Nesrin thought she would have preferred being soundly beaten at Go to reading the ancient treatise. But, as they read, she came to see it much like travel poetry, easy to remember phrases to help bring an entire lesson to mind when you needed it. Some of those regarding terrain features would stick in her mind, but she'd have to remember her opponents probably knew them too. The lessons were less clear on when and how to subvert expectations to avoid doing exactly what an enemy might expect...maybe that simply came with experience?

Prash knew one possible place he might be in the future was in an army, but his mind was much more at home reading Shinsei's lessons than it was with Akodo's harsh words.
But as the Akodo sensei recited, he found time and again some passages that he thought had considerable similarity to the Little Teacher's words. He had been the one who guided the Thunders to victory, after all, wasn't he? Enlightenment was not found 'only' in peace, as sometimes it was only through rightful battle that peace could be restored.
It was maybe not the sort of insight the Akodo sensei expected for the lesson, but it worked well enough to lead Prash to find appropriate strategies and readings of the situations proposed.

Tanshin was somewhat frustrated that his physical training was once again falling behind the more scholarly lessons.
He spent some time recalling the stories of past battles the Eiko-sama had relayed. This was different than personal combat, this was more akin to herding, or the flow of water.
He was able to realize that the force he was given was mobile, lightly armoured, with a large amount of archers.
The high ground would be important, as would being able to move from location to location on the battlefield.
During the scenario, he saw his opponent make a strong left-flank charge with heavy infantry. His troops there would not be able to withstand the attack, however, he saw the opportunity, and ordered his unit to fall back at their approach, and allowed his archers to fire from flank positions, causing the enemy to break ranks.
In hind sight, he realized that he had just replayed a battle that Eiko-sama himself had fought.

Kaidan was no strategist but he wondered how was a way to win a battle. He was aware of the field quite well. He knew a good strategy to work with but he failed in seeing the enemy tactic that Akodo sensei had posted to him.

It appeared that all of Dao's research and effort paid off. He deployed his troops correctly, used the terrain to make his opponent think that he had overcommitted to one side of the battle field, then punched through the weakened side with his reserves.
The sensei smiled when he saw the young Dragon had taken his previous advice to heart, before moving on to assess the next students work.

Grousing aside, Kai proved to have some facility moving around the little wooden blocks and figurines representing troops on a map.
Whether out of just-as-planned genius or their own ineffable luck, what should have been a disastrous over-extension of Kai's troops ended up opening an opportunity for Kai.

As Kitsune Setsuna nestled into a cushion and unfolded the large book that was a collection of excerpts from Leadership, he was not quite sure about himself. Battle; that was not a thing that the Fox Clan engaged in often. His father had fought a battle once upon a time before Setsuna was born, and so the Kitsune would try his best.
When he read the passages, three things of note stood out. He was very aware of the capability of his own army and what they could do. Their specialities and weaknesses and how to maximize their potential on the field. Secondly, he was decently versed in maneuvers such as Lord Ikoma's Gambit, or Flying Chariot, or Lady Shinjo's speed. But the last part he struggled with thoroughly, not able to properly analyze the opponent and shaking his head. Perhaps his awful eyesight had something to do with it, though likely not.
