Daily Combat Training (Mandatory Event)

Daily Combat Training

After warming up with the morning Kata, your Sensei pair you off with a trained Imperial ashigaru for combat training. They walk about the parade grounds, observing each fighting pair and taking notes, rarely commenting on anyone's form, but instead allowing each of you to show what you have learned over the past years at your own dojo as well as anything you may have picked up from your time here with them.
This is a repeatable event, and will happen over multiple days. Each day, you must select a Ring to use, at which point, you may not use that ring again for this event. Players should make a note in their Personal Forum with a topic called "Daily Combat Training " and note which days they used each ring.

Only characters with the Bushi, Monk, or Shinobi school tags may enter this event

In order to complete the training, you must do the following:

Select a ring to use (Not including Void), not using the same ring you have already selected before for this event.

Then, make a Meditation/Void check at TN6. If you succeed, you gain that ring as a bonus to your rolls for this event.

You may only be in a stance for the duration of this thread that corresponds to the ring you chose. They are as follows:

Air: Defense
Earth: Full Defense
Fire: Attack
Water: Full Attack

Your opponent will select the opposite stance of you, meaning

Attack will be met with Defense
Full Attack will be met with Full Defense
Defense will be met with Attack
Full Defense will be met with Full Attack

You will conduct combat over the course of 6 rounds. You will use the Physical trait of the ring you selected for all Attack and Defense rolls. Damage uses Strength, regardless of what Ring you selected. No maneuvers are allowed and you are always within 5ft of your opponent. You may not grapple, and you may not move out of combat. At the End of a round, you may bow to your opponent to end your event progress. If you are ever Down or worse, your opponent immediately ends the event and you claim your rewards.

Your opponent has an initiative of 2k1, a TN of 7 in defense, and 5+2k1 divided by 2 in full defense, an attack of 4k1 in attack, 6k2 in full attack, and a damage of 2k1. They will always keep the lowest damage dice. Their wound block is as follows:
0-10: Healthy
11-14: +3
15-18 +5
18-22: +10
23-26: +15
27-30 +20
31-34: Down
35-38: Out
39: Dead.

You will face a fresh opponent each event, starting with no wounds.

You are allowed to select any weapon you choose, but they are either wooden or dulled, and thus have a damage of 0k1. When rolling damage, you may select the lowest dice. If you bring your opponent to Down or worse, you will be docked 5 Dojo points, as well as suffer an honor loss equal to a Minor Breach of Etiquette. Additionally, you will lose 0.1 glory. If you have no glory, you will instead gain this as infamy.

Characters who have the following Disadvantages MUST select their highest damage dice: Brash, Cursed by the Realm: Toshigoku

Offensive Rewards:
  • -For every strike you land, you gain +1 Dojo Point.
  • -If you land three strikes with the same weapon, you permanently gain +1 in the weapon skill you used. You may only gain this reward once per weapon skill.
  • -If you manage to land three strikes with wound penalties, you gain the Strength of the Earth advantage. (Note: You will not have wound penalties unless you go into the event with them)
  • -You may chose to switch to a different weapon at the start of each round, excluding any bows. If you are able to land a strike with three different weapon skills, you gain the Crab Hands advantage.
  • -If you ever deal 15 or more damage from an Unarmed attack, you gain the Hands of Stone Advantage
  • -If you have an attack roll explode twice, you gain the Great Potential advantage for that skill.
Defensive Rewards:
  • -For every strike you defend (your opponent misses you), you gain +1 Dojo Point.
  • -If you defend against three strikes, you permanently gain +1 Defense. You may only gain this reward once.
Other Rewards:
  • -If your initiative is 10 points or more higher than your opponent, you gain the Quick advantage. Void used to increase your initiative does not count for this.
  • -At the end of the event (either after 6 rounds, or whenever you bow to your opponent to end it early), if you are not at the Down or Out wound rank, you gain a permanent +1 to the Mental and Physical Traits associated with the ring you selected. You may only gain this reward once per Trait.
Special: On the final iteration of this event, if you have any combination of passing 3 rolls or having your opponent miss on three attacks in 3 of the 4 events (So either you passed at least 3 rolls in both your offense and had your opponent miss you 3 times in 1 defense, or passed at least 3 rolls in one offence and had your opponent miss you 3 times in both your defense, you gain the Bishamon's Blessing Advantage

by Kaito Haruki
Haruki knows he needs to be a pillar of strength for his clan, and to do that he would need to take the most difficult hits he can. So he specifically asks for the guy with the shaggy brown hair and the dark eyes. The very one who almost dropped his friend and that Mantis boy, the one who landed every hit he made, and the one who may or may not be a samurai in disguise. Regardless, he was going to not only walk away from this training excerise, but with no visible injuries to speak of. He braces himself for the first hit, but it misses. Looks like he was a little too overconfident coming into this event! Better not take it lightly and get a better stance before the next one. Next attack didn't even come close, maybe he really was just lucky before? With his newfound knowledge of how dodging works, Haruki is able to just keep his current tempo and dodge most of the attacks. Only one attack hit, and it only grazed his shoulder. Hopefully his school standings remain the same, it would be a shame if he worked so hard to get to the top of the class only for it to slip out of his grasp, like trying to get a fistful of sand.

Little did he know, his mind was playing tricks on him. So deep was his desire for being near the top, he didn't realize ,until the end of his spar, that the shaggy hair, dark eyed guy that Haruki was given, was that legendary ashigaru's brother. Then Haruki turns around and sees Aiichiro with obvious injuries again; at least he's walking fine this time.

by Utaku Ichiro
Ichiro bows once more to his uke and immediately strikes faster than the ashigaru can follow his bokken rapping the man hard in the shoulder. The uke, already wincing, rolls with the next blow though the third takes him, slightly softer, in the leg.

Ichiro pauses for a moment to take up a mock yari - thinking it is best to test himself with multiple weapons. Unfortunately, especially for the uke, it seemed his lack of familiarity with the weapon only made it more dangerous. A single thrust struck deep and, even with the blunted end, likely bruised something internally. It was only fate that kept the ashigaru on his feet.

Noting how unsteady said footing was, and knowing the shame if he did true lasting damage to his opponent, Ichiro reluctantly cuts the training short with a bow to his partner... and a recommendation that he seek a healer.

by Matsu Qiang
After a few moments meditation, the young Matsu sprang up in a defensive posture and fended off the ashigaru’s first few attacks. But after Qiang ducked in the same direction three times in a row, his opponent picked up on the pattern and landed two sharp raps on the Lion’s right arm.

“Huh,” Qiang said, rubbing his arm. “I’ll have to think about that. Thank you for the lesson.” He bowed.

by Yasuki Ginkarasu
Everyone had heard what happened during this training to the Mantis, so Yasuki Ginkarasu came to this bit of training more focused on dodging blows then meditating calmly. It was his old friend Ton from the Air training. Bowing a bit, Ginkarasu sighed, "I'm sorry Ton-san, I don't have any more mochi to give away. But still, come at me with everything you got, I want to become the best yojimbo I can!"

Ton bowed to the young soon to be samurai and smiled. "With your permission then!" And raised his blunted yari.

Ginkarasu started out quick as usual, but Ton had been learning the Yasuki's footwork and clipped him right in the ear. Ginkarasu grinned. That could've been worse!

"Good one! Maybe they'll put you in charge of a squad in the legion!" He calls out to him, refocusing his efforts to stay far away from the angry spear. Those efforts paid off, as it never came that close again!

by Moto Ichiro
Ichiro arrived for combat training feeling one hundred percent this time. After some light stretching the Unicorn boy felt like practicing his juijutsu and went at the Ashigaru landing light punches and kicks here and there. He showed a lot of restraint and control but the combined blows eventually took their toll on the poor man who slowed just a little too much and couldn't intercept the devastating kick Ichiro landed to his ribs where the boy felt several of the man's ribs crack under the blow and Ichiro gave him a bow, the man attempted to bow back but wasn't able to.

Ichiro felt very little pity for the battered man and deadpan told him he should go see Asako-sensei for healing.

by Kakita Kenji
Kenji went to the combat training with great expectations of himself. After he swore to Saburo yesterday to be a strong opponent in the Topaz Championship, he had to prove himself today.

First he went into the fight with a bokken. Kenji's preferred weapon and rightly so. Every blow he made with the bokken was a work of art in itself, every movement the perfection of a kata.

After Kenji was satisfied with his performance, he went on to fight with his body and to implement the teachings of Hida-Sensei. This was not as graceful as his handling of the bokken, but still impressive enough, considering that only a few days ago he was hardly able to throw an opponent out of the ring.

After a few good punches and kicks Kenji was quite satisfied with his performance and bowed to the Ashigaru.

Kenji had given a good testimony of his skills and all this without hurting the Ashigaru, they had chosen as his opponent, too much.

Kokyou comes to defend the Imperial ashigaru's strikes once more. Being cocky as he is, the Mantis boy stays still for one round and gets a shinai right on top of his head. The lesson he learned the other day was finding a hard time to sink into his thick skull.

by Kaiu Aiichiro
Aiichiro looked to the ashigaru.
This was the one who almost crippled him down. This was the one who almost crippled Kokyou down. And now he would have to defend himself against this formidable, unreleting, foe.
He looked at his eyes and bowed.
"Defend yourself but not completely, leave your attention open enough as if you were protecting someone." Was the orders he received from the overlooking sensei.
Aiichiro did so, feeling himself not only concentrated on the task, but with at ease on it. His footwork was slightly faster than his opponent's and he managed to dodge the first blow... Which was a feint to the second! Was this even legal? Whilst he wondered, the Ashigaru hit the Kaiu one more time. Got it, clear your mind... No, learn how to do it without dropping defense. Akodo-sensei said that he needed to be able to split his focus at two things at once.
He did the remaining of the training pretty well, until the very last blow. The ashigaru there striked with stunning grace, samurai grace, whilst being kind this time with how lethal the blow was — a sort of "I could have beaten you badly, but it requires the same skill to be as gentle." Then, the ji-samurai bowed.
Aiichiro took a little time to process what happened before he bowed back.
"Good fight."
"Yours too, samurai-sama."
"But you did better. I could mistake your last round as if it was made by a samurai's hand."
The ashigaru unfocused his eyes for the slightest moment as if readjusting his crows feet, then bowed deeply. "I thank you for all those compliments, samurai-sama."

by Togashi Dao
Dao stepped up and laid out a few weapons beside his starting position. He allowed his opponent to inspect them before picking up a standard bokken and offering a bow falling smoothly from the motion into an aggressive stance.

Flying into the fray with great speed and precision, Dao unleashed a number of lightning quick sword blows, too fast for his opponent to follow, but dealing only featherlight taps to his chest.

Switching up to a pair of tonfa, he maneuvered in close, inside his opponent's weapon reach, and pummelled him to the midsection over and over until the sensei had seen enough.

by Utaku Nesrin
Nesrin watched the bouts going on for a moment, noting that the rather aggressive fellow was getting a lot of attention today. She frowned slightly, wondering if it amounted to bullying, but no...just chance it seemed. Her own partner showed no sign of caring who she was paired with, and bowed deeply as the Utaku entered her little zone of the dojo.

It was time to show what she could do going all out. So she chose one weapon she wasn't familiar with, but which might readily be available if she were in the kind of situation that required such ferocious attacks. Then the sword, her most familiar weapon. She nodded to her sparring partner, then flung herself forward, scooping up the little wooden 'knife' without even properly finding her center to move from. And it showed, as she missed by a hair's width, wobbling in her stance.

Dropping the tiny blade, she swept up the regular bokken, pausing long enough to find a proper stance to swing out of, and it showed, with each strike landing more surely. Confident that she'd found her rhythm, she set the blade down with the reverence it deserved, and picked up the tiny one again, this time finding a way through the ashigaru's defense.

And if she was attacked and didn't have a weapon? Using all she'd been learning, Nesrin spun into a fierce kick, that merely glanced against a shin. The followup punch wasn't much better. She needed to learn how to properly put some strength behind her blows.

After the final attack, she steps back, bows, and pads away to put her weapons away.

by Kakita Kazuko
Kazuko walked into combat training with a confidence that she would get out unscathed. A confidence that wavered as she saw who she was up against. It's the guy whose unofficial title she can't remember at the moment but he beat up Aiichiro and Kokyou and also badly needs a haircut! Okay, up close he wasn't as scary as Haruki made him out to be and she's definitely way better than Aiichiro and the jester pretending he's a pirate. She'll prove to them that he just got lucky. There's no way he could be that good, right?

"Your reputation precedes you. They say you're strong, but I bet you haven't faced against a Kakita yet, right?" Kazuko's struts up to him and smirks smugly, hands on her hips in a fashion that shows that she clearly thinks herself better than him.

The unnamed ashigaru ignores her taunts and stares back with a focus that Kazuko does not have. "Prepare yourself," he replies in a startling throaty voice as he takes an attacking stance.

Kazuko manages to fend off the first couple of blows but it's clear that the ashigaru is going easy on her, likely to gauge her abilities and tendencies. Despite being aware of this and managing to not get lulled into a false sense of security, the ashigaru is still shown to simply be superior as he goes almost all out. He methodically lands hits against her using his faster reflexes and with the sun to his back but thankfully shows some mercy by not being overly harsh with his hits. She bows to the ashigaru at the end, in awe of his skill and feeling a little foolish at her cockiness. She almost can't believe how caught off guard she was, being outclassed every step of the way.

As the ashigaru walks past her, Kazuko calls out after him, not wanting to remember her defeat by the hands of some nameless man. "Hey, um, ashigaru-san! What's your name?"

He stops for a moment, his shadow stretching forward across the dusty grounds. "I am Takeshi."

As he begins to walk away again, Kazuko deliberates whether it would make her weak to ask about his training and how to improve from someone she mocked. He doesn't seem like a man of many words to her so she doesn't even know if he would tell her, but before she makes up her mind, Takeshi is too far away for her to feel comfortable chasing after. With her defeat and improvement in mind, she leaves the training grounds in search of practice before wincing at her injuries. Improvement can come after healing. Something to distract her from her recent defeat would be nice too.

by Asako Sanzo
Sanzo once again shows up for combat training, though this time, he decides to working on his defensive capabilities. He decides not to even grab a weapon, wanting to specifically focus on his dodging. He manages to get out of the way of nearly all of the ashigaru's attacks! He gets hit just once. The blow isn't too bad, but it'll probably bruise a I title bit.

After the 6th round, Sanzo bows and thanks his training partner.
