Towards the end, Mai sees a final opportunity. It's gamble, but it's also her only chance barring a huge mistake on Eiko's part which is unlikely. She goes for it.

Unfortunately, the gambit fails, but the old generals demeanor about the game seems to be much more invested and enthused than before.
