Welcome to the Dojo! (Mandatory Event)

by Vutall
Agasha Sumiko, the Ruby Champion, stands at the head of the open grounds of the Hirosaka Doji. Once all of the students have assembled, she gives a very shallow bow to them all and speaks to them in a cool, precise voice.

"Students of the Empire, welcome. You have all been brought here to undergo a special period of instruction which the Emperor has established to test how well the different clans are preparing the future generations to serve him. Your time here will be difficult, covering a many number of activities and studies that will likely be something new to you, but I have faith that each of you will do your family proud."

She pulls out a scroll and begins to read off of it.

"You are all expected to conduct your stay here as if it was your own dojo. Wake at the hour of Tiger and begin to prepare the interior of the Dojo for the day. Clean and eat at the Hour of the Hare. Be on the parade grounds and ready for martial instruction at the Hour of the Dragon. During the hour of Scorpion, you shall all ensure the parade ground is returned to order and cleaned. "

She pauses for a moment to take a breath, and then continues reading off the list on the scroll in a methodical manner.

"During the hour of the Horse, your afternoon meal is served. During the hour of the Goat, you will be instructed in different lessons we deem necessary for all Samurai. After, during the hour of the Monkey, you are expected to clean the dojo. The evening meal will be served at the hour of the Rooster, after you have cleaned yourself of the days sweat."

"The hour of the dog is yours to do as you see fit, but all students are expected to be in bed by the Hour of the Boar."

She furls up the scroll and puts it away. Giving the students a shallow bow again, she steps back and a group of sensei take her place and begin to lead the students through the morning kata. Sumiko watches for a few moments before turning and departing.
The eyes of the instructors are watching the students as they go through the morning kata. They are looking to see how each of them handle both areas they are familiar with, and those that may be foreign to them. If a student does well enough, the instructors will make a note of it and look to help them at some time during there stay at the Dojo.

The following skills are used during this kata:

First, the kata is a prayer, which uses Spellcraft/Intelligence.
Then, the kata moves to stretching, which uses Athletics/Reflexes
Next, the kata moves to basic unarmed strikes, which uses Juijutsu/Strength
Then, the katas moves to strong defensive stances, which uses Defence/Stamina
Next, the kata involves shouts, which uses Intimidation/Willpower
Then, a pairing of partners, which has each student bow to each other, using Etiquette/Awareness (This does not trigger Antisocial)
Then, one student is given a bokken and the other told to dodge them, taking turns, which uses Kenjutsu/Agility and Investigation/Perception (roll for both)
and then finally, the kata ends with group Meditation/Void.

All TN's are 6. For any roll that includes your Family Trait, the TN is increased to 8. For any Skill that is not part of your School that you pass, you gain +1 Dojo point. If a student succeeds at all rolls, they gain and additional +2 Dojo Points.

If you pass a roll by 2 or more, you gain +1 dojo point (even if the base roll did not original grant a point because the skill is a school skill)

If you have two or more explosions on a roll, you gain the Great Potential advantage for that skill

Characters with the Inner Gift: Foresight advantage gain +1 to their rolls

If any student has 6 or more Dojo points at the end of this event, they gain the attention of the instructors, granting them a temporary Ally (1/1) who may be called on at some point in the game for extra mentoring.

by Zashi
Great, so we are starting with the things that I know the least about. Yeah, this bodes well.

The prayer, at least, was something that Zashi knew, calling upon practice with communing with the kami. Zashi stretches out, unfamiliar with the routine that the others are doing, but relying on inherent nimbleness makes it surprisingly easy. It's the same thing with unarmed attacks...something Zashi has had zero training with, but relying on instinct seems to be enough to get through. Surprisingly enough, working on defensive stances comes over easily as well, something natural and instinctive making it easy to keep up with the movement.

Ok, shouting next. I can do shouting. I'm not a shouter. But the instructors, they are shouters. Pretend to be an instructor!

It's an, well, unconventional method of trying to be intimidating, but Zashi feels confident that the cry is sufficiently warlike.

Continuing the trend, Zashi realizes a complete lack of knowledge of proper dojo etiquette, but looking around Zashi spies a Crane at work, and figures that stealing their motions will do just as well. Then, it comes to the bokken. Zashi is white knuckling the bokken as the first strike comes in, and is somewhat amazed when they execute a perfect block and counter attack.

Zashi moves to the side, panting from exertion, ready to calm down in the mediation. Again, while something Zashi has been trained with, practice with communing with the kami pays off here, and is able to slip easily into a no-mind state.

At the end, Zashi cracks an eye, "So, how did I do?"

by Doji Sakura
The little bundle of energy known as Sakura listened mostly intently. It was all about kata, which wasn't that fun really, and artisans didn't do kata anyway! Not this kinda kata!

But, she had to do it. So she did. Kind of.

She made a motion that looked like a prayer, but clearly wasn't. Her stretching was pinpoint perfection, she was very limber it seemed!

Then some unarmed strikes. Surprisingly, she was very good at this, her strikes likely being able to deal a dent in anything. The seneis would take note about this tiny Doji.... especially as she somehow swapped over to defensiveness pretty decently.

The shouting however startled her, and she didn't really put any effort into this terrifying thing. Why shouting? It didn't make sense!

The shouting finished with Sakura covering her ears, but she noticed others turning to pair which was weird. She did it though, smiling and bowing to the boy who was standing next to her. Then they sparred! Or it was kind of a spar. Sakura more tripped over her own feet and fell over onto the boys bokken, meaning she lost or something. When did they get to the part that had forges? That was next right?

In her total confusion, she missed the group meditation starting, and she just kind of stood there watching.

But where's the art?

Otoko was what one would call a bit of a specialist. She'd studied certain things to the detriment of others, and it showed. She shone (in a Yogo sort of way) where her school's training was concerned, but only seemed to barely make herself presentable in remembering to bow and give a bit of a shout.

It was a performance of bookends.

Masuyo was ready to get started. Kata were great fun for the bouncy little Dragon. She knew nothing about prayers and it up a bit but she figured she would do better in the future. Athletics, juijitsu, defense.... those were thing they practice back home. Intimidation? I can yell! I'm a big scary dragon! Rawr!

Turned out she could bow all nice and proper despite her time isolated in the mountains. With the bokken she was pretty good actually. She thought about practicing with one in the future, until it was her turn to guard. She was too busy looking the other way at a pretty Crane girl swinging her bokken and got a nice tap to the thigh.

Rubbing it to work out the pain, she sat down to meditate with the others. She relaxed her mind easily, and forgot about the sore spot in no time.

by Kuni Yotsuo
Yotsuo began following instruction as best he can. His prayers were well recited and showed a keen intellect, and he seemed to stretch well enough to prepare for the physical aspects. His hand to hand kata was less than stellar though, as was his self defense. When it came to shouting, the young boy seemed to lack the lungs for it. He showed surprising propriety and courtesy for a Crab, particularly the Kuni who have a reputation of being curmudgeonly at times. Perhaps surprisingly for a monk, he seemed to handle a bokken well enough, until the sensei remembered that his particular order actually trained with blades, because you can't punch someone's head off when they need a second. His eyes seemed to become distracted during his turn observing his partner. When all was said and done, however, he was able to easily find his center, clearly more practiced with that than anything else.

It wasn't the worst showing, but it was far from the best.

Yasuki Ginkarasu listens attentively. Do my family proud. Okay! I got this Agasha-sama! I can do that!

"Hi Kami! Do you like mochi? I could sell you some mochi?" He looks around trying to figure out if any of the kami were paying attention, but just like every day when he was six, he could not see or hear them. A little hurt that they didn't appear when he needed them the most he'd ever need them, he ran to prove he was really athletic. Back flips! Hah! Landed them!

Punches!

Nope! Didn't land those! Not a one. Wow, he really thought he'd learned how to punch after seeing himself get punched so much. But no, he'd learned how to defend himself! Haha! He could do this all day!

"I CAN DO THIS ALL DAY!" He yells out, stomping his foot as his bellow reverberates around the dojo. He totally forgets to add the sama as part of his intimidating yell and gets marks off. Clearly, he could not do his family proud, just his school!

When he takes up the bokken he wields it proficiently, managing not to poke himself or anyone else in the eye. But that's about it. His skill at dodging attacks is unsurpassed however! "Hah! I'm too fast for you! You're telegraphing your intent from a mile away! Hah!"

The calming meditation afterwards doesn't quite work as he keeps peeking around to see how everyone else is doing.

The small Imperial enters with the others he takes a few moments to prepare himself, mumbling through the prayer and just barely making it through the proper words. He then moves through the Katas, easily completing the first two but stumbling during the third. He then almost scares himself with the strength of his out shout. This seems to give the boy more confidence and he moves easily through the bows and sparring.

Kenji was nervous, would he live up to the expectations that were placed upon him? Apparently the gods had not been well disposed towards him today as he couldn't remember the exact text of the prayer. The stretches and punches were easy for him, but he was too distracted by the defensive kata. Slightly frustrated he let loud Kia from himself, which took him so much that he made a wrong bow in the next exercise. He took the bokken and attacked well, but did not manage to defend himself. At least he could focus well during the group mediation.

by Utaku Ichiro
Ichiro listens attentively to the rules and the structure of the dojo. He intended to excel and part of excellence wold be being properly dutiful even if said duties were dull and boring. That being said it really wasn't much worse than his previous dojo. A little more time on cleaning, a little less time on combat but that was probably to be expected compared to Moto sensei.

When the time for the kata came he did his prayers dutifully but without much heart before moving into the first physical portion. All were basic skills taught by his previous sensei so came readily to him even if he had not yet mastered the basics of defense.

His kiai, however, was a little lacking as he grew concerned thinking about the upcoming bow. How formal did they expect them to be? He was used to a rough bow in dojo, sometimes barely more than a nod if it was a busy and hectic day of training, surely they wanted more than that. As such he likely overcompensated bowing too low in what could be mistaken as an insult in other conditions.

Thankfully the kata then returned to true combat skills. His kenjutsu was flawless and he also found it easy to track and judge his opponents strikes, pirouetting out of the way seamlessly.

Despite his annoyance at his failing with the kiai, the etiquette he had known would flop, he found his center and sunk into peaceful meditation with ease.

Otomo Nobuko was fully aware that her training in the more physical arts left much to be desired by any who wanted to see her wield the wakazashi she would eventually wear. But she also knew that her focus, her goals, did not require her to be martially active in the long run and that, at some point, she would have a yojimbo to act as her champion should she somehow find herself in a position to need that sort of defense.

That didn't mean she didn't try, of course, but she certainly fell about where she expected to when the testing of basic knowledge began. Including excelling at the few parts that didn't involve physical ability. She did rather surprise herself with her ability to avoid being hit, however. It wasn't exceptional by any means, but not going back to the rooms with potential bruises to cover was certainly a nice way to end the testing.

by Akodo Yui
Yui was no shugenja, or even much for praying, but she'd seen others do it enough times to actually get it right somehow. The stretches that followed were harder to mess up; and while she was not really one for using her fists most of the time, she managed to display a solid form...

...the same could not be said for her defensive posture, however. Everybody knew that offense was the best defence anyhow; she really didn't see why they were supposed to learn this stuff since they were clearly never going to actually need it in the real world. She applied the same logic to shouting. What sort of idiot shouted while fighting people?

...

Okay, she shouted *a lot* when she was sparring in the dojo. Or fighting for real. Or sometimes just in general. But whoever was grading her on her shouts clearly didn't know what a good shout sounded like.

Finally it was time for some actual sparring! Something she was *good* at! She was even good at bowing! She bowed so good! Really, they should just give her extra points just for bowing so well! And to make up for the fact that her being good with a sword was *expected*, and thus didn't earn her as much approval as it really *should* have.

After attending closely to the instructions, Sasaiko gives her best efforts.

The prayer is a familiar one for her, and she recites it flawlessly--and with panache. Unfortunately, that elan does not carry over to the stretching, and she missteps amid it. Flushing with the shame, she lets her anger power her into her series of blows and defensive stances, and her voice rings with the shouts that follow. And she continues on, bowing sharply, striking surely with a bokken, and avoiding the return blow with ease.

She struggles to calm herself at the end, as might be expected, but she manages. With a bow to the instructors and to kamiza, Sasaiko resumes her seat.

Thank you sensei, feels like I've studied most of these things at least a little.

Haruki takes a deep breath and closes his eye, concentrating on connecting with his grandfather's knowledge, and finding nothing. Don't ask me for help, this is supposed to be the time to learn what YOU know Whoops, went too deep into himself, better loosen up and relax. Doing the same stretches he did when leading his Kohai back home put Haruki back into the groove. Now onto the defensive stances that were drilled into him, and 1,2,3 . . . and good.

Best to avoid calling on others again, just shout. Almost got it this time, I probably just need to grow a little more and it'll do for battle.

Facing his partner for the next session, he bows and presents the bokken to the partner. It's great to be able to show off the stuff he specialized in for once! After avoiding most of the hits, granting a couple of grace hits near the end, Haruki politely receives the bokken and proceeds to show how it's done. Then he bows to his partner before taking a position in the group meditation, no need to think, just relax and get ready for the next tests.

by Kokyou
Kokyou provides his prayers in a good mood seeing all those new faces around. Many were so different.

As they start to stretch out, the Mantis boy scoffs and just looks around, since he's already too nimble and fast. Stretching are for old people like his dad.

When the real training begins, Kokyou shows why the Mantis wobbling fight technique is so interesting and precise.

Yet, there are no real defense techniques to that unless you're... well... drunk. He's too young for that. Let's skip it.

He does, though, shout some of his taunts with lines along, "Yaaaarr! Get back here! I ain't done punchin' yer head ye lard brained screechy gobshyte!" and, "Haaar! Have a face full o' me foot ye jelly boned thumb suckin' crud bucket!"

His insults are measured with a certain finesse never seen before in such islander stereotypes. When facing another student, Kokyou takes a moment to properly bow, as he has been instructed.

Being very fast on his feet, Kokyou manages to get some good strikes with the bokken, but, instead, doesn't really understand where the blows he's getting are coming from

In her total confusion, she missed the group meditation starting, and she just kind of stood there watching.
He smiles to the little girl waving a hand and saying, "Avast ye. They call me Kokyou."

by Iuchi Prashant
Prashant was as eager to meet his fellow students and sensei for the next few days as he was to discover what the sensei had in store for them. He seems almost centered as the Sensei tell them they are to go through a quite varied morning Kata - almost. He was a bit too excited to be really centered...

He starts with some prayers - this was not how the Iuchi usually related to the kami, but he still performed well, perfectly feeling the Air around him, the Earth below him, the Water dripping from his brow and the Fire of the others' excitement at the morning exercise.
Feeling good, he starts the stretching exercises, but ends up overextending while reaching his hand to his feet as he looks around at how the others are doing. That was a bummer, he really thought he got that! But well, let's see what comes next, he says, getting a smile back on his face.
In the hand-to-hand exercises, he manages an unremarkable, if decent kick, then does really well in a good, well-practiced defense Kata.
The excitement of gaining his confidence back clearly shows at his strong kiai shout, that rings through the dojo along with Ginkarasu's. Way to go! he thinks, smiling as the sound echos.
He doesn't even think about his form while bowing to the student in front of him, and thus manages a passable bow, somewhat to his surprise.
Getting a bokken for the sparring part of the kata, Prash finally feels really centered, calculating his training companions movements perfectly to avoid blows and getting a good side strike, showing practiced movements with a sword that his opponent wouldn't expect from a shugenja in training.
After a good finish to the sparring, he sits down in a practiced lotus position, closes his eyes, breathes in and quickly clears his mind.

Bayushi Jiro listened patiently to the litany of tasks, then swallowed his sigh as he was expected to behave like some confused, bellowing bushi. Ah, well, it couldn't be helped. He slipped into prayer with little difficulty, his mind wandering not to Bishamon but to Hotei as he sought the patience he knew he would need to find contentment.

When the peaceful moment passed, he slid easily into his stretches. Then he rose, and threw the weakest of shadow boxes, his eyes flicking left and right to see who caught sight of that as he slid with some effort into a defensive stance, the better to cover his error. Then came the shout, surprisingly deep and mighty from the willowy scion, then the turn and bow, which was executed with the grace of a fully-trained courtier. Jiro's youth in the inner halls and courts of Kyuden Bayushi counted for much.

Then came the surprise. Presented with a bokken, Jiro turned with great speed, fell into a crouch, and struck the lower thigh of his opponent. Had it been live steel, the other child would likely not have been able to reply, so filled with pain would they have been. Unfortunately, live steel his was not, and Jiro was forced to wince as the other boy brought his fake sword down for a gently tap on Jiro's shoulder.

Thrown by that miscalculation, Jiro did not even bother to try and find his center. He just kept his eyes fixed on his former opponent in an unnerving, emotionless stare until time was called.

by Soshi Shiso
Shiso concealed a yawn at the restrictive curriculo-schedule. It didn't seem like too much fun, so they were meant to make their own entertainment, and soon. They realised, however, that in order to create some space for shenanigans, they cannot start off on bad reputation. So Shiso decided to make an honest effort when under intense scrutiny!

Dragon 1. Int/Spellcraft. Unskilled. TN8.: 2d10 12

Such piety, befitting a member of a priestly family! [Family Trait, +2 Points]

Dragon 1. Ref/Athletics. TN6.: 2d10o10k1 9

Such flexibility in the small body! [School Skill, +1 Point]

Dragon 1. Str/Jiujutsu. TN6.: 1d10 2

... Cat paws didn't cut it though. [Nope!]

Dragon 1. Sta/Defence. TN6.: 1d10 6

... Dodging was something Shiso could do, it was just a lot of work! Phew! [+1 Point]

Dragon 1. WP/Intimidation. TN6.: 1d10 5

No... they couldn't be scary, even trying. Shiso burst into snicker in the midst of it. That was too rich. [Nope!]

Dragon 1. Awa/Etiquette. TN6.: 3d10o10k2 13

Bowing was fine. Everyone could bow. [+1 Point]

Dragon 1. Ag/Kenjutsu, Per/Investigation. TN6.: 2#1d10 9 6

Remember, Shiso, it's just like stealing dango with a fishing rod. They imagined the opponent to be a big dango. It helped! Not only was the poke elegant, but the following dodge also effective! [+3 Points]

Dragon 1. Void/Meditation. Phantom Skill Rank from VP TN6.: 2d10o10k1 5

Bokken poking was so much fun that they weren't able to focus in the end though, getting itchy feet. [Nope!]

Overall, so much focus was an ordeal anyway. Is it going to be like this all the time?!

by Asako Saburo
Sickly as he might have been, the young man with the yellow eyes stepped along with several of the fellows, taking up his position and bowing crisply and appropriately to his sensei. The prayers were a smooth thing, the kind of act that was so practiced that the instructors probably barely took notice, because if an Isawa trained shugenja to be screwed up their morning prayers there wasn't a whole lot of hope for them, now was there? Saburo wouldn't have argued the point.

When they began to move into the kata, Saburo barely contained a sigh of relief. He actually knew this kata and had performed it in the past with his tutor back home. Over and over and over again, he'd drilled it, so this wasn't new material to him. He proceeded smoothly into the stretches before his practiced and well familiar hand struck each motion unerringly, the every motion of his body a rigid, formulaic presentation of exactly what was expected of the student, before moving into the defensive stances and giving a ribald kai shout. Fuck that took a lot out of him. Fuck, he hated that part of the kata, because it always left him winded.

Still, the boy new his manners and when paired up, he bowed formally and appropriately before pulling the bokken into stance and striking with precision while nimbly dodging out of the way of their attack despite a lack of training or finesse to the whole thing. Still, the entire kata had been performed not flawlessly but well. Admittedly, by the time he reached the end, he was exhausted and so finally could not absolutely keep up his meditative focus the way that he wanted. Internally, he was berating himself for the failure there, but he nevertheless bowed one more time, having caught the eye of one or two of the sensei already even in the midst of his mental chastisement. Someone would be calling him to the side later...
