(Day 5, LM) Mandatory Event: Law

  • Air is precise, distant, and analytical. Air does not approach the matter directly, but with care, subtlety, and planning.
  • Earth is firm, grounded, and cautious. Earth prefers to act decisively, but only after due consideration.
  • Fire is passionate, inventive, and direct. Fire acts swiftly and with overwhelming force.
  • Water is flexible, responsive, and powerful. Water acts with confidence, flowing around the problem until it finds a solution.
  • Void is the element of no element, the mind of no mind. Void does not think, plan, or react. Void simply acts, moving in accordance with instinct and the natural path of the cosmos
.
Returning to the gallery where the oral trials are normally conducted, contestants are quizzed on a variety of matters of law, the Tao, and Bushidō. Once again, three judges are present, this time Akodo Eiko, Asako Himeya , and Bayushi Kiriko, and each contestant must answer a question from each judge. Because the law of Rokugan is intimately connected to the Celestial Order, this is as much about theology as law.

"What is a nation without laws, spirituality, or heavenly guidance? These three things are core to the daily life of Rokugan, set down from the Heavens themselves to guide and uplift us all, and to eventually break free from the wheel and take rest with our honored ancestors."

One by one the students are taken into the gallery and quizzed.

Judge Ring Hint:
Just before you enter the room, Asako Himeya brushes by you with an armful of scrolls. "I hope you spent time studying for this," she says. "being well studied keeps us all grounded after all"
Event Rules:
Participants: Unlimited (Mandatory Event)

Spells: Allowed, Each roll is considered a "Round". You cast the spell just before the event begins and may not cast during.
Kiho: Allowed, each roll is considered a "Round", Kiho must be activated at the start of the event, not during.
Kata: Not Allowed, as this is not a Combat.
Tattoos: Allowed, as each roll is considered a "Round" and you may use free actions at any time.

You may NOT target an opponent with any of these abilities before the event begins.

If you purposefully harm an opponent outside of the realm of the Sumai event (By winning the contested Jiujutsu roll) or the Weaponry event (By winning the contested Weapon roll) you loose 1.0 honor and 10 topaz points. If you do so a second time, you will be sent home in shame, removed from the tournament (and thus the game)

Also please remember that Spellcasting in Rokugan is a very spiritual thing, and to ask for the kami to do something for you is an incredibly rare thing and should not be done lightly.

Select a Ring to use during this event. Unless the roll specifically mentions a trait, you must use that ring for the entire event.

This event uses Lore: Law / Mental trait and Lore: Theology / Mental, at TN 20.

A student must pass all three rolls, and at least one of each Lore: Law and Lore: Theology roll.

Rewards:
-The student gains 1 Topaz Point per passed roll (Maximum 3 Points)
-Additionally, students may gain an additional +2 points per successful raise.
-Exceptional Success Raises may be utilized if you possess the skill you are rolling, each exceptional success (Up to your Void) granting +1 points
-If a student passes all 3 rolls, they are deemed to have sufficient knowledge, passing the event and are awarded 5 Topaz Points
-At the end of the event, Asako Himeya will reveal which Ring she felt was the most appropriate and you will gain +5 Topaz Points if you used it.

After players have conducted this event, they may attempt to meditate in this thread at the normal meditation TN.

Yasuki Ginkarasu did his best to answer things about the Law that he had little idea about. But he'd learned how to sound authoritative and mostly the questions were things like: It's not illegal to wear armor in another clan's lands, its just really rude. Or: Don't take things that don't belong to you.

He had a firmer grasp about how theology was involved, until at least, Asako-sensei figured that out and started drilling him with harder questions. He would've figured that leaving a shrine dirty wasn't allowed, but there was little but what curses the fortunes would give, it turned out, unless it was vandalism.

Huh.

Nobuko was nervous. The questions were on subjects she had spent time studying. But she hesitated in her approach. Uncertain if she should continue to allow herself to explore what the universe gave her or if she should rely on what she knew.

Her hesitation caused her to be caught off-guard when she was called up to answer their questions. She ceased up a bit and fell back onto what she knew. While she did fine on the topic of Law, her own, more recent, introspection about theology - Shinseism, Fortunism, and their relation to the other, often nameless, spirits - caused her to fumble with her answer to the first question on the topic. She felt she likely redeemed herself somewhat on the second one given, but it was not enough to pass.

She bowed and left, seeking out a quiet place to meditate and decide how she would continue to approach the tests.

Nesrin had some initial trouble focusing, wanting to ask half a dozen questions about the law pertaining to what had happened last night. If they'd been adults, would they have been held more responsible for what happened? Would the remaining ronin be executed, or merely fined and exiled? If it was possibly going to require fire for purifying the sake house, how were battlefields ever clean enough?

Missing the first question helped bring her wandering thoughts into focus though, and she managed to dig adequate answers out of her head for the remaining questions.

by Asako Saburo
Despite appreciating the guidance of his mentor and teacher, Asako Himeya, Saburo opted for a far more impassioned approach. The fire of his intellect was far greater than the grounded, methodical studies that he felt she had suggested and he demonstrated the raw potential of his intellect in the questions that were put before him. He was being grilled over the niceties of law far more than that of the details of theology, but it was apparent when she spoke to him that Himeya was not cutting him even the slightest bit of slack because he was her student, just as he would have preferred. He wanted to demonstrate that he had indeed gained much from her tutelage, beyond simply the void, over the last year.

He felt reasonably secure that he had done so when he left the demonstration. Then again, considering the fact that he had begun to angle his studies towards those of Himeya herself, he had better have a proper understanding of the interaction of the Tao, Bushido and Law.

by Bayushi Jiro
Ring: Air

It was rather convenient to his purposes that the Test of Law should be today. When summoned, he found himself seated before the judges and presented with questions as to relative weights of testimony, which he answered with erudition. The second question put was about the use of proxies in the delivering of testimony to authorities, wherein he made the case that known servants of a lord may, with certain restrictions and when properly authorized, serve as the mouthpieces of that lord in legal proceedings. Finally, when asked about the requirements incumbent on samurai from their role in the celestial order, Bayushi Jiro dwelt at length on the loyalty to one's lord, and through him to the Emperor, required of each samurai because of the Emperor's role as the representative of Tengoku on earth. Deviations and alternative loyalties that conflict with that supreme loyalty must be regarded as blasphemous, and addressed accordingly as affronts to both civil and moral law.

Theology he lucked out and one question was regarding the Moto gods that became fortunes but his knowledge of other parts of Rokugan cosmology wasn't as solid.

Eichiro is tired, but fatigue should not keep him from his duty. And his duty today is to pass these tests.

Unfortunately, the first question about the Law comes to him while he is in a slightly dazed state, so his answer of "Roasted Pickles" is not the penalty for a omission of assets during tax assessment.

He burns internally with what feels like shame, and he bears down and focuses for the rest of the test. He nails the question about who is responsible for issuing travel papers during a time of war, (it doesn't change) and is able to accurately name the fortunes ascribed to Rest and Attentiveness. He of course does not make the connection to his current predicament.

That done, he finds a quiet place to meditate, but instead falls asleep in the lotus, remaining upright but not regaining his center.

"The laws below reflect the laws above," intones Sasaiko, and she glances at the map Miya Wyn had given her. Emboldened by what she saw there, she steps forward to answer the judges' questions. The first of them is about the laws above, and Sasaiko gives an informed and eloquent discourse by way of answer.

The second two are about law, and they happen to be areas of law to which Sasaiko has paid particular attention. Her answers are direct and cite precedent--including touching on uneven and capricious scoring in contests--despite the lack of materials on hand. She is certain the judges are quite impressed with her as she bows and heads out to the next test.

This day Kaidan decided to use a fashionable black cloak with the embroiled elements on it. He sat with his little friend as he meditated trying to focus the power of the spirits in the cloak. He got the inspiration.

He already passed the threshold to graduate so he decided to risk it all. So he tried to elaborate but he seemed to have forgotten many details of the magistrate and the status of how things were supposed to go.

But he saved it with channeling his ancestral Asahina roots and remembering how the monks and the shugenja had talk about spiritual law and how the exchange of the spirits and the balance of things.
