The New Winds

After the Heraldry event is over and most others have already walked back either to their rooms or to have a walk outside, Prashant stays at the academy longer, waiting for the Doji sensei to finish her tasks so as not to bother her. He takes the time to concentrate for a moment as he waits, closing his eyes and clasping his hands together.

When she does become free, he approaches her slowly, a serene, but determined look on his face, and bows low when he comes closer to her. "Doji-sensei. Might you honour this humble one with a moment of your time?"

"Hello again, Iuchi-san. What can I help you with?"

"Hello again, Iuchi-san. What can I help you with?"

"Thank you for your attention, Doji-sensei", he says, still bowing. "I... think I may have misunderstood something about the scoring rules for the Heraldry test, which may have affected the score of a fellow competitor - or may have granted me an unfair advantage. I just wanted to make sure I haven't misunderstood the rules."

He raises slightly from the bow, but still keeps lower than her.

"I... apologise for asking this again. How many mons did we have to identify correctly to pass the test?"

"Each student was asked to identify 5 different mons, and their answers determined if we deemed their knowledge sufficient enough to pass."

He nods at her answer, still bowing. "Hai, Doji-sensei. Thank you. And... if this one may ask, was it four correct answers out of the five that were deemed sufficient knowledge? I ask because if I recall my test correctly that was how many Mon I identified correctly, and I believe my performance has been considered appropriate."

"It depended on their answers, Iuchi-san. I can say no more than that."

He nods again, head still low.

"Doji-sensei...Excuse this humble one's insistence, but I would like to understand how we're judged a bit better."

He seems to think for a moment, as if trying to remember something.

"As I am always interested in seeing how my colleagues fare, and hope for their success as much as my own... I remember all students who answered four or five mins correctly were approved in this test. Some of us had more to say about at least one of the Mon, of course - at least Kuni-san, Bayushi Jiro-san, Toritaka-san, Yasuki Ginkarasu-san, Asako-san, and my clansmate Utaku Ichiro-san, as well as myself. Shiba tōya-san and Yasuki Jin-san correctly identified four Mon, but no more than that, and their knowledge was also judged appropriate. But so did Hitomi-san."

He lifts his head slightly, still bowing.

"Was it ... something particular in the way he answered that cost him his points? If so, it might be something to keep in mind for the future tests... For me and my other colleagues. I trust Doji-sensei will understand my wish to understand this better"

She narrows her eyes at Prashant, and her voice grows cold.

"Yes, he did not answer satisfactory, Iuchi-san"

The Iuchi keeps bowed, but his eyes and voice are as determined as before, maybe more.

"I feel obliged to ask again, Doji-san. Was it something in particular in his answers that were not satisfactory? He did identify four Mon correctly, as you attested yourself. So did Shiba Tōya-san and Yasuki Jin-san. This humble one feels obliged to ask again .. how did their performance differ, so that this humble one may inform my colleagues so they may fully understand how the events work, avoid losing points due to mistakes and compete as fairly as possible?"

His voice is not particularly blaming or inquisitive - the friendly tone that is often in his words is still there, but coated with seriousness.

"The information he gave was not sufficient enough compared to others who identified mons correctly. I would advise you to not continue down this path of questioning, Iuchi-san, or it will be seen as a slight to our judgement."

The Unicorn raises his eyes for a moment, looking at the Doji's... he half expects he won't find anything with an accomplished courtier such as her, but... does he see any sign of discomfort with her own actions, or her own words?

Regardless of what he sees, he nods at her, bowing again. "My apologies, Doji-sensei. Doji-sensei's lessons and words have stayed with this humble one since our first meeting in Hirosaka, and this one would not question your judgment in matters of fairness. It was a matter of looking for clarity"

The Doji gives Prashant a bow.

"If that is all? I have much to do still."
