosaka, but he hoped that the extra time he had spent studying since then would afford him the opportunity to do so now.

First he was presented with the mon of the Scorpion, and that was a gimmie, he wasn't sure how anyone could fail this first one.

He thought the same of the second, I mean, seriously, each Clan has what 4 or 5 families? It's a bird, but aren't all the Crane mons holding something? Dao was sure it was revenge for his approach to the Sumai event that saw him given the retired Crane Yasuki mon, which he failed to identify.

The mon of the Hare Clan proved no great difficulty for Dao, though the questions were obviously getting harder.

The vassal mon was luckily the mon of the Zurui family, that belonged to the Mirumoto famiy. Dao had seen that worn on occasion by visitors to the High House of Light.

The final mon was, to Dao's mind, incredibly difficult, but he took a deep breath gave his mind time to empty itself and opened himself up to his instinctual response, he didn't think, he just answered...and somehow, he was right.

Listening to the Crane judge's advice, Hazrat took a deep breath, held it for several heartbeats, then released it. He wasn't sure if detailed analysis would help him, but perhaps there were some clues he could unravel from what he knew.

When his name was called, Hazrat walked over and sat down, reciting a prayer as he did so. "Zhuanlun, Lord of Changes, smile upon me and grant me Good Fortune." He noticed a few odd looks from those around him. It did not seem to be a common thing to call upon the spirits for such a contest, but he knew he needed every bit of luck he could get.
