Lore Training (Mandatory Event)

by Vutall
In the afternoon, the sensei bring the students into the dojo itself, where various scrolls and books have been laid out, each station having an elder monk of the brotherhood at it.

"Due to the nature of schooling you have all recieved, the Brotherhood has agreed to lend us the use of some of their sensei for this afternoon to teach you all on subjects that are less well known within the Empire, but deemed of great importance."

Once each student takes a station, they are instructed to pick a series of subjects and then are given the proper materials to study for an hour and a half before the brotherhood sensei quizzes them on the material they have read.

This could have gone better for Mai. Despite the stories her brother told her about the Ivory Kingdoms, it didn't seem to help. Even guessing didn't.

And while she did study about the Spirit Realms, none of the questions seem to match what she said. So, she guessed. The senseis were impressed. Apparently, she had guessed right.

She did well on the lore about ghosts. Apparently, first hand experience helps a lot with that sort of thing.

Kokyou takes the three books he knew he wouldn't fail. Taking a few notes of things her already knew, the Mantis boy replies to the basic questions of when exactly the Pavarre appeared –– he had learned from the previous question the other day.

When questioned about the location of the Ivory Kingdom, he pointed at a non-existing space out of the map of the Empire. Quite on spot, in fact.

When asked in which Spiritual Realm Suitengu lived, he replies, "Whithin Daidoji Yono's Locker. Aye!"

Academic excellence was Aiichiro's specialty. He knew obscure details of both Architecture and the Nezumi culture... But when they saw he was well-versed and sent him questions on shugenja rituals, he could answer them without fault, detailing how shugenjas of the Kitsune, Unicorn and Phoenix did their rituals, better than many shugenja themselves.

Dao had heard students whispering about ghosts, but apparently that just sent him down the wrong path and the monk shook huis head sadly at the boy's gullibility in believing rumor and gossip over true facts.

He proved more knowledgeable on the other chosen subjects however, and the monk was left with a positive impression of the young Dragon.

Nobuko sat down for the class and though she was not strictly familiar with most of the topics through formal training, after the Sensei had reviewed several, she realized she knew quite a bit more than originally thought. Things she had picked up living in an Otomo household, training with the Kakita, and general conversations with superiors and peers over the years. She was rather pleased with herself in the end, and the confidence she was able to show in the answers she gave to the questions presented her.

Haruki hates to admit it, but being a cat sure did help with his quizzes today! For some reason, the monk who gave him questions asked a lot of questions about cats and how they hunt. Just thinking about being in that body makes Haruki almost gag when the monk wasn't looking, he was afraid he might be coughing hairballs when he woke up this morning. Thankfully the next questions were about shugenjas and what their spells did, all of which were simple enough spells to where he was able to have actually seen in a mock battle with all of them. It was harder to put into words, but he made it through thanks to how he trained with Doji-sensei. Lastly was a quiz on all things Yomi, a thing that Haruki made sure to study in great detail for the sake of the voice inside his head. Recalling it all was a simple matter after that.

Ginkarasu had learned so much and he tried to mimic the confidence Aiichiro had. It only really worked when he was asked about the Architecture of castles, because of that two day period that the Kaiu had talked about nothing else.

Jiro's time with the monks is spent discussing art, nature, and spirits like a young Percy Shelley. Not that there ever was an old Percy Shelley. His positions are well-defended, and, despite being at first really only an average mind, he does demonstrate the potential to become the erudite sort of villain the Scorpion needs right now.

This was the type of event that Yotsuo was most looking forward to for the day. He had been hoping he'd be able to further deepen his understanding of spirits and the realms they come from. During the more mystical discussions he participated actively, but it was discussion of the realms that got his greatest interest and the most feedback, sharing information from firsthand experience of them with fellow students and sensei alike.

It was tough being inside studying, sitting still and just trying to remember enough to please the sensei. She knew it was an honor to get this advanced study, and so she did her best, but she was honestly lucky that she'd been handed a book about wild horses and a really readable one full of ghost stories.

Unfortunately, it seemed like a lot of the tales her grandmother had told her of the Unicorn's time out in the Burning Sands was...incorrect? More likely out of date. Things changed, and surely grandma wouldn't have lied to her. Maybe she should have spent less time on the ghost stories and actually cracked the history scroll.

Ichiro grit his teeth and did his best to talk about what he knew but most of it was folklore and hearsay with little solid evidence to give him confidence.

He knew their knowledge would be tested again but he hadn't wanted it to be so soon, his good mood from the earlier combat training quickly waned as he read over the questions and tried his best to remember what he could of the gaijin cultures, surely a subject he should be well versed in but obviously not well enough as he couldn't put anything worth while about the burning sands down. Though he did happen to retain some details about the Ivory kingdoms.

He thought about delving more into gaijin knowledge but decided ghosts sounded cool and they were but not enough to really retain anything.

Sakura expected to find a nice comfy spot to nap in for this. She looked bored as the topic moved on, until she heard someone mention Ratlings. It twigged something in her mind, and she raised her hand.

"Ano...Do you mean Nezumi? They're like, human sized rats that like stealing things. Really old race, like older than humans old. Also human sized. Live in groups called um...Warrens, and tribes. My father knew some!"

There was a few looks of surprise at the Doji, but nobody could dispute she was correct.

She then got involved in the elements talk, talking about how the elements could be shaped and they were all joined together by the Void, which could also be called upon by talented shugenja.

All in all, Sakura did good!

Another trivia contest! Shiso was good in winging those. The key advice was: don't answer the question you've been asked; answer the question you wish you'd been asked. It worked every time.

"I think your question neatly corresponds with the intricate designs of the inner castle of Kyuden Miya..."

"Let me start with the anecdote on how a story of a certain ubume turned out and I'll follow from that..."

"Ah, medicinal properties of subalpine plants! Consider the red mint..."

Tanshin welcomed the classroom atmosphere after a tiring morning that stretched his untrained body in ways he was unaccustomed to.

Rather than focus on his strengths, he endeavored to expand his knowledge in areas he was unfamiliar with. Rumours were running rampant about supernatural encounter, so he sought out the monks teaching about Ghosts and the Spirit Realms. Gaijin were just as foreign to him, so he spent some time with the monk focusing on those studies.

by Kitsune Setsuna

  • Seated at a small desk which looked very much like the table he had flung earlier, Setsuna pointed at an older monk who was in the room and was seated in front of the station labeled for Lore: Ghosts. "Monk-sama." The shugenja shifted position to allow himself to bow low, nose touching the floor. "If you would kindly oblige me, and be my resource on yurei, I would be ever humbled, honored, and most grateful." After all... the instructions were to pick a series of subjects and then given the proper materials to study. What more proper material than a man who had likely seen ghosts with his own eyes?

While the monk raised a brow, he ambled over and sat opposite of the desk. Some hot tea was served for the two of them, and the shugenja listened as the man explained the basics to him.

All humans have a spirit, known as reikon. When a person dies, the reikon leaves the body and enters Meido, where it waits for the proper funeral and post-funeral rites to be performed so that it may join its ancestors. If this is done correctly, the reikon is believed to be a protector of the living family and to return yearly in the month of Shinjo during the Bon Festival to receive thanks.

If the person dies, however, in a sudden or violent manner such as murder or suicide, if the proper rites have not been performed, or if they are influenced by powerful emotions such as a desire for revenge, love, jealousy, hatred or sorrow, the reikon is believed to transform into a yūrei which can then bridge the gap back to the physical world. The emotion or thought need not be particularly strong or driven. Even innocuous thoughts can cause a death to become disturbed. Once a thought enters the mind of a dying person, their yūrei will come back to complete the action last thought of before returning to the cycle of reincarnation.

The yūrei then resides in Ningen-do until it can be laid to rest, either by performing the missing rituals, or resolving the emotional conflict that still ties it to the physical plane. If the rituals are not completed or the conflict left unresolved, the yūrei will persist in its haunting. Oftentimes the lower the social rank of the person who died violently or who was treated harshly during life, the more powerful as a yūrei they would return. There are plenty of stories about this, the monk explained, but he would stand up and offer a small bow so the Kitsune could study for other subjects.

Nature and Spirit Realms were less... foreign, to Setsuna, so he simply allotted his remaining time to reading. Two fat books would be slapped onto the low desk he was sat, and he pored over them. The boy was a nerd and thus very thoroughly engrossed by them. When the time came to demonstrate his knowledge via quizzes, he passed with flying colors.
