(Day 5, LM) Mandatory Event: Law
Re: (Day 5, LM) Mandatory Event: Law
"Proper preparation, eh?" Zashi rubs his chin. "I guess that listening to those classes may actually come in handy, as excruciating as they were to listen to."
The memory of a certain, literal (lowercase) fox sitting in on their lessons might fill some of the Crane in attendance in with laughter, right before they not realized that was how he might be beating them.
Zashi manages to conjure up a slightly obscure bit of Theology, the lesson actually one of the ones that stuck in Hirosaka. For the law, he gets a bit more obscure, mostly by picking out his favorite loopholes. He gets a small nod of approval from the sensei. He tries to center himself, but is a bit too flush with success.

Dao was confident as he sat down to answer the questions. His no thought approach might not have been what the judges were looking for, but he thought it his best approach, to just let the hours of research he had done at the High House come to him on instinct rather than actually thinking about the answers.
And it worked. At least for the first two questions. The third one dredged up some piece of heretical writing by the Perfect Land Sect he had perused and earned him only a scowl of disdain from the judge.

Unlike in the previous days, Prashant wakes up a bit later after staying up and talking to Wyn about the events of the previous evening. He was not sleepy, per se, but his mind was a bit less focused than it had been the days before. Still... Theology was one of the topics of today's test, and he was looking forward for it.
As he was called, the first question dealt with the main topic of the event - one on which he was much less well-versed. The question itself was quite... Uncomfortable.
'A samurai taunts another while displaying untoward behaviour in a public place. His insults are answered with violence; as part of his answer, the insulting samurai mains a third one who had not been involved before, and badly damages the location where the fight occurred. None of the three samurai are members of the clan where the incident occurred. Which of them have committed a crime, if any? Who is responsible for the damages?"
He thinks for a moment, remembering similar parts in his recent conversation with the Miya, and thus answers with certainty - even if the similarities to the previous evening are unsettling
The next question deals with how Fortunism and Shinseism see matters of crime, punishment and atonement. His rather deep knowledge of Rokugani religion and the teachings of Shinsei leads him to a very satisfactory answer, even if it lacks some of the inspiration that the Iuchi had shown the previous year when speaking about the Little Teacher.
The last question was once more related to religion - this time inquiring about the extent of criminal behaviour that would be associated with a variety of sayings, thoughts, philosophies and beliefs that bordered on the heretical.
The Iuchi were known for their open-mindedness and curiosity about various topics.... And it wasn't the first time he had heard things related to the Perfect Land Sect. In fact, while he thought he understood some aspects of why it had been considered heretical, he found the different view worthy of attention... But of course, he knew what was expected of traditional Rokugani religion. His answer was considered highly complete and appropriate, even if perhaps not entirely impressive considering what he has shown in Hirosaka, but it was more than enough.

Re: (Day 5, LM) Mandatory Event: Law
“A shugenja calls air kami to allow a Badger clan samurai to fly over a Dragonfly clan castle,” the instructor began. “While overflying the castle, the Badger samurai sees a Dragonfly hatamoto give orders to a retainer to assassinate an Imperial herald. The Badger is flying too far away to hear the orders, but is able to read lips to understand what is said. However, the retainer is killed by a stray arrow on the way to meet the Imperial herald, and the assassination attempt is never carried out.”
The instructor’s eyes were steely as he looked at the young Lion student being tested. “Has a crime been committed, Matsu-san, or not?” he asked. “And if a crime has been committed, is the testimony of the Badger samurai admissible?”
Qiang’s head spun has he struggled to memorize the complicated problem and its implications. He thought he knew the answer if the retainer had committed kanshi rather than perform the assassination, but was the answer the same if the retainer died in an accident instead? Did the magic spell allowing the Badger to be a witness prevent the testimony from being valid? Could the Badger still testify he “heard” the order if he was too far away to hear?
With careful analysis, Matsu Qiang worked out the answer. It might not have been the method the judges were looking for, but it was hard to fault his reasoning.
