  • Air is precise, distant, and analytical. Air does not approach the matter directly, but with care, subtlety, and planning.
  • Earth is firm, grounded, and cautious. Earth prefers to act decisively, but only after due consideration.
  • Fire is passionate, inventive, and direct. Fire acts swiftly and with overwhelming force.
  • Water is flexible, responsive, and powerful. Water acts with confidence, flowing around the problem until it finds a solution.
  • Void is the element of no element, the mind of no mind. Void does not think, plan, or react. Void simply acts, moving in accordance with instinct and the natural path of the cosmos

After the Sumai matches, students are asked to wait outside in the training grounds. After a short time, a small, petite, and white haired Doji walks onto the training field and addresses the students in a soft, calm voice.

"The backbone of Rokugan is the structure set down by Hantei-no-Kami and his siblings at the dawn of the Empire. In that, each Kami gathered followers and formed the Seven Great Clans. To identify one another, a series of mons were created. Those mons, and many more, are still in use today, and are how every citizen of the Empire knows how to address those they speak to, for we all wear them on our persons."

She points to one of the students and motions them to follow, having them enter a small gallery building at the Academy. Inside, there are numerous mons depicted in various forms. She leads the student to five separate mons, and asks them to identify them.

Judge Ring Hint:
"Consider, that the design of each heraldic emblem contains clues as to its origins that can be unlocked with careful analysis."
Event Rules:
Participants: Unlimited (Mandatory Event)

Spells: Allowed, Each roll is considered a "Round". You cast the spell just before the event begins and may not cast during.
Kiho: Allowed, each roll is considered a "Round", Kiho must be activated at the start of the event, not during.
Kata: Not Allowed, as this is not a Combat.
Tattoos: Allowed, as each roll is considered a "Round" and you may use free actions at any time.

You may NOT target an opponent with any of these abilities before the event begins.

If you purposefully harm an opponent outside of the realm of the Sumai event (By winning the contested Jiujutsu roll) or the Weaponry event (By winning the contested Weapon roll) you loose 1.0 honor and 10 topaz points. If you do so a second time, you will be sent home in shame, removed from the tournament (and thus the game)

Also please remember that Spellcasting in Rokugan is a very spiritual thing, and to ask for the kami to do something for you is an incredibly rare thing and should not be done lightly.

Select a Ring to use during this event. Unless the roll specifically mentions a trait, you must use that ring for the entire event.

This event uses Lore: Heraldy / Mental trait with the following TNs

10 - Everyday - The mon of a Great Clan
15 - Prominent - The mon of a Great Clan family
20 - Uncommon -The mon of a Minor Clan
25 - Rare - The mon of a vassal family serving a Great Clan
30 - Obscure - The mon/chop of an individual samurai

Rewards:
-The student gains 1 Topaz Point per passed roll (Maximum 5 Points)
-Additionally, students may gain an additional +2 points per successful raise, representing them going into greater detail after identifying the mon.
-Exceptional Success Raises may be utilized if you possess the skill you are rolling, each exceptional success (Up to your Void) granting +1 points
-If a student passes 4 out of 5 rolls, they are deemed to have sufficient knowledge, passing the event and are awarded 5 Topaz Points
-At the end of the event, Doji Murashige will reveal which Ring she felt was the most appropriate and you will gain +5 Topaz Points if you used it.

by Kuni Yotsuo
Yotsuo had to dig deep into his memory to recall everything that he could about the mon of the many groups in the empire. While he has had no formal training with such things, he has a deep intuition for the meanings behind imagery. Because of that he is able to recall a vast wealth of information and describe the meaning behind each. Though it was not surprising that someone untrained in such things was not able to properly identify an esoteric personal mon.

After he is done, he feels a great deal of mental stress, but he acquitted himself well and impressed the judges.

Mai sat down an analyzed very closely.

The first Mon was the Crane Mon. Simple enough. She even gave a few extra facts about that.

The second Mon was the Yogo Mon. Mai knew that one well. She had wanted to impress her friend Otoko, so she had learned what she could about the family. And while she wasn't able to impress her friend, she certainly impressed the judges.

The third was the Falcon Clan. Easy enough.

The Kaito. She got lucky she knew a few. Score one for happenstance.

The final one was Ikoma Anakazu. Her interest in the Lion served her well here.

Mirai that there was only so good she was expected to do given her station. Still, she remained calm and focused.

To the first; "Unicorn clan, in the gold and purple favored by the Moto."

To the second; "No mon... ah, sumimasen, Utaku. The empty uncolored circle rather than purple is favored for ceremony."

To the third; "The Tortoise, specifically the left facing favored on the sleeve."

To the fourth; "...Hanako of the Seppun, the family's premier magistrate and courtier."

The last required a bit more thought. "... Bayushi Tsuya, clan champion of the 6th century."

by Bayushi Jiro
Bayushi Jiro addressed himself to the table with the mons on it with his customary coolness. Having listened carefully to the words of the Doji, he found himself rather in his element.

Ring: Air

Coming first to a mon featuring a large Crab, he spoke at some length about Lord Hida's association with the animal as a representation of not only the defensive prowess of the clan, represented by their shells and pincers, but also the incredible way in which they survive by working closely together, defending not just themselves with their formidable weaponry, but other crabs as well.

He turned next to the mon of Mirumoto family, dwelling for some time on the dedication to both the samurai ideal and the teachings of their founder demonstrated by the dragon represented carrying a daisho.

Next came the turn of the humble Sparrow clan mon, with the Sparrow's long duty of toil and humility when compared to their resplendent Crane ancestors resting in their choosing the humble songbird and field-dweller as their symbol.

Then came his discussion of a vassal family of the Ide, discussing not only their mon, but how their origins and later accomplishments were housed in the symbolism contained therein. The mini-dissertation left the judge stunned.

Finally, he was shown a set of kanji that apparently formed the chop of a specific clan samurai. Here, for the first time, he faltered. He made the case that this was the chop of Shiba Norimaki, a general of the 8th century, because of the central position of the kami for 'winter,' which season Norimaki famously credited with his victories. In fact, it was the chop of his son, also called Norimaki, whose variation on his father's chop consisted of a single altered brushstroke. Frowning slightly to himself at his careless error, Jiro bowed deeply to the judge and departed the examination table.

by Otomo Nobuko
Nobuko was presented with the mons, confident in her ability to remember details about... well, some of them. Having been raised in the Imperial Courts, she was at least certain she would have little trouble recognizing those that were set before her.

The most common and 'everyday' mon presented was that of the Dragon Clan. She identified it easily before going into some detail about how it's final design came to be and what influenced the Dragon's positioning and the direction it faced as it appeared to be looking back over it's own shoulder. Perhaps more detail than they had expected, but it was simply such an interesting bit of trivia!

The prominent, but less common mon presented was that of the Yasuki family and she happily started talking about the details inherent in it's creation as the family left the Crane and joined the Crab. The switch from Crane to Carp but the focus on the beauty of both that still belied their original heritage. Doji-sensei didn't exactly look pleased with the eagerness that Nobuko dove into the topic, but the fact that a very artistic mon had been presented to an artist could not possibly be lost on her either. Really, what else could she have expected?

The third mon presented was that of a minor clan and Nobuko easily named it as the Tortoise, then started giving an anecdote about several of their members she had met in Otasan Uchi during the 3-5-7 festival that she was the dreaded seven years of age for and how they had shown her their mon and then shown her a toy turtle based off the mon that actually moved about on tiny little wheels! Oh it enchanted her so! And because of that, she knew what the pattern on the underside of the tortoise was supposed to be, though it rarely got depicted.

The fourth mon presented to her was not one she knew much about, so she was only able to identify it as that of the Ikeda Family, which served the Matsu.

The final mon was the personal chop of an Actor who made many appearances at the Imperial Court and was very pleased to tell the judge that she had met the woman once, several years ago, when visiting with her father for a few weeks. She had seemed very nice and honorable, though oddly enough, would only ever drink a very specific jasmine tea that she insisted on brewing herself. Though, being from the Scorpion clan, perhaps that wasn't so odd, really.

"Ugggh, this stuff." Zashi makes a dismissive sound, grimacing at the mon in front of him. There had been too much to cram for much to sink in, so he decided to study the art. Typically, the artists left detail that were clues, a particular achievement or family event kept in a tiny detail.

"Crane...Doji family" That was easy enough. He had been looking into joining that one.

The minor clan mon comes up and Zashi has to repress a chuckle. "Fox Clan. You can see the allusions to Kitsune Mori in the background there and there"

The last one was hardest, and Zashi takes a wild stab: "Yojimbo for...Lion Clan...one generation back?" The sensei nods and Zashi coughs. "Wait, that was right?"

Sasaiko enters her room and reviews the mons shown her. The first, strangely, is the Imperial mon, about which she discourses eloquently. The next is that of the Miya, about which she discourses even more eloquently. In a surprising turn, the third is her own Falcon mon; what she can say about it is limited, though. The fourth eludes her, but the fifth--oh, that she's seen before; it is the chop of the Ruby Champion herself.

So that seems to have been a pass.

Kaidan wasn't good at this kind of thing as he sometimes over analyzed things. He successfully identified the Crab mon. He successfully identified the Asahina mon. Then there was this obscure minor clan that looked like a cat but was it a fox, Kaidan was confused. Then an easy one Aotora vasal family. Then this weird mon of some weird champion who he doesn't really know.

Asahi sat down, feeling rested and ready after the sumai competition.

Presented with the first mon, he studied it for a few moments.

"Ah, the Phoenix mon. The threading looks like it is from the Enjaku province, I would assume Nikesake."

He studied the second one for a longer time, too long.

"Oh, a Crane mon. The silk is from the Anshin province, no? The stitching is immaculate, as expected. I-"

"Kitsuki-san."

"Hai, Doji-sama?"

"You must answere these quickly. You have failed this one."

Humbled, he answered the rest quickly.

"The Wasp, that is an older variant, however."

"The Aotora, of the Bayushi."

"Shinjo Haruko, no Shinjo Shono. Ah, it was Shinjo Yasumura."

The Dragon wasn't happy to have failed to identify two of the mons properly, but there would be more opportunities to impress the judges.

Thankfully Eichiro had studied heraldry last night with Kitsu Tsubasa. He was able to identify every mon, going into varying detail. The Clan mon was easiest, and Eichiro was able to go into detail as to it's origins and the meaning behind the animal choice.

The Family one was a little more difficult, but the Kakita mon was something he had seen earlier today. He was able to detail the year that it was first used.

For the Minor Clan mon, the Fox wasn't a clan he was too familiar with, but his sensei had warned that it always comes up in the competition.

For the last two, inspiration hit. They were two mons that Tsubasa had described to him the night before, and he was able to identify them as well as some details that Tsubasa had shared with him then. The very last one was the very last mon he had been quizzed on last night, the heavens blessed him with inspiration and he even identified the slight variation for 'Shiba Tsume, the younger not the elder.'

The heraldry test began well for Matsu Qiang. Anyone could’ve identified the Unicorn mon, of course, but the young Lion was able to recall that this particular version was the Ki-Rin mon used before the clan had left Rokugan for the Burning Sands.

Qiang had studied well for this part of the test, and he continued to identify one mon after another, ultimately even recognizing the personal seal of the assistant head attendant of the Imperial gardens in charge of water fountains, an elderly retainer who hadn’t been seen in court for years.

A morning full of fierce competition and rising tensions between our rival clans put Kichiro on edge. The sensei had directed a particular approach but he just needed this day to be over. With a relaxed attitude Kichiro strolls before the judges and casually recites the mon's identification in rapid fire succession.

"Mon of the unicorn. Military might focused on immense hordes and elite cavalry. Tactics include harassment with encircling archers and running through enemy formations with heavy cavalry breaking lines into chaos before a second charge. Advisable to reinforce strength in earth with an accompanying spear wall and avoid open terrain when engaging. Remember a true samurai's spirit is iron but the beast easily broken."

"The Shiba Family. Predominantly career yojimbos sworn to protect the phoenix's amassed body of shugenja. Formations often include heavy infantry encircling those who would envoke the kami to their aid. Threaten its heart and you may sway the shell's moments. Advisable to pick formation part with light infantry, increase their distance, before punching through. Honor dictates that capture of the shugenja is more favorable than death."

Kichiro continues on expressing his greater detail of martial war formations and tactics. Cold to speak of the calculations of the war machine but a study the lion take great pride in - All the while making sure to remain within proper etiquette and highlight the more honorable ways to find glory on the battlefield.

Much like the sumai competition earlier, he starts out strong and manages to get stronger briefly, before tapering off at the end and just utterly forgetting what that obscure servant of the Imperial Bureaucracy's office.
Still, he's done far better then he ever thought he'd do.

Ring: Fire

Aiichiro continued to be the smart boy, overall. He detailed in the greatest detail how the Phoenix mon was seen in the Shiba and Yogo mons, how the Moto had a different mon before, and how the Cat clan had details hidden in whitespace. He couldn't say much about it, but at least he was able to identify the personal mon of Matsu Gohei.

by Utaku Ichiro
Moto-sensei had never cared much for the finer points of courtly graces or politics so Ichiro's study of things such as mons had solely been on the side. Still for a bushi with little training he did surprisingly well. Ok, sure, there was the mix up between the Doji and the Asahina but, to be fair, 'bird holding something in its beak' was a pretty overdone motif. For families of artisans you really think they could be more creative....

by Asako Saburo
Asako Saburo was careful when he made his preparations. When called and brought into the back, he invoked his connection to the void, he made sure that he was not standing too close to anyone. While the radius of its impact would have little effect upon those who were not shugenja, he did not want to negatively impact them with the strangeness. The moment that the magic took hold, the veil separating the void weakened and he could feel the raw rush of its invigoration flowing into him. It was as exhilarating as it was almost addictive to feel this invigorating him.

Calling on the calculating and ethereal air within himself, he followed Doji Murashige into the gallery and looked upon each of the various mons that were presented to him in turn. "I believe that, from the stitching this first mon is a Crane Mon, the design being of the previous century," he said, tapping once at it before moving onto the great clan family's mon. "Ah, the Yogo Mon is a beautiful but strange one of the Scorpion, speaking to the tragedy of its shared heritage both from the Scorpion who wear their masks but also its ancient heritage among my own family, long ago at the dawn of the empire."

He moved to the next collection of family mons and nodded towards the minor clan. "The Falcon Clan bears the name Toritaka from the province that they have been long tasked to oversee," he said, having made it a point to actually study more about his future bride's family, and thus knowing a bit of their history. The Vassal gave him only a brief pause before nodding. "The Koritome of the Matsu, if I remember correctly."

The last, though, was a trip up. "Mirumoto Mashige-sama," I believe, though the Doji shook her head. It had apparently been his brother's personal chop. Very close, but not quite. Yet, nevertheless he had demonstrated sufficient caliber to be considered to have studied Heraldry sufficiently. The results were not entirely to his tastes, but it was a good start, considering that his knowledge of heraldry was little more than a hodge podge of things he'd picked up from court documents while studying law.

Careful analysis, Doji-sensei said.

Prash thought he understood what she meant... It was not his best suit, and neither war Heraldry as a whole... but he could try, and he would do his best.

He closed his eyes before presenting himself before the judge, joining his hands as if in meditation for a moment, then stepped forward.

The first Mon was easy - the Crab. But forcing his memory, he managed to say quite a bit more about the meaning and history of the Mon, which earned him a few more points.

Second one. The golden torii with a face of a lion was one he had seen before - the Ikoma. He didn't know much more about it than who it belonged to, but so far, so good.

Third one. A simple bird, in brownish colours. That was a Small Clan... That one who took care of a fertile plains they couldn't harvest in... The sparrow!

When it came to the Vassal family mom's, he took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. This was pushing his luck already, but well...

A stylized Unicorn facing left, with some particular details. This was a Unicorn Mon, no doubt about it... And it was a Shinjo Mon. So...vassals of the Shinjo. He thought about who they might be, and remembered some letters exchanged with Miya Wyn during the last year. Funnily enough, the Imperial has mentioned a map of the Shinjo lands, and specifically the lands of one of their vassals.... Whose Mon was like this.

"The... Bokutō family", he said after hesitating a bit, and Murashige announced he was correct. He smiled, looking around for the Imperial for a moment and nodding, as if thanking him in his thoughts.

Finally, the personal Mon. It was...a Crane Mon. Probably a Doji. Not from a Vassal family, he thought ... But he couldn't find any more clues that might help, and that was not enough.

Still, that was not a bad performance, he thought, smiling to himself as he stepped back and tried to see how his colleagues and friends were doing.
