(Day 3, EM OPEN) Offerings to the Kami

[Ikoma Eichiro]

Having awoken early, Eichiro surprised his innkeeper with a request for his best bottle of sake. He strode boldly out into the street, sake bottle in his sleeve and made his way to the river shore.

He wasn't quite sure how to do this, not ever having heard a peep from the kami in his life. He had been tested by the Kitsu when he was young, as every young samurai is and the kami had remained silent. Still, he could talk to people, even if they didn't respond so how hard could letting the water kami know of his gratitude be.

He arrived at the shore, clapped twice as loudly as he could as the river was surely quite busy with whatever it is that rivers do in the morning. Perhaps greeting it with his own water would be appropriate. He inhaled, and keeping his voice low but forceful spoke. "Great Water Kami, I come here this morning to thank you and your brethren for the assistance you have given to my brothers of yellow and brown. I bring offerings, and hope that you will take them as some small measure of the gratitude that I have for your assistance."

That completed, he poured a glass of sake and then placed it into the water, letting the sake flow into the river. "I give thanks for assisting Kakita Kenji." He turned the glass over and withdrew it from the river.

He slowly and precisely poured the next glass, as if serving an honored guest. The next cup he again placed into the flow of the river. "I give thanks for helping my brother, Ikoma Nijiro." That done, he withdrew the cup and returned it to the shore.

A third time, he poured. Again slowly and precisely in gratitude to one who had done him a great service. That done, he placed it into the flow of the river and left the cup. "I give thanks, kami of water, for healing my brother, Ikoma Nijiro a second time."

All this done, Eichiro put the stopper back in the bottle and put it into his sleeve. He settled for a moment, not expecting an answer but perhaps enjoying the quiet of the moment.
