It seemed to Matsu Qiang that witchcraft was not truly the concern of a Lion hero, but Asako-sensei had put it on the class schedule, so the young Lion dutifully studied this strange and forbidden knowledge. The practice of maho sounded distasteful to him, but Qiang picked up enough of the class material that he should be able to recognize it in the future.

"So...strange and forbidden lore, huh?" Zashi finally perks up in lessons. The sensei seems almost at the urge of weeping as Zashi suddenly pays rapt attention to lessons, actively engaging, asking questions and taking copious notes.

Seem that darkness called this boy. He understood the nature of maho and how to identify this foul magic. for some odd reason had the will to resist its call.

Nesrin frowned all the way through these dark lessons. As they learned about the tempting and insidious nature of Maho and the kansen though, she granted that it was better to know than to succumb to such darkness by accident, which seemed easy enough to do.

The Iuchi are taught to always pay attention to, even respect, a variety of different magical traditions - so at first, the idea that a magical practice is so utterly dark and corrupted that it is akin to 'selling one's soul' sounds somewhat alien to him....

But Asako-sensei's words are convincing, and, during the lesson, the understanding of why Maho is so dangerous and wrong dawns on him and finds its way to his heart.

Noticing the signs of Maho takes some effort for him, but he manages to do it well enough. The second part of the lesson, then, is what really leads him to understand exactly how dark and dangerous are the forces with which this type of magic is dealing - as he gains comprehension of the effects of succumbing to the calling of the kansen, the natural curiosity of the Iuchi quickly gives way to the same seriousness the Asako has kept for the whole class.

Finding the will to actually enact justice against a person who has fallen to these evil practices, finally, is... tricky. It is clear to him now that it is a foul practice. It is clear that it must not be tolerated, as it leads the... Taint to spread, and someone who has dabbled in this has had their souls corrupted already - and by their own choice.

But... in some circumstances, people might feel they had no choice.

He feels paralyzed for some time, pondering that, his eyes closed.

When his eyes open, they are resolute. It did not matter the circumstances... it had to be done.

He then finally does as instructed - with extra determination after his reflection.

Kai took the lessons with utmost seriousness. Far be it for them to discount the truth underpinning the stories and legends of the threat far to the south of Rokugan: Kai's stock in trade were stories and folktales, after all.
