Ichiro was walking from here to there doing something utterly trivial when he was flagged down by a group of sensei looking at planters and debating.

Once they had all given their visions for the garden and asked his opinion few were surprised that the boy shared Hida-sensei's vision for a hearty practical garden that would look good but be mostly self sustaining and require little upkeep.

What may have surprised them though is his sharp eye for how things should be placed, he clearly had an ability to plan and envision things not yet there and how they would look. The large Moto also held surprising amounts of knowledge about plants, their requirements and where best to display them to make them look the best. He even did it without cursing at or insulting anyone.

Nobuko had been tagging along just to Ichiro's side, walking with him while their paths crossed conveniently and not because she had found an excuse to join him for a few moments. During this time, they were waved down by the Sensei and the discussion explained. She felt very flattered they wanted the opinion of the students.

And Nobuko certainly had opinions about which garden seemed the most appropriate for the facilities!

...Opinions that were promptly thrown out the window as soon as Ichiro made his own preferences known.

"Ah, yes. Self-sustaining seems the most appropriate," she agreed quickly, justifying the opinion with a further, "The facilities are only used in full a short time out of the year by the Ashigaru. During the rest of the time they largely stand empty save for a very small force who are preoccupied with other duties. Ease of maintenance for those not trained in the ways of ensuring such lofty gardens usually preferred must be taken into consideration..."

She further proved herself to be knowledgeable and able to add to the discussion in all aspects they were speaking on, but excelled in the topic of arrangements.

When they were done, she bowed to the sensei and continued her idle path from here to there that just so happened to coincide with Ichiro's.

Miya Wyn decides to wade into the debate, making a showing on behalf of the Imperials.

"Well I mean, Feng Shui is like highly over rated, its not like the Kami would actually notice anything, and the way gardens work you can just put plants anywhere you like right? I mean even the cactus garden can have a beautiful array of flowers in like eye catching formats, I mean I am sure Crab get bored staring at the empty wall all day, so they have to know a little about what they are doing in gardening right?"

Tanshin was completely out of his element. Growing food he at least had some passing knowledge of. Growing things simply for appearance was beyond him. This is why he was not a courtier.

He seemed most aligned in thought to the arguments of Shosuro Tomoe.

when asked about the placement of different plants, Tanshin could only shrug, and tried to agree.
He tried applying what he knew from his village to flowers, which turned out to not be applicable at all.
He was able to speak a bit more credibly about the arrangement of flowers, pointing out that beyond the delicacy of the bloom and its colour were important elements, the symbology of the flower itself was important when an Ikebana piece was viewed as a tale.

Feeling embarassed, Tanshin walked away from the debate, with only the briefest of bows.

He understood that the garden was for future students and for the residents of Hirosaka. To him it was important that the plants have many purposes and Tomoe sensei made sense.

Kokyou knew nothing about plants. But, now, as a Shugenja, he was capable of moving earth and stone. So, this topic got his attention.

Approaching the sensei quartet, the Mantis boy starts nodding while rubbing his chin. He says, "Doesn't matter the directions, Kitsuki-sensei, this ain't a ship, 'tis a garden: plants 'ave no sails t' be worryin' about cardinal directions."

Nodding to Hida Goroharu, he adds, "Aye, better t' 'ave strong, succulent plants that shall grow up despite the weather. Be it good or bad, they must endure. Jus' like the students here.""

Kokyou looks to Doji Murashige and tries to speak, but her beauty strikes him so badly he doesnt say a thing and allows her opinions on Ikebana to flourish a bit more.

Finally, he says to Shosuro Tomoe, "If these we be medicinal plants, we would be out o' 'em in a week aft we take the full defense crew. 'twould ruin the garden."

Sasaiko is passing by when she hears the debate in progress, and she joins in. Her perspective works in terms of spiritual alignment, and she is forceful in putting her point across, but arrangement and nourishment exceed her understanding at the moment. Still, Doji-sensei was good to her, and she feels she must offer such support as she can, in turn.

Kitsuki-sensei's suggestion had a lot of appeal to Kai's sensibilities. Pretty, yet practical, and the self-renewing nature of the garden was an affirmation of the cyclical nature of life and the spirit or some such.

Kai even had suggestions for what kinds of plants to get and which ones were most harmonious. As for actually laying out the garden or, well, conveying their thoughts on the matter eloquently, well, the Kaito still had some ways to go...
