  • Air is precise, distant, and analytical. Air does not approach the matter directly, but with care, subtlety, and planning.
  • Earth is firm, grounded, and cautious. Earth prefers to act decisively, but only after due consideration.
  • Fire is passionate, inventive, and direct. Fire acts swiftly and with overwhelming force.
  • Water is flexible, responsive, and powerful. Water acts with confidence, flowing around the problem until it finds a solution.
  • Void is the element of no element, the mind of no mind. Void does not think, plan, or react. Void simply acts, moving in accordance with instinct and the natural path of the cosmos
.
The students are all gathered inside the Academy interior dojo and are met by Hida Goroharu, a large, burly Crab who is well known for his skill at Sumai.

"The first test of the Topaz Championship celebrates one of Rokugan's finest sports, as well as assesses your skill at fighting others without a weapon. No striking is allowed, you are only to attempt to grapple and push or throw your opponent out of the ring. The first to do so will be declared the winner of the event and gain appropriate points toward the Tournament. However, your techniques throughout the match will be examined as well, granting smaller points."

He then begins to pair students off, attempting to put similar physically fit people against one another.

When everyone has been paired off, he calls the pairs up one by one to observe them compete.

Judge Ring Hint:
"Remember, In sumai, as in life, a steady stance creates a solid foundation for success"
Event Rules:
Participants: Unlimited (Mandatory Event)

Spells: Spells: Allowed, Each roll is considered a "Round". You cast the spell just before the event begins and may not cast during. -
Kiho: Allowed, each roll is considered a "Round", Kiho must be activated at the start of the event, not during.
Kata: Allowed, as you activate it as a Free Action during the Initiative post and they last until the combat ends.
Tattoos: Allowed, as each roll is considered a "Round" and you may use free actions at any time.

You may NOT target an opponent with any of these abilities before the event begins.

If you purposefully harm an opponent outside of the realm of the Sumai event (By winning the contested Jiujutsu roll) or the Weaponry event (By winning the contested Weapon roll) you loose 1.0 honor and 10 topaz points. If you do so a second time, you will be sent home in shame, removed from the tournament (and thus the game)

Also please remember that Spellcasting in Rokugan is a very spiritual thing, and to ask for the kami to do something for you is an incredibly rare thing and should not be done lightly.

Please find the Thread that has your name in the title and make your first post, which should include your Initiative.

Select a Ring to use during this event. Unless the roll specifically mentions a trait, you must use that ring for the entire event.

Additionally, please post what your Strength score is.

To start off, each player will roll an Intimidation / Mental Trait, contested by their opponents Raw Willpower, gaining a straight bonus of their honor to the roll (so 2k2+5 for example). Any ability that benefits Fear resist rolls apply to the Willpower roll. If either players Willpower roll is lower than their opponents Intimidation, they suffer -1k0 to all further rolls in this event. This roll is not part of the combat and thus does not benefit from anything that applies in a skirmish. (This is NOT considered a Low Skill for this event)

Then, in Initiative order, players will roll Contested Juijutsu (Sumai) / Physical Trait. This is considered a Skirmish, so any techniques that benefit apply. Players start in and are considered in Attack stance and may not change their stance. Additionally, while this is considered an attack, players may not perform Maneuvers. The looser suffers their opponents Strength / keep 1 damage. (Damage is rolled by the person who won, they pick what dice to keep, and can be reduced by Void). If their opponent is brought to Down or worse, the person who delt damage will loose 10 topaz points and a 1.0 honor loss.

Conducted the contested rolls until one player has three wins, at which point the match is over and that player declared the winner

Rewards:
-The winner of each contested Jiujutsu roll gains +2 points (Maximum 6 points)
-Calling raises on Contested Jiujutsu rolls grant +2 points if you WIN the contested roll
-For every 10 you exceed your opponents Jiujutsu roll by, you gain an additional +1 point, up to your Void in additional points.
-The player who wins three contested rolls receives +10 Topaz points.
-At the end of the event, Hida Goroharu will reveal which Ring he felt was the most appropriate and you will gain +5 Topaz Points if you used it.

After the event is finished, you may attempt to Meditate to restore void points, though the TN is increased by +10 due to the difficulty of finding your center with so much going on around you.

Ginkarasu is absolutely present to watch the other matches. He's thrilled to see sumai, and so many different styles!

He cheers for Aiichiro and Nobuko loudest, though there are other favorites as well. Some of the Crane may be suprised to hear him cheering for Kakita's Kazuko and Kenji. He cheers for Miya Wyn and Hitoshi both, which is certainly confusing for those near him in the audience.

He gives some loud cheers for Utaku Nesrin as well, remembering a lucky cricket from months ago.

Sumai may not have been Prash's favourite style of hand-to-hand combat before, but it is clear his interest in it has increased much since last year's training. So he is one of those who joins Ginka to watch all other matches, and when he's not cheering for one of his friends or former companions in Hirosaka, he's cheering for whatever good moves he sees, and giving yells of support to spur everyone on as they participate.

Ginka and others in the crowd will notice him cheering even more excitedly for his clansmates - particularly the Ichiros and Nesrin, his friends from Hirosaka, but also for the Ide and Batbayar - but he also cheers strongly for Aiichiro, Kenji, and also Kaidan and Ginka himself.

If Ginkarasu's support for both competitors is confusing for some in the audience, they are in for a surprise, as Prash does the same in a few matches - Moto Ichiro's and Kokyou's, Mai's and Yotsuo's, and also Wyn's and Hitomi's. For the latter, his support initially goes mostly to his imperial friend, but when he notices who the Mantis opponent is, he yells his support for him as well in quite a few opportunities, even as he wonders who exactly that man is.

Nobuko watched the other matches eagerly. She cheered for Moto Ichiro, of course, but also for the other members of the Unicorn. As well as Ginkarasu when he was up. She even made her way to join him when they were both done with their matches so they could cheer on their friends together.

During this, she kept an eye out for Hitoshi. When she realized Wyn was facing him, she gave equal support to both, simply trying to show that she showed no real favoritism. But rather, that she was excited for everyone.

She would need to speak with Wyn later about the match, however, and what his assessment of Hitoshi's skills in the physical arena were.

"By the twirling mustache of the Orochi!"

Kokyou lets out as he looks at Mai wrestling with his jaw semi-opened in awe.

Eichiro is engrossed throughout all the matches, but is especially encouraging to the other Lion who are present.

"Give 'em the ol Nijiro Sneaker!" Eichiro bellows during Nijiro's match, "Lower your center, no not like that!"

"Alright Qiang-san, little more of that right!"

"Tsubasa, use your stature and get underneath!"

"Go Kichiro-san, one more push!"

He roars with excitement, win or lose and congratulates them all on their hard fought matches.

Ginkarasu sees Qiang's aggression and wonders how long Kenji will last.

"Gooooo Kenji-sama!"

He pulls out a fan and whispers behind it to them both, "Remember, courtesy on the battlefield can also mean caring for your fallen opponent. Perhaps Kitsu Tsubasa-san could ask the kami to intervene for your opponent, Matsu-san. But that request must come from you."

His bit of advice through, Eichiro puts his fan away.

"Kakita-san fought with great courage," Qiang replied politely. "If Kitsu-san is willing, giving the Crane a bit of healing would be a gracious gesture."

Kokyou nods at Qiang for his feat and sighs as he sees Kenji broken and battered. Not much he could do. Perhaps Mai could, as she had told him before. He lifts up and goes fetch her.

Eichiro indicates towards Matsu Qiang with his closed fan, "Our brother, Matsu Qiang-san wishes for aid to be given to his opponent if it can be managed." He subtly nudges the Matsu with his elbow, "Wasn't that just what we were speaking about?"

As Kenji collapses to the floor after his match, the Iuchi's usually easygoing smile turns to a more serious, if still calm expression, and he makes his way through, getting closer to the ring and those responsible for organising the event. He tries to look around to see if anyone moves in to care for Kenji, and how bad he is hurt exactly. When he can catch the attention of Goroharu and/or one of the other ones responsible for the ring, he bows respectfully, if a bit hurriedly, and speaks resolutely.

"Sensei, it is not much, but I would like to offer my help in healing Kakita-san, if you will allow me."

The Kitsu looks concerned.
"Yes, if Kakita-san would permit it, it would be a kindness if you or Iuchi-san could assist him," Qiang said politely, in response to Eichiro's prompting. His tone was more even, and if he held any ill-will towards Kenji after their match, it was not apparent.

"Water kami, hear me..."

He places his hands on Kenji and whispers a prayer...
