Daily Art and Courtier Training

After the morning duties are completed, a small number of sensei ask those whose schools specialize in either the arts or courts to remain inside the dojo to conduct their morning training. They go over a number of different topics each day, usually involving a story of a court they had attended and ask the students what they think could have been done differently, or what was done correctly. Additionally, one or two sensei ask students of the arts to observe and attempt to copy them in their art, and correcting mistakes as they spot them.
This is a repeatable event, and will happen over multiple days. Each day, you must select a Ring to use, at which point, you may not use that ring again for this event. Players should make a note in their Personal Forum with a topic called "Daily Art and Courtier Training " and note which days they used each ring.

Characters with Seven Fortunes Blessing may only use their blessing for one roll per event.

Characters who have the following disadvantages have the following penalties:
Antisocial: Instead of suffering the dice penalty, instead increase your TNs by 1 or 2 respectively.

Only characters with the Artisan, Courtier, or Shinobi school tags may enter this event

In order to complete the training, you must do the following:

Select a ring to use (not including Void), not using the same ring you have already selected before for this event. You will use either its physical or mental traits for this event. (Artisans choose either a physical or Mental trait, based on what the artisan skill typically uses. Courtiers use only Mental traits)

Then, make a Meditation/Void check at TN6. If you succeed, you gain that ring as a bonus to your rolls for this event
Then, you must complete the following steps in order, selecting either Arts or Court:

Arts

Pick a skill: Acting, Artisan (any), Perform (Any)

Then you must make three rolls using that skill with the TN starting at 4, then 5, then ending at 6.

Courts

First you must make a Courtier roll at TN 4

Then a Sincerity roll at TN 5

Finally an Etiquette roll at TN 6

Rewards:

Arts
  • -For every roll you succeed, you gain +2 Dojo Points
  • -if you succeed all three rolls, you gain +1 to the skill used. You may only gain this reward once per skill.
  • -If you ever roll a 15 or higher on any skill, you gain the Great Potential advantage for that skill
  • -If you have a roll explode twice on a Perform skill that relies on your voice (such as Singing or Oratory), you gain the Voice Advantage
  • -If you have a roll explode twice on an Artisan skill, you gain the Soul of Artistry advantage
  • -If you have a roll explode twice on a Perform skill, you gain the Sensation advantage
  • -At the end of the event, you gain a permanent +1 to the Mental and Physical Traits associated with the ring you selected. You may only gain this reward once per Trait.
Special: On the final iteration of this event, If you pass at all of your Art rolls in at least 3 of the 4 events, you gain the Touch of the Spirit Realms: Yomi Advantage. You MUST pick a school skill that matches one of the passed skills used during the 4 events

  • -For every roll you succeed, you gain +2 Dojo Points
  • -If you succeed all three rolls, you gain +1 to your choice of either Coutier, Sincerity, or Etiquette. You may only gain this reward once per skill

It was with an apologetic bow that Asako Saburo spoke with Asako Himeya of his concerns about the development of his Earth, how years of building and working through both physical and spiritual training had shown minimal results and how he seemed ill prepared for matters of court that any priest of the kami should be expected to address at least occasionally, his lack of patience in many matters. It was not an easy matter to convince the sensei, but in the end... she had agreed. It was well known that he could conjure basic spirits. This might be worth the effort.

So it was that, as thunder rolled outside, the first among the students to arrive at the Courtier's training was ... not an expected young man. Asako Saburo, still as pale, drawn and unhealthy looking as ever. He settled into position, but his meditative efforts were not as ... effective in the past. He could practically hear the shrieking in his mind of the folly of approaching all of this.

But when called upon to demonstrate his approach to resisting the manipulations and coersion of another, he seemed to show good resolve. His on never slipped and he remained sincere in the presentations that he made. His poise, too, he put his all into, and was fortunate that he had. He maintained and kept his composure throughout. None of the judges were stunned, but likewise they were surprised that he had done this well at all. Perhaps this hadn't been a mistake.

Convincing Asako Himeko and the Courtiers of Alternate Training (TN 8): 24 - Success

Nobuko arrived and after they had gone through a similar question and answer session as they had on the second day, she chose to play the koto instead of creating more origami. The dojo had a preference for everyone showing a wide range of skills and talents, so going with a different art she was familiar with seemed appropriate.

Jiro arrived at the training area, this time dedicating himself to seeing as Kitsuki-sensei had suggested. He proved himself a skilled practitioner of his future duties, especially in Etiquette, where again he proved himself equal to most adult samurai. Somewhat pleased with the outcome, Jiro bowed deeply to his sensei and took his leave.

Wyn enters the court training, ready to face the day. He works through the standard meditation to prepare himself in alignment to his Water ring, but can not seem to get in tune with the element. Still as he works through the various court questions of the day, studying the actions of the courtiers in question, he still does well, if not exemplary in any particular area.

Another day, another amazing feat of art from the little Doji! Today, she would be making netsuki for each of the judges!

She got to work on the gold, humming along happily as she did so. She didn't feel concerned at all, knowing her work would be good enough. The confidence shined through as she presented three lovely netsukis, each in the shape of an animal. The first one was a Crane, the second was a Fox and the third was an Ape.

She smiled to herself, remembering that weird night in Chikushudo, leaving the judged confused as to why she made an ape of all things...still, it was easily good enough for a passing grade!

Kaidan arrive at the classroom yawning. He had had better nights. Still he cannot believe that they met an Kenku but then weird things seem to be happening in this place.

The young bushi took a pillow book and memorize its lines. He started to recite them with passion and fire.

"Tsuki... The moon is shining and I wonder where she is. I can hear her whispering just in my ear... Why did she had to go? My mistake was leaving her with that man... But regret is a sin... a sin so heavy but I have a duty and must go on."

by Asahina Mari
This was Mari's element, at least mostly. She was perhaps a bit more suited for the classes where teachers asked questions about obscure lore and facts, but there was something pleasantly familiar about being in a court setting, it had the air of... home. She took a moment to focus herself as it was early in the day, greeting those others that entered cheerfully. All in all, it was a pretty straightforward and uneventful training, but that certainly wasn't a bad thing.

by Soshi Shiso
As usual, distracted Shiso was distracted. But there was a method to this madness.

Dragon 4. Void/Meditation.: 1d10 1

"I'd like to tell you a story about a certain bad advice. It clearly indicates you shouldn't be listening to random advice coming from people you don't know if you can trust. Like a Scorpion. You can't trust me of course." Shiso started his reverse psychology exercise. "So one Lion gunso wanted to charge uphill against bandit archers. A Scorpion advised him not to do so for the odds were not in the Lion's favour. But the Lion charged anyway, heeding not the mischievous advice that sounded sensible, and carried the day! The bandits were soundly defeated for they didn't bet on the Lion to charge them. It's obvious thus that the Lion should keep doing all the unreasonable things they want for it is honour that guides them, not some dubious calculations of chances. It should be every Lion's call: Never tell me the odds!"

Dragon 4. Air. Courtier (Manipulation). TN 4.: 4d10ro1o10k2 30

[+2 Points, +Benten's Blessing, +Great Potential (Courtier), a FR]

And it was all so very true!

Dragon 4. Air. Sincerity (Deceit). TN 5.: 5d10ro1o10k3 17

[+2 Points, +Great Potential (Sincerity), a FR]

And it was all delivered with perfect decorum!

Dragon 4. Air. Etiquette TN 6.: 3d10o10k2 14

[+2 Points]

[Sum: +6 Points, +1 Air, +1 to Courtier, Great Potential (Courtier, Sincerity, Benten's Blessing]
