Games Training (Mandatory Event)

The dojo has been set out with many comfortable pillows and a lot of various games stations. A very friendly, young, and energetic Lion stands at the head of the dojo.

"To end your time with us, I have the pleasure of teaching you all different methods of relaxation that we deem appropriate for samurai. Each game has its own benefits for those who study and master it. Kemari teaches courtiers to be quick and elegant on their feet. Sadane allows artisans to critique others without offering offense. Shogi teaches bushi the strategy needed to command. Go allows monks the same training but more abstract, important to leading the entirety of the nation in spiritual matters instead of war. Fortune and Winds reminds shugenja of the power of the elements. Finally, letters is a means to send messages in secret. I look forward to teaching you all, and hope you can find enjoyment in your final lesson!"
Sensei: Ikoma Ikehata

Special: You may make raises even if you do not possess the skill, as well as benefit from the Exceptional Success rule without the skill.
Special: Raises are +2 to the TN

Each student must complete three rolls at TN 6, using Intelligence, Willpower, and Perception.
They may only roll the skill their school tag matches:
Games: Kemari (Courtier Only)
Games: Sadane (Artisan Only)
Games: Shogi (Bushi Only)
Games: Go (Monk Only)
Games: Fortune and Winds (Shugenja Only)
Games: Letters (Shinobi Only)

Special Rule for school tagged things:
Convincing a Sensei you belong in a different group for instruction:

There are some students (Shinobi in particular) who may believe that an event would be required for them to know what is being taught despite not being the proper school tag to participate.

In this case, a student may attempt to persuade, or convince, the sensei running the event that you should participate. In order to do so, a student make first make a post in the event and attempt a Courtier (Manipulation) / Awareness roll at a TN of 8. Shinobi characters may add their ranks in Acting to this roll. If they succeed, they are able to participate in the event. On a failure, the sensei reprimands them for their arrogance and they lose 1 dojo point and are forced to participate in the event their school tag allows for.

Rewards:
If a student passes all three of their rolls, they gain +1 to the Games skill
If a student passes all rolls with a raise on each, they gain +1 Willpower
If a student passes a roll and has two explosions (on one or multiple dice), you gain a finely crafted version of that game. This provides no mechanical benefit, but it worth what the games price is in Koku, after you convert zeni to bu. (10 zeni=1 bu) (Letters gives a calligraphy set, sadane a court fan)

By the time that he approached the Ikoma to request permission to attend the Shogi lesson, the other sensei had pretty much warned them that this would be coming. It was, at this point, almost an expectation, given that he had done alternate lessons for almost everything imaginable at this point. The discussion was short, and the result was as expected. But, given his performances in Battle and Tactics, there was at least a little interest in some in seeing how well he actually played Shogi, given that he never played in the last week and a half.

And, when the Shogi equivalent of a 1-Dan arrived, it was readily apparent that he had been misrepresented in his standings by his brother, and he should obviously be at least a 2-Dan. Spending so many times playing against a Gunso of the Pale Oak Castle and his brother apparently had had their effect. He was a half-way decent shogi player.

=================

Required Rolls:
Courtier/Awarenes: 36 - Success
Games-Shogi/Intelligence CR (TN 8): 30, Exceptional Success
Games-Shogi/Willpower, Void for 1k1 CR (TN 8): 29, Exceptional Success
Games-Shogi/Perception, Void for 1k1 CR (TN 8): 40, Exceptional Success

Net Results:
+1 Games-Shogi
+1 Willpower

(Nope, haha, he did not get the vintage Shogi set. One explosion and two 9s. Hahaha)

Mai made an impassioned plea to be allowed to play shogi. Seeing the honor behind her words, the sensei allowed her to play shogi.

From there, she showed what Akodo-sensei taught her. Her strategy was was impeccable in the first game. In the second game, she pushed forward, not surrendering to when it seemed like she had no hope to achieve victory. In the final game, she saw through her opponents defenses and ripped right through them to achieve a seemingly easy victory.

"I am a Friend of the Brotherhood, Sensei, and I recently competed in the local tournament. I would appreciate the chance to do so again," Sasaiko says, convincingly enough (Courtier 17), so she is allowed to sit at one of the Go tables. And she acquits herself well, better than at the tournament, in the event, though she obviously struggles to do so.

Still, it is a good showing, and one of which she feels rightly proud.

He had played Go before... once... about 2 years ago. His family and master were not big on games though. He had a barely passable understanding of the rules, but he seemed to do much better now than he had back then. Especially when the opponent was explaining the rules and point of the game in much finer detail. He quickly found his footing, so to speak, and showed an aptitude for the game and the patience it required.

Apparently Ichiro had a keener tactical mind than even he knew. The game of shogi came naturally to him and he easily triumphed in his training matches - often with unexpected gambits for one not previously versed in the game.

Bayushi Jiro was not interested in getting sweaty before the closing ceremonies, so he had a quiet word with Ikoma Ikehata about the paramount important of the Game of Letters, which was a supreme art-form, mingling the glories of Calligraphy, Poetry, Origami, and, sometimes, Ikebana. He wished to demonstrate his prowess there.

Courtier/Awareness to switch tags=29

And then he did.

Games:Letters/Intelligence=25 Exceptional success-1 raise.

Dao sat down to play, and pulled out his own go set, at which the Ikoma smiled. Until he saw the boy's set only had four stones.

The young Dragon deserved better, the Lion thought and after he showed sufficient skill at the game himself, the sensei gifted him a 5th stone for his set to encourage the child to continue to play.

Sadane was something she had trained in for a long time and she went into the competition with confidence. Perhaps a little too much confidence as she almost didn't find a new flaw to critique near the end of her conversation but managed to just edge a new one in. It wasn't the finest of critiques, but it worked.

Ginkarasu asked the Ikoma-sensei a question, facing the Lion with every bit of his disturbing visage.

"Do you believe it more likely that I will need to understand when people are subtly insulting me, or how to play shogi?"

The Ikoma raised an eyebrow and waved the Yasuki on to the Sadane group.

Happily, Ginkarasu took all of Nobuko's lessons to heart, as they brought in a bunch of ikebana for him to talk about.

He still didn't like insulting the work someone had obviously put effort into. But it was the point of the game!

Sanzo, surprisingly, didn't really play many games; he usually painted or practiced kata to relax. So, he decided to try out shogi. It seemed pretty popular, and even his cousin was trying it out. And besides, this was known as the bushi's game, right? Maybe it would help with his understanding of tactics as well?

Games were not Ichiro's thing, especially not these kinds of games that were just sitting and thinking. Ichiro woukd much rather be practicing or riding horses or any number of things. However he had learned that things here happen for a reason even if it seems silly.

Ichiro went into the game concentrating and focused, his strategy was solid and he saw it through to the end. He missed a few things but not enough to ruin his game.

Kai actually looked like they were enjoying themselves as they learned the intricacies of Go. Oh, sure, they had seen other Kaito play it back home - there was even that one go house with the outdoor tables and oversized stones that players were obliged to place on the game surface with long, spadelike implements.

Much like the experience with meditation, there was so much more depth to this simple grid and collection of white and black stones. It was intriguing to Kai.

"Sensei, I was hoping to try Sadane. I have been told that I am rather infuriating, and I hear that is a very transferable skillset!"

Ikoma-sensei looked amused at the idea of a flightly, airheaded shugenja joining in with the courtiers, students trained in the subtle arts of reading the court and permits Zashi to try, likely thinking that he will be torn apart verbally.

Zashi smiles as he joins in the group. "Ooooh, I loved that kimono when I first saw the style...it made its debut what, three centuries ago? You are so bold to make such a choice. Don't worry, it does a great job taking attention away from your hair."

The comments are bitter, with Zashi criticizing every physical, mental, stylistic, anacronistic and social error with objects, all of which appear to be insightfully accurate. It's almost as if Zashi had gone for centuries, unable to tell a complete untruth and instead had to creatively word things~
