Kaito Kai vs Kitsune Zashi

Some boys might have been overconfident to be paired against a girl. For a whole host of reasons, Zashi wasn't, not the least of which was the fact that the Phoenix monk towered over him by at least a head. Of course, that was common enough a problem for the pipsqueak. Even if that wasn't the case, Zashi had needed a partner to practice against, and the one he had available had been his recently betrothed, Doji Sakura.

Who was a tiny waif even shorter than he was.

And she had thrown him around like a ragdoll.

Zashi had eventually worked on a way to compensate for his size. Tiny as he was, his center of gravity was lower than darn near anyone else we would be competing against. Dropped into a low sumai squat, he would be surprisingly difficult to topple. The trick was holding the position for the entire round.

I could use a little help on that

Reaching out his senses, Zashi communes with the Earth kami of the ring, giving himself some extra endurance to keep himself going during the match,

[Kaito Kai]

Kai may have height and reach, but what she also had was an almost wan frailty to her. She was strong in many ways, physicality wasn't one of them. Which is why she wasn't terribly excited about the prospect of having to grapple with anyone.

When she was paired up with Zashi, she bowed respectfully to the Fox.

Opening with a lackluster growl that probably wouldn't have intimidated a small child, Kai was quick off her feet but not only was her leverage all wrong but - alas - the strength simply was not there for her body to achieve what she had planned out in her mind.

[Zashi]

Zashi's eyes widen with surprise. The Phoenix barely seems to respond with a push. He could likely easily knock her out right now of he wanted in brutal fashion.

But he had just chided the Matsu for being so rough. Instead, Zashi instead chooses to focus on technique, trying his best to give a series of textbook maneuvers and bats, with Kai pushed out of the arena with as much dignity as possible.

Alright, round 1 may not have been her finest showing.

Round 2 wasn't likely to shape up to be much better.

Zashi bows respectfully and resets.

"I'm not going to take you for granted Kaito-san. Please don't think too harshly of me."

Zashi drops back into position, and starts again, this time with a bit of flourish to showcase technique. Normally, the Fox wouldn't show off as much, but he has the chance to press an advantage and look good in the process. He manages to push out Kai again, giving her an artful somersault out of the arena.

Kai merely resumed her position, ready for what was likely the last of the three required rounds.

[Zashi]

Zashi lets out a deep breath, considering if he is being worse than the Matsu. He takes that consideration...and thinks of Sakura.

He kills that thought.

"Kyyyaaah!"

It's not not quite obvious as the last one, Kai seemingly trying to give her all on the last stage, but even with trying to showcase technique that blow her away, Zashi offers a flurry of arm thrusts, keeping Kai upright but gradually and deliberately pushing her out of the arena, falling a bit harder than Zashi intended.

As the referee calls the match, Zashi offers a hand and tries to pump both their hands into the air.

"You did everything you could the right way Kaito-san and you never wavered. I just want to make sure that you know that I could see it."

Kai refused to participate in the victory gesture.

She got up.

She may as well have been an Utaku for all she said during the meeting, which was to say nothing.

Almost nothing.

"I thought I saw a tail." Her quiet intonation was flat, perhaps confused. She did just get thrown about a lot.

She bowed. She was done here. She left.

[Zashi]

Zashi turns a bit ashen and clams up at the response, focusing on bowing properly to Kai and to the judge, without any sign of celebration.

The event was over. He had done every inch of what he set out to do, but there was no joy in it at the moment. Perhaps that would come when he was reunited with Sakura.
