Uncle Saibankan, Teach Me! (Expecting/Open)

"Mmm, excused. We actually use them to focus the senses in the right idea. A focus or mental guide of sorts. The burning of the intellect, seeing the reflection of the world in water... that sort of thing." Well, he used mnemonic devices like that. A frown and he pursed his lips, looking... displeased in a way, though not in a directed sort of way.

"I am sorry. I am not used to thinking of myself as successful, Toritaka-san. I am deeply unaccustomed to it. I keep expecting the numbers to shift."

"They may, it is possible. But for now, you stand above us all. I would be more a fool not to learn from you what I can, even were you not so good to talk to as you are."

[Asako Saburo]

Another blink. She didn't find him unpleasant to chat with? Well, he supposed she'd come and done so a few times hadn't she? He grunted and sighed t himself, settling back and only then realizing that they were a little close. Huh. Whatever. "Well, Toritaka-san, if you wished to pick at my brain, what would you ask of me."

She seems a bit lost in looking unfocusedly at him for a moment before shaking herself and replying to the question.

"A thought occurs. What would shift if the stories were not true? It is a perilous thought, of course, but, as you said, we are still children, and children can be forgiven such thoughts."

[Asako Saburo]

He considered for a moment, closing his eyes. "It would depend on if the legal decisions themselves required the stories to be true, which I do not believe that they did. They are suggestions of reasons, but as unorthodox as they might be?" A quick shake of his head. "The decisions themselves are of a magistrate of great authority, backed by the Emerald Champion at the time, and thus by Hantei Genji himself. It... does not any longer really depend on if this man ever lived, does it?"

[Toritaka Sasaiko]

"Perhaps.

"Perhaps it is as the Little Teacher said of stories of heroes. If they remind us that we can be great, do they not suffice?"

[Asako Saburo]

Hmmm. "Yes. Yes, I think that I like such a perspective. The little teacher did not give scholarly presentions of law, but given that we base so much of our society upon his perspective? It would make sense to treat law the same way at times. That may have been what Saibankan was doing. But... for the sake of no confusion we speak of his beloved uncle."

[Toritaka Sasaiko]

Sasaiko smiles.

"And we both arrive at better understanding."

She bows.

"I am happy to have helped, and grateful to have had your help."

[Asako Saburo]

He returned the bow and smiled some, settling back. "Yes... I am glad to have had you for this exercise. I think... that has helped my insight into the purpose of the document a great deal. Treating it this way will get more than I would have otherwise." He could only feel brief annoyance that he had only so much time to devote to the exercises and studies of the book.

He's not got a bad smile she thinks just before she says "We'll have to do it again sometime, then."

"An excellent plan," he nodded. He didn't smile that often, but there was something to be said in making progress with a difficult text. Arms folded in front, he grunted and seemed almost pleased. "We should take a couple notes and prepare to call it a night. Would not do to stay up too late. I honestly don't know why I hear footsteps on the roof sometimes."

"I am told roof-running is a popular game among the Crab and Dragon."

She shrugs.

"But, yes, we should probably call it a night soon."
