Matsu Qiang stepped to the circle the teachers directed him to, and began a series of stretches while he waited for his opponent to arrive. The young Lion remembered Kenji from their town adventure last year; it had been quite a thing, though Qiang had gotten in
so much trouble over it.
He shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. This was no time for distractions.

The first day, the first test. Kenji had read Quiang's name on the flyer and was surprised how much the little lion had changed within a year.
He gave the lion a proper bow and greeted him: "Greetings, Matsu-san, I hope for a good Sumai".
After that Kenji prepared for the fight. May the better man win.

He was not as practiced in Sumai or its associated traditions as others, but he also went to wash his body with the holy water and spread salt in the area to drive away the spirits.
When he entered the ring, Kenji's smile disappeared and turned into a stern face.
Unbendingly he stood and waited for his opponent.
As soon as Quiang was ready for the match, Kenji would eject a kiai and test which of them would leave the match as the winner today.

“Hello, Kakita-san,” Qiang replied, his voice sounding rather colder than Kenji remembered. The young Lion stripped down to his fundoshi, revealing powerful muscles that had not been there a year ago. What had
happened to Matsu Qiang in the last year?!
Qiang flexed bulging biceps before turning back to Kenji and bowing. The Crane’s
kiai seemed not to affect the Matsu at all.
“I’m very sorry, Kakita-san, but I am not permitted to take it easy on you,” Qiang growled in a low tone. The effect was… chilling.

Whatever had gone into the lions was... frightening. Kenji suddenly realized they were no longer children. First Kokyou, then Kaidan, Now Quiang. He caught himself thinking that it would be better not to fight this fight, but he could not just give up, even if it was hard for him.
Too distracted from his thoughts, he didn't really put much effort into his first attempt to conquer the ring.

“Earth stance?” Qiang heard himself say, as if he recognized the Crane’s fighting style, but he somehow felt very far away from what was happening. “Even the highest mountains are worn down by the rushing rivers.”
Slipping inside Kenji’s guard, the Matsu seized the Crane and put him into a painful control hold. Once Qiang had the advantage, he applied some pressure to Kenji’s arm, just to make sure it was clear who was winning - before releasing the Crane from the grapple and stepping back to prepare for their next pass.

Kenji knew that Matsu was said to be able to become extremely angry. However, Kenji did not know what he had done to Quiang. He already felt the blood accumulate in his arm and cause swellings. This fight was hopeless. Still Kenji would not give up now, the only thing he would do here would be to show that his spirit could not be broken.

The Crane was unsettled now, and Qiang took full advantage. The young Lion’s footwork took him into close quarters again and he grabbed Kenji for a joint lock. Qiang felt certain he could break the Crane’s arm at this point.
It’s just another Crane, the Matsu part of his mind seemed to say.
Destroy him!
But Qiang remembered going over the school walls with Kenji to race about Hirosaka. After an effort to bring the berserker rage under control, the Lion released Kenji from the joint lock with only minimal bruises from the exchange.

Maybe that was the Kharma for giving the young man to the magistrate yesterday, maybe Kenji should have trained better.
He felt Quiang trying to break his arm first, but then he let up.
Something actually broke in Kenji. First this lion tried to cause him as much pain as possible and now he let go? "Have you lost your strength or what is going on here? Don't try to make it easy for me, I have my pride too, if you let go now you will become a coward, Matsu-san! I told you at the beginning, I expect a good fight," he hissed painfully between his teeth and grabbed him painfully.

The Lion's face turned cold at the Crane's insults. "You're right," he admitted through gritted teeth.
Stupid Crane and their stupid words. Why do they have to be right?
Quickly reversing the Kakita's attempt at a hold, Qiang seized Kenji's head and smashed it against the floor, hard.

The only pride Kenji had left was that he didn't scream in pain, which was probably most likely due to the fact that the world around him became kinda blurry. He couldn't really do anything except for concentrating not to scream in agony.

Dropping the Crane to the sand, Matsu Qiang stepped back to his side of the ring, his heart racing, to try and compose himself. He could hardly believe how much damage he had inflicted on poor Kenji’s body.
Beat the Crane at their own game, his father had told him. Was
this what he had meant? Qiang felt unsettled at the thought. It was what he had trained for …. and, frighteningly,
it had felt good.
Turning back to the fallen Crane, Matsu Qiang executed a precisely calibrated bow. “Good fight, Kakita-san,” he heard himself say in a formal tone.
Then he turned away.

Spending VP to act
Kenji straightened up in pain. Limping, he walked to the end of the ring and bowed to his opponent, just about to say something, when he collapsed again in pain. He let out a slight whimper. Kenji had never felt so much pain in his life.
