The Martial Mind

With advice from his clan-mate, Asako Suboro, Isawa Tanshin had made considerable progress in the dojo. Taking chances brought greater rewards, and learning to step outside the comfortable moreso. All he had to do was go to the Lion's Den, so to speak.

He approached the domicile of Akodo Eiko, the Lion Gunso, and one of the bushi-sensei with trepidation, and knocked firmly at the door frame.
At least his knock wasn't timid.

"Akodo-sama!" He projected with a low bow. " I am in need of your teachings. It is said - “Sending an army without a scout is like leaping from a mountain without looking below" Similarly, I am confronted by subjects that my Isawa sensei did not have the opportunity to each me. Please instrcut me from your wisdom and experience, so that I may bring honor to you and our Ruby Champion."

It was odd to hear a Phoenix quote Akodo's Leadership, and odder still to hear it come from one who seemed destine for more spiritual pursuits.

"I think it would be unfair to provide you with instruction that your classmates did not have access to." Eiko-sensei rubbed his chin.
"Akodo said - “It is not difficult to find good advice, though it may be difficult to listen to it." Let us see how well you listen, young Phoenix.

He bade Tanshin enter, and over tea, he regaled him with stories of some of his past campaigns against armies led by Shiba commanders.
It seems this was meant to be a lesson in humility as well.
