Prashant walked into the evening lesson much less focused than he had in the morning - so many new people, so many new experiences, it was hard to focus!

As he went in to answer his first question, he was still thinking about what he would do when he had some free time later. He heard the word 'Saibankan' in the question, and, remembering some of his teachers speaking about the Judge, started saying whatever he remembered about the reformation of the Law system... then he said the Emerald Magistrates had been created by the first Emperor. Wrong! Should have paid more attention to the question and stuck to the basics...

For the next question: "Does the minor clan of the Mantis have Shugenja?" He smiled broadly as he heard it, remembering his conversation with Kokyou and Mai just a few days earlier. "Hai, sensei! The Mantis Shugenja are specialised in controlling the weather, and train to become..." he stops for a moment to remember what Mai had said "Thunderers! They use their abilities to make their journeys in the sea less dangerous!"

That was a lucky! He should try and seek her again later, he would like to know more about this different way of dealing with the kami!

For the final question, another sensei asked him about one of Shinsei's koans: "Two monks were looking at a flag dancing in the wind. One monk said, "the flag is moving". The other said, "the wind is moving". Which one is right?

Iuchi stopped for a while, reflecting on his lessons on Shinsei and his teaching, closing his eyes. A moment later, he opened his eyes and spoke, calmly and clearly. "It is the monks' mind that is moving at that moment, Sensei."

The sensei nods, Prash smiles at him, bowing as respectfully as he manages, and walks back, smiling as he still pondered about the deeper meaning of the Koan.

The little Kuni waits his turn to provide input on subjects that he considers to be of importance. As expected of the monk, he seems to have a good grasp of Theology, answering with accuracy. When the topic of Bushido comes up, he gives the most obvious answers that Crab would be expected to know about Courage and Duty, but surprisingly does not lack for understanding of the other tenets. And when Omens are being discussed he shows a clear understanding of that subject as well. It's clear that the Yotsuo is likely far more cerebral than physical, but that is to be expected from a family known for maintaining secret libraries and intellectual, if otherwise distasteful, pursuits.

Study was far from Dao's strength, but he had absorbed enough knowledge from sheer proximity to the Dragon libraries it seemed to not make a complete fool of himself.

In fact, on his chosen subject of the war heroes of Rokugan, he managed to impress the sensei with a few little known facts.

Suzuran knew about Imperials; Which made sense since she was one herself, and since she lived in the capital. She also knew a decent amount about theology, being a pious young woman. But Bushido? It wasn't so much that she didn't know much about Bushido, per say. But her actual knowledge was filtered through rose tinted glasses, an idealistic and naive view of each of the tenants.

Ichiro hated studying, easily his least favorite part of any training. He started with subjects he could stand testing on laws and history, the war questions were harder than he expected but he had always looked at strategy and tactics rather than memorizing old wars that were long over.

Overall he did better than he expected but wasn't overly impressive.

Ah, study. That was a worthwhile endeavor for any Phoenix!

Kai's good mood deflated somewhere when they heard the questions being asked.

This...none of this...was what was taught at their dojo at home. And now it was their turn to be questioned.

"I, ah, well, the growth of red moss on the side of a poplar tree is usually a sign of..."

"Rites to be observed in most temple settings include..."

They were doing so well extrapolating theological information, as well as signs and portents, from what they were taught at school! Sadly, that information was not too useful when it came to historical truth.

The irony of a Kaito not knowing history was, of course, something Kai themselves would have been unable to fully appreciate.

Given plenty of time to ruminate on his bout of anxiety during sparring in the morning routine, Akio arrived to the evening lesson early with a clear mind - this time, he was more than prepared. This test was more than within his domain.

The first question was of warfare, asking for a conflict between the Lion and Scorpion. Eager to answer as it involved his patron clan, Akio spoke of a conflict between the Scorpion and the Lion, coming to a head with the failed siege of Kyuden Ikoma in the year 533 - and the subsequent counteroffensive that led to the capture of the then-named Meiyo no Shiro, renaming it Kenson no Gakka - Humility's Lesson. Of course, the boy omitted the small detail of the wholesale slaughter of the castle's entire garrison by the Lion after they captured it. Maybe he just forgot.

The second he received was of theology - specifically, for details of the largest shrine dedicated to Bishamon, the Fortune of Strength. Unsurprisingly, the Lion shugenja was able to answer in no small detail, speaking of the priests that tended to Bishamon Seido and the ceaseless weeks of nonstop prayer when the forces of the Lion went to war - unending until their return.

The third was of history - asking the boy what led to the explosive growth of Ryoko Owari Toshi. Akio answered by detailing the rise of the popularity of opium, and of its Imperial regulation and of the lone clan that was permitted to grow the opium poppy - the Scorpion.

  • When it was Kitsune Setsuna's turn to be called up, he breezily stood up from his seated position, voice clear as a bell and most confident with every word he spoke. Sure, he wasn't the best at yelling, but when it came to the knowledge he'd learned, history in particular, he was very proud of his knowledge. Any trace of meekness melted away like a puddle in the blazing summer sun.

"In the year Eighty Nine of the Isawa Calender, a wave of uncivilized gaijin bandits began to assail the ancestral lands of the Kirin Clan, where my ancestors had been stationed as record keepers and historians for when Lady Shinjo-no-Kami and our kin would return. Before that year, our clan had served alongside the Ikoma family faithfully as scouts, huntsmen, and strike forces. The lands had been very fertile and we were clever farmers, bringing bountiful harvests every year."

A small clearing of his throat, and he purposefully did not look any Lion students in the eyes for this next part. "Logically, we did not wish to lose those lands. So we petitioned the Emperor, Hantei Genji-tenno, for assistance, and due to the proximity and prior ties, the Lion clan was assigned the duty to help. More than a year of bloody conflict was spent eradicating the barbaric tribes that had invaded our lightly populated lands, but in the end they were successful. We marched to return, but were halted by the Matsu armies. The lands were cleared by the Lion, we were told, so it would remain in Lion hands. The remnants of Lady Shinjo's peoples gathered after the winter and waged war against the much larger and more powerful forces, but they could not retake the lands."

"Hantei Genji-tenno had no other choice, but was wise and found a solution bring peace to both clans. He accepted the Lion annexation of the former Kirin lands to the Lion, and awarded the remnants of Lady Shinjo's people new lands in the south. These people, he declared, were now the Fox Clan, the first Minor Clan of the Empire. In addition to this, he issued a proclamation forbidding full scale warfare of Great Clans versus Minor Clans, which spared them from any further aggressions." From the Lion Clan, he left unsaid. With that, he sat back down.

Sanzo had studied what little he could between the various lessons his sensei put him through. He had meant to read on the road, but he couldn't bring himself to do it, always more interested in his new surroundings and simply enjoying the travel. The young samurai did feel a need to do well, though; the Phoenix were known for their knowledge, and even bushi were no exception. He chooses topics he feels he can at least recall a little about.

He ends up doing a pretty decent job, recalling bits of knowledge about Imperials, Bushido, and Theology.

Tanshin attempted to keep a low profile, and stick with the topics he felt most comfortable with. He wasn't much of a student, but had a mind for retaining information.

He knew the basics of the Great Clans, and could recall some moderate facts regarding the History of the Empire.
He knew his Isawa Sensei would be proud as he was able to answer multiple questions regarding Theology.

Right... Lore... Kazuko cringes as the sensei announces the subject that they will be focusing on this hour... She's never been one to read up on the various subjects of the empire, rather choosing to pick up more practical or fun skills. After all, there are just far too many books to read and not enough time to read them all. There's no way she could just sit still and go through scroll after scroll after scroll. Not all books are bad though; she doesn't mind books about strategy and war but imperials and law just bore her out of her mind. Luckily she still knows the basics of Bushido and surprises herself by managing to answer just about every question on war. However, when it comes to Omens she flubs horribly and gives the wrong answer confidently, much to her embarassment. Oops!

[Catch up rolls for this event, at GM request]

“So, there are many aspects of bushido, some of the more important of which include Honor, and Courage, and Duty,” Matsu Qiang began. “And, sure, there are other tenets of bushido that are super important too, but the cool thing about these principles is that you can demonstrate them in battle!”

“You know, war,” he expounded. “The big fight. Combat. The conflict between man against man. What every samurai lives for! The clash of weapons. Bashing heads. Fighting for our clans and families. You know… war.”

Realizing he was repeating himself, Qiang hurried on to the next topic. “But of course even more important than just launching a frontal attack is to learn strategy by studying history. For example, in the sixth century, we learned that it’s a bad idea to attack the Dragon Mountains in the winter time. I mean, frontal attacks are great and all, but until the sixth century nobody knew that launching a frontal attack on a steep mountain while charging through a snow drift was bad!”

“But now we know better!” Qiang exclaimed, shaking a fist in emphasis. “Because of history! History is the best!”
