Mai remembered the Miya. Though it has been a while. She went over to him and bows. "Hello Miya-san. May I join you?"

"Of course, Mantis-san, I had been meaning to catch up with you, but it seems like we keep missing each other, how is your time in Tsuma?"

Haruki enters the room with 3 plates of absolutely stunning mushroom omelettes with fresh fruit on the side, all balanced on a simple tray, a pitcher of orange juice and 3 empty glasses accompany it (Miya-san has likely taken one earlier while wandering through the kitchen). "Ah, Mai-san, nice to see you, sorry I haven't gotten around to making time for conversation. It's been a really crazy week, hasn't it?"

"A little humbling as it seems many others have grown more than myself,' Mai gives a chuckle, if it disappointed her it was not much or she hid it well, "but good over all. How about yourself?"

Mai bows to the Phoenix. "Yeah. You can say that for sure. Good to see you, Isawa-sam."

"Hai Kaito-San good to see you as well, have you tried the Omlettes today the kitchen here has out done itself" He smiles at Mai, "I am very hopeful for the upcoming debate, it is very promising, I have not done well so far here in Tsuma so hope to redeem myself some in the finals."

"Why thank you, I guided them on how to do it. This is a favorite among the Kaito family, it really highlights the various mushrooms you find in the mountain forests. Feel free to grab a plate, Mai-san. It's such a shame there were so many bushi and so few courtiers, I mean you'll be done with your competitions before we're even halfway there."

"The Courtiers and Shugenja each have 3 rounds, the Bushi 4, so not quite half way, basically I think the Crane design it so everyone can be present to watch the Iajitsu finals. "

Mai takes a plate. "Thank you, Isawa-san." Her player is assuming that the three refusals is not expected in this situation.

"I always wondered why they didn't have a champion for each category. After all, how do you compare a courtier to a bushi? Or either to a shugenja?"

"Until recently the Crane only allowed Bushi champions"

"They are basing it off of the traditions of the Emerald Championship. When they were first forming the empire there were 2 separate positions for leadership, the Emerald Champion and his magistrates would enforce the laws of the Empire and the Jade Magistrates would protect it from insurrection. The jade magistrates were shugenja only, so that worked well in the past. However, that office was disbanded a long time ago once the Empire truly gained structure, I think."

(OOC, probably wrong, but I'll come back to it later once Vutall is online)

"Oh. I understand the history behind. I just think it might be better to consider us separately. As a Mantis, we know the power of the blade and the pen. And they should both be respected." Mai sighs. "I'm not complaining. Just saying how I would do it."

Hoping to move the subject away from questioning the ancestors, he finds another topic. "Speaking of how you would do things, assuming you were to win the tournament, how do you choose who will be your yoriki?"

Mai looks to the Miya. She clearly wasn't sure herself.

"The Topaz Champion doesn't have Yoriki, he is not a magistrate of any type, it is a purely honorary position, his or her only job is to be the face for young samurai to look up to during their year in the position. It comes with great prestige and social position, but no authority or position, and they definitely do not get to appoint deputies. '

"Huh, for some reason, I thought they typically became Emerald magistrates. Really takes the pressure off the shoulders if you think of it as just a trophy. "

"Topaz champion can write their own destiny, they could easily become an Emerald Yoriki, very few people ever go straight from Gempukku to Emerald Magistrate though, topaz champion though could at least get his foot in the door and start training, if he wanted to."

"Couldn't anyone get their foot in the door with their lord's permission? Just find a magistrate that is willing to take you under their wing, but I guess it really helps if you're really far from their usual line of work to get your name out there. However, with our work in Hirosaka and now here, do you think we all stand a chance of being selected to help an Emerald Magistrate?"

(Ooc, could I get a vibe check. I don't want to sound too argumentative, just bring up a point)

He smiles, "You probably could if you want to. What happened in Hirosaka has never happened before, the Ruby Champion's job is to train young members of the Hantei Family, and Elite Seppun body guards. He or She has never just choosen to take students from the clans before. Being part of that program could help you get such a position, as could a recommendation from your Lord, or winning the Topaz. Doing all three would garuntee it. Personally I am not looking for a job in Law Enforcement. I am much more interested in seeing the Empire on my own terms." He shrugs, "But if that is what you want, I am sure it could be arranged easily."
