Revenge

The Governor's inaction had put all the children in danger. Under normal circumstances, that would have seriously irked Bayushi Jiro. The fact that a friend of his had been seriously injured in the process meant that the Governor's goose was cooked. Signalling his brother with a glance down a side hallway, Jiro launched the last of their grand adventures--this time not so much to secure their ammunition to guarantee their clan would recognize them as adults, but rather to fulfill the most solemn duty a samurai could perform--the duty of revenge.

"Kaidan-san, let's go," he murmured.

As they planned their great adventure Kaidan followed his brother out. The Bayuahi twins found good hiding places. Kaidan was a bit tired from the happenings of the day so his being ghost ability suffered a bit.

Smiling wolfishly at Kaidan, Jiro repaired to the costume closet and fixed himself up as a peasant...extremely convincingly...and stole out of the dojo in the dark.

Kaidan yawned again and prepared his costume. Even when he was sleepy Kaidan could fix up a costume pretty well. He followed Jiro.

And so, together, they picked their way toward the Governor's residence, where hopefully evidence of corruption could be found...or planted. For in Jiro's back pocket rested a pair of letters to the Governor that rather implicated him in some trouble. Trouble would be found at the Governor's residence eventually, even if Jiro had to stash it under his bed himself.

Kaidan followed Jiro to the mayor's state where he carefully checked the surroundings for guards or other potential on lookers.

The estate has many guards some stationary, some roaming. There are joyful noises escaping the mansion as if some gathering is taking place.
The Governor’s Estate
Central to the Governor’s Quarter, the governor’s estate is a sprawl of buildings enclosed in a walled compound on the highest piece of ground in Hirosaka. The largest and most central of the buildings—the four-story governor’s yashiki, or mansion—offers a commanding view of the town and its surroundings. The yashiki is one of the very few buildings in Hirosaka constructed largely of stone; only its upper two floors are predominantly wood. In times of strife, the governor’s estate, and particularly the yashiki, are intended to function like the inner fortifications of a castle, providing a final place of refuge and defense should the rest of the town fall. In practice, however, the wall surrounding the estate would offer little protection against a determined foe. Rather, it is mainly intended to keep out unwanted intruders and to clearly demarcate the estate’s borders. The stone bulk of the yashiki is more formidable and likely could hold off any attacking force not prepared to lay siege for a long time. However, although it is one of the largest buildings in the town, the yashiki can comfortably house no more than a few dozen people, with room for perhaps one hundred in a crisis.

In any case, defense is only a secondary role for the yashiki. It is primarily the governor’s home, containing apartments for them and their family. It also houses the governor’s most senior retainers. Much of the main floor is taken up by a large audience chamber, where the governor holds court (generally only when important samurai are in attendance; otherwise, the municipal court is used). The governor also greets visitors and hosts social gatherings and formal dinners there. To that end, the yashiki is relatively ornate and luxurious; in fact, appearance generally trumps utility and defense.

The remaining buildings in the compound consist of storehouses, servants’ quarters, a small barracks for the governor’s personal guard, and stables. For the use of important visitors, there is a well-appointed guesthouse, separated from the yashiki by a small but sumptuous garden that also encloses a bathhouse and a chashitsu, or teahouse.

Entry into the governor’s estate is strictly controlled. Even when the governor’s court is in session, only those with legitimate business are admitted. The governor’s personal guard, a small but well-equipped and highly trained cadre of samurai and trusted ashigaru auxiliaries, staff the two gates to the estate at all times and conducts regular patrols. The overall operation of the estate is overseen by the governor’s chamberlain, who has an office and apartments in the yashiki.

Momentarily rocked back on his heels by the presence of so many crack troops and elite patrols of Top Men, Bayushi Jiro held back to assess security for weaknesses. If they couldn't get in, they might need an alternate way of striking at this problematic official.

As there seems to be a gathering of some sort going on, perhaps a disguise as a servant or guest could work. The other viable route would be to scale the northern wall and then climb the two storied stone portion of the mansion, entering on an upper level.

Jiro looked down at his peasant garb, then looked over at his brother. "So...this could work. We just need to be ready to bluff or run our way out if things get sticky."

As they approach the guards both go alert and actively watch them. They make no move to stop them however and the two disguises seem to work.

As they enter the mansion, they are greeted by a large room used either for court or gathering, the later its purpose today

Various samurai are all in their finery, conversations pleasant and joyful. At the front, the Governor sits engaged in conversation with an older Crane with long grey hair.

Jiro peered up at the dais for a moment. Perhaps this Crane had visited Kyuden Bayushi? He looked familiar...Lore: Heraldry/Intelligence=28. In the meantime, though, he kept his head down and listened, trying to overhear any snatches of conversation that might seem pertinent. He knew they couldn't remain in the main chamber for very long. The good stuff was most certainly elsewhere, in an office or a private room.

Kaidan to not raise much suspicions decided to move toward the kitchen where most servants and eta might be bringing the food from. He tried to keep a low key but kept an ear out for any interesting bits of information.

The servants are all relatively silent, the only conversations going on is that related to the services they are providing that evening. Discussion of meal or drink requests and the like.

The first floor is almost entirely that for court with a side space for more private affairs, but no administrative offices. It seems that those are on a different floor, though there are samurai, Seppun, guards at the doorway leading to the stairs

Kaidan on the other hand kept his MO as a servant who was moving food into the main hall. He continued to move around trying to not call attention to himself. He slowly moved to keep an eye on the governor. If he was to move Kaidan would shadow the governor. Also he would keep an ear on the conversation.
