Mai was ready to come back with a vengeance. Sure, she did not succeed the best at the spellcasting, so she was going to show everyone she could.... write very pretty. That's OK. Not the most exciting thing, but damn was Mai going to write pretty.

And she did. In fact, Doji-sensei was impressed. Well, that certainly put the spring back in Mai's step.

Kokyou takes the brush in hand, dips the tip into the nankin ink and swooshes one character with extreme elegance. He reminds himself of its ancient form and completes the second character.

故郷

He raises the parchment so all class can see. His name. It fills up the long scroll he was given. No need for other characters there. Kokyou's ego was too great to allow it.

What pleasant weather to stay inside and work on something quietly. Mari knelt beside the small, neat table with the scroll laid across it, adjusting a few things slightly on the table as she glanced around at the others in the room, wondering what each of them were thinking. Some of them, like her, seemed at home doing something like this while others seemed out of their element a bit. She thought back to the physical test and the hand-to-hand practice over the past few days; maybe she could help out of a few of the other students get their calligraphy down if they helped her out with some of the more physical training. She's have to figure out something.

Either way, as the thunder rumbled in the background, she took her brush and began in long, elegant strokes that flowed from character to character with fairly minimal extraneous movement. The results were elegant and refined, and the meticulousness of the action would hopefully mean that she could keep up the detail for a long time without becoming sloppy. After a while, she could feel her hand begin to ache, but not before she was satisfied with the calligraphy she had made.

The young Bayushi entered the literacy training, yawning. He took the scroll. He dipped the brush gingerly and started the strokes in such a beautiful matter that he surprised himself. Even in this sleepy state Kaidan remembered the way of the ancient brush kanji strokes. Since he had to continue writing, the Bayushi started to waver to the enthralling call of Yume-do and started to get sloppy.

One of the few training focuses Tanshin had was in Calligraphy. "This should be easy, he thought."

While his work was not extra-ordinary, he was happy with the results.

Shiso was more used to drawing maps than playing calligrapher (as opposed to casual scribbler), but it couldn't be that much different, right? First, they channeled their inner flare! *harrumph*

Goat 4. Unskilled Calligraphy w/ Awareness. Raise! TN 8: 2d10 12

Then, they channelled their inner ingenuity! *hoomph* And there was indeed a lot of ingenuity to be channelled! He'd invent characters so ancient that Yobanjin would ask their ape ancestors about them! Apes sculpted from tears and blood of Sun and Moon, of course, let's stay duly creationist.

Goat 4. Unskilled Calligraphy w/ Int. Raise! TN 8: 4d10 27 - FR!

And then... it was all supposed to be written down. *yawn* Shiso could only hope that flaregenuity would be enough to carry them through the ordeal of something that looked like... work.

Goat 4. Unskilled Calligraphy w/ WP. Raise! TN 8. VP.: 2d10 9

The last part of actually doing something was horrible. Shiso's wrist ached. But the effect... sweet Heavens!

Nesrin could write, but that had always been a very functional thing. Tidy, precise characters marching down a page. Now they wanted something more, something less technical and more artistic--expression through not just the meaning of the words, but their shape.

With her favorite travel poem in mind, she tried very hard to keep its wisdom and humor in mind and ...let that travel to her hand? She tried to recall the first time her sensei had tried to explain how her feet would drive the power of the blade in her hand, how it felt to connect such disparate parts.

It kind of worked. Nobody would be hanging this on their wall though.

Matsu Qiang was immensely pleased with his success at drawing the archaic version of the character for “Lion”. It was so elegant, so crisp! There was no way he could improve on that. So he drew it again. And again.

Finally, he turned in a long scroll with the archaic character for “Lion” repeated thirty-eight times. “What do you mean, they were supposed to be different characters?” he asked, sounding surprised.

Sanzo had never trained in brushwork, so this was bound to be an... interesting experience. Despite his inexperience, however, his sense of aesthetics was quite good, likely something he picked up from his his family. Likewise, his familiarity with the old forms of writing was pretty good, too! He had seen a number of old scrolls and writings back home with the Asako.

His longform abilities were lacking, however. Asako had started to write out a scroll, but his hand began to cramp and he found himself rushing to finish. The result was a rather sloppy scroll.

Re: Literacy Training (Mandatory Event)

Post by Kaito Kai » Sat Jul 04, 2020 8:51 am

Once upon a time, Kai heard a story about two brave Phoenix warriors who held off the onslaught of an army (whose identity changed in the telling, often whatever more warlike clan was making war noises at the Phoenix at the time). They defended a calligraphy school, warding off arrows, so that those within could focus on their writing with the focus and precision it demanded. The moral lesson, of course, being that focus and precision at the brush was matched by focus and precision with arms, both enabling the other, as was the right and proper samurai way.

Turns out not really thinking too hard about what you're doing lends itself to transcription work. Kai's work product, a reasonably competent piece transcribing the Phoenix tale, seemed acceptable enough work. Sure beats repeatedly writing out ofuda charms, anyway.
