While the students are cleaning the dojo, a servant woman comes in and watches them, waiting to see if any look her way. Those that do she motions over.

"Please, come with me, Samurai-sama"

She bows and then leads them to the kitchen. When they enter, they are met by a ronin woman.

"Hello, children. My name is Keina. I heard that there has been an awful lot of interesting events here in this dojo lately, talk of strange spirits, Tengu, and even shapeshifters. I've been looking for a crew to help me with something, and I think you are just the right people for this job."

She smiles and puts down an ancient looking scroll.

"Legend says there is an ancient ruin somewhere here in Hirosaka, though the legend says the entrance is small and fit only for those of your size to enter. I've narrowed down the possible entrance to four different locations we will need to search if you are with me. Don't worry about your studies here, I'll have you back before your bed time."

She smiles at the group and waits to hear an answer.

  • Setsuna had paused his sweeping and looked around. Was this a test of some kind? He mentally weighed the options of whether he should stay or should he go. If he go there might be trouble, but if he stayed it might be double. So come on and here we goooooo- the Kitsune finished sweeping his part of the dojo and was off.

At the meeting of Keina he would politely bow and listen to what she said. His ears pricked up a little bit. Strange spirits, tengu, shapeshifters? A small bead of sweat formed on his brow that he quickly wiped away with his sleeve. Haha what a ridiculous idea, shapeshifters being at the dojo. Surely there would never be a one among these fine upstanding samurai.

When she said not to worry about the studies he began to think that maybe, she was not actually a part of the school. His fists clenched tightly, nails making light crescent moon shapes into his palm. All instincts said to not follow this lady. But something told him that others might go along, and he couldn't let anything bad happen to them. The guilt would weigh on his mind too much.

He would step forward. "Please take care of us, Keina-san. I will help you find this ruin." And if anything went wrong-- it would not go wrong, he vowed. Luckily, he would have his traveling pack with some of his possessions on him. Ronyan had a nasty habit of digging in there and throwing everything around if she was left unattended with it.

Oh and he turned his head left and right and realized he was the only one that stepped forward so far. Oops.

by Kakita Kazuko
Having just completed her calligraphy lesson - quite successfully in her opinion - Kazuko is too enraptured in reliving the successes of her lesson to notice the servant at first, but a servant just standing there and watching them is far too odd to go unnoticed for any prolonged period of time. Is she getting some sort of sadistic pleasure by watching them clean while she just stands there? As the servant woman beckons, Kazuko hesitates. Would she get in trouble if she followed? Why would a servant woman even want them in the first place? Optimistic that she wouldn't get into much trouble even if something does happen, she carefully places aside her broom and follows the servant into the kitchen. Surely they wouldn't kick her out after her fantastic calligraphy, right? She notices that a few students have noticed and joined as well, some of which she has not formally met yet.

Immediately on edge at the sight of the ronin woman - Keina - waiting for them, Kazuko wonders if she can be trusted. A sentiment that seems echoed throughout the other students. Keina is a ronin. A ro-nin. Of course a ronin woman never seen before can't be trusted. What's this talk about Tengu and strange spirits anyway? Surely there can't be any here, for the sensei would have caught them already. Despite the... peculiarity of Keina, Kazuko is intrigued by the mention of the ancient ruin. If this legend is true, then this would be the perfect opportunity to prove herself to her father and potentially acquire treasure along the way. She can't let this opportunity go, even if it is a trap of some sort.

Seeing as how most of the other students are too afraid to speak up besides that Kitsune who seems far too eager, Kazuko voices the questions that they all seem to be thinking. She glares at the Kitsune for speaking for all of them. Admittedly, she's about to jump headlong into danger just like him, but at least she's trying to get more information about it first.

"Before we do anything for you, what's in it for us and how do we know you're trustworthy? For all we know, this could be an elaborate ploy to kidnap us."

He had survived an attack in the night while he slept. Surely this couldn't hold any greater risk.

He was samurai, after all, even if not past his gempukku. If there was a challenge he would overcome it and prove himself!

(Brash failed, I'm in!)

"Avast ye!" Shouts Kokyou, arriving from... nowhere. As if summoned by the Fortunes themselves to loom over the scroll. "Shiver me timbers. 'tis the map t' the hidden booty o' Hirosaka. Aye!"

Kenji saw Kazuko following a rather suspicious servant. It didn't take long until Kenji ran after them and collided with the other students.

This undertaking looked dangerous, it seemed to be against the rules and against the law.

His duty and his feelings led to a fight against each other. He could be expelled from the school, bring shame on himself and his clan and much worse, he would no longer have the moral high ground over Zashi.

But Kenji was young, stupid and a little bit in love, he would not let Kazuko go alone.

"Exploring an ancient ruin?" the new Lion boy said. "That sounds ... adventurous!"

He puffed his chest out, imagining himself as a famous, ruin-exploring hero.

"Good, now that we have enough of you, we can begin. First, to answer your question Kakita-san, you don't know anything about me other than that I am a ronin, and that I am here offering you a chance of the lifetime to find something of great historical significance. The legend on this scroll says that there was a Zokujin city once here, below the surface. All I can guarantee is that my words are true. Now, if there are no further questions, we can discuss the matter on the way to the first location the map points to. I have horses waiting for us all outside the walls, and a rope ready to be climbed. The guards will be patrolling soon, so we need to make haste before they discover it."

Ichiro perks up at the mention of horses. It was nearly a week since he last got to ride. Sure he doubted the ronin had any steeds of quality even by non-Unicorn standards but it was still a sensation he missed dearly.

That alone would be worth the risk.

"I'm in. Worst case we have to trounce a ronin and sneak back in." He offers a grin to Keina, "No offense, of course."

Part 1: Sneaking Out

Keina leads the students to a section of the wall hidden by the kitchen building, a rope dangling from it. She quickly scales up and over, motioning for the students to come quickly.

"The guard begins his patrol, make haste!"
All students must make an Athletics (Climbing) / Strength check at TN 6. Failure of this roll means the student takes 2k1 damage from losing their grip and falling. Additionally, if a student fails more than twice, they are spotted by the patrolling guard and are taken away to the sensei of the dojo, costing them 10 dojo points and preventing them from further participation in this event. A player who has not yet rolled may assist another player, adding their skill in Athletics to the assisted players roll.

Kokyou is a natural climber. He touches the rope and to honor the hour, is up the wall as fast as a monkey would do. Checking the other side for a clear landing, he descends.

Ichiro bypasses the rope, leaving it to others to help them all ascend as quickly as possible. Instead the Unicorn mimics the creature of the hour and quickly and silently scales the wall. Pausing at the top to reach down and help the next student finish their climb.

(Athletics/Strength TN 6 - 23 - Exception success)

Kenji had a bad feeling about leaving the dojo, although the wall was no obstacle, it felt harder to climb over it than to stay behind it.

Kazuko's instincts are screaming at her to not trust Keina and that ronins are NOT to be trusted. She ignores them. Following Keina to the rope, she attempts to climb it but the mental battle going on inside of her seems to be disconcerting enough to make her lose her grip right before she made it to the top and almost fall, were it not for the quick hand of Ichiro grabbing her and hauling her up.

"Thank you, Utaku-san. I am grateful for your help."

She would bow in thanks if she wasn't so afraid of being spotted by the patrols.

Well, there's no going back now. Only forward.

  • Setsuna went last on purpose, taking one last look around the grounds before clambering up and over the rope, easy as pie.

The ronin quickly brings up the rope and lays it down the other side of the wall, sliding down it to where she has 7 horses waiting. She mounts one and waits for all the students to follow suit.

"There are four potential locations we must investigate. The one we find that has evidence of ancient architecture will be the entrance to the underground tunnel leading into the city. One location is the courtyard behind the Dwindling Fortunes Gambling House, another is a carpenters shop in the market district, the third is a small guesthouse in the Temple of Shinsei, and the last is a storehouse in the heimen village just outside the city. I have no preference to which we visit first, but understand that each will have their own challenges to investigating them properly. Discuss among yourself and when a consensus is made, we shall go to the first location you choose. "
The students must pick a location to visit first and how they will approach the investigation, each location having different people they will need to interact with (Or avoid) to properly look for the ruins. The options are as follows:

First, players pick a location, second players pick an approach. Once one is picked, it will be removed from the next location choice

-Gambling House
-Temple
-Market
-Village

--Sneak (Stealth)
--Bribe (Temptation)
--Convince (Courtier)
--Threaten (Intimidate)

The location and method that has the most choices out of all 6 players will be selected.

  • Setsuna watches how the ronin does it, and then mounts the horse. It didn't seem like this part would be very stealthy, but hopefully everyone could find the treasure and come back in time. "I would be fine with the gambling house, market, or village," he spoke quietly to his fellow gang of treasure hunters. "Once there I could sneak or try convincing those there to give us access."
