Despite the rain, Hida Goroharu has all of the students out on the training grounds. Each of them is paired with an Imperial Ashigaru inside of a small ring. Next to each ring lies a collection of various items such as a chair legs, metal rods, bricks, and other non-weapon items one would find in a br, in the street, or in a supply camp.

"Good morning!"

The large, burly man says with enthusiasm, and then goes into his instructions for the training session, walking around the grounds and observing the various pairs conducting the drills.

Raining. Kokyou smiled. His ancestor was indeed looking favorably on him from the Heavens.

"Jolly mornin' Hida-sensei. May Osano-wo bless us all." He greets their teaches, and finds himself a sparring match.

Knowing he would once again put up a good show of the blood of Thunder running in his veins, the Mantis boy gets ready to show his rolling cescendo of wobbly wave attacks against the Imperial ashigaru.

The obvious option to distract his opponent was a chair leg into his opponent's crotch. Soon after that, Kokyou applies his famous suplex, and slams the ashigaru's head on the ground with the flip. Unfortunately, Kokyou didn't shouted a kiai loud enough for the Thunder above to hear him.

Perhaps it was that he knew how rudimentary the tasks before him were, but Dao's heart wasn't in the training this morning; and it showed.

He went through the motions, performed all that was asked of him, but his mind was elsewhere, his focus on proving himself in other arenas where he wasn't expected to perform as well.

So as the rain sprionkled down from the heavens and matted his hair to his head, Dao punched, grabbed and throttled his opponent well enough to prove his skill, but not enough to earn another ally.

Fortune must be favoring Haruki today; yesterday he showed off his martial prowess with a spar, and today he gets to do the same thing again. Maybe he can impress Hida-sensei today. Picturing an assailant in the middle of a court, he starts with tripping his opponent, then slams into him with a chair. As his opponent tried to get away, he took hold of both arms and tied them together with a bit of rope. Textbook yojimbo moves, but it does not impress anyone. They already saw him do well yesterday, why should today have been any different.

Saburo was not exactly confident coming into this event. Yes, he'd received some personal instruction from the Hida before coming to this. That did not change that yesterday's display had been less than perfect and that no amount of having been trained beforehand was a solution to his limitations. However, he was not one to give in to doubt, nor to the screams in his mind. He was greater than this, greater than all those things that limited him.

Facing the ashigaru, he bowed formally and, when he rose, his fist was like a darting snake. In the next test, he easily and quickly brought up one of the metal rods in a way very much like one would use a jo. It lashed out, catching the ashigaru behind the knee and bringing them down without doing too much harm. When he moved in to demonstrate his grapple, it was commanding enough to bring the man out of the ring easily, though perhaps not enough to draw more of Goroharu's attention. He'd learned his lessons well enough, it seemed, as far as the big man was concerned.

Still, for the moment he heard no shrieking in his mind. He bowed to the Ashigaru once again, thanking him for his assistance.

Ginkarasu stood out in the rain, bouncing on his feet. It was always the right decision to try and pay attention when a Hida was going to teach you how to fight. And they could come at you from any direction! Hard!

He tried to prove that by coming at his opponent with a quick kick, but managed to just barely telegraph the maneuver and miss.

Calming down he was handed a chair leg. A little lost he tried to look for a chair to attach it to at first, but then caught on when his opponent came at him with a bottle. He wasn't fully aware of his new strength but did manage to get the bottle out of his opponent's grasp.

The grapple was a lot harder, especially when he slipped in the mud and brought himself and enemy down... but somehow managed to stay on top!

Mai started off with the moves her sensei showed her. It was a form that focused on quick strikes and moving around.

Then, she moved on to the Improvised weapons. She could have fit in any bar with her ability. She was especially proud of her breaking the stick over the ashigaru and then jabbing him with the stick.

Finely, came the grappling portion where she easily pinned her opponent.

by Utaku Nesrin
While Nesrin had certainly been in a fight or two, her formal training in actual wrestling was nonexistent, but she was a battle maiden and had an image to keep up.

So she scooped up a chair leg on the way and flung herself into the ring, into the rain, and into an ashigaru who may not have expected such ferocity from the girl. With the short, improvised staff held horizontally in both hands before her, she leapt at the woman, aiming to catch her throat and take her down quickly. The chair leg was caught, and bare feet skidded in the mud as they fought for control of the fray.

Growling the names, Nesrin called on her lineage to give her the strength she needed. "For Kyo, for Tamiko, for Aliyah, for Menna..." At each she dug her toes in deeper, pushed just a bit more...until the ashigaru gave way, let go, and rolled to avoid being borne to the mud.

Which was all the opening needed to cast aside the chair leg and simply grab hold of her opponent, dragging them both into the mud, where spring nights catching and drying newborn foals proved useful practice for pinning down limbs slick with rain and mud. Her technique was entirely instinctive, which got her a long and detailed correction from Hida-sama.

Nesrin stood muddy and dripping, listening to it all, crowing inside at how much fun it had been. She would definitely learn something today.

Again with the physical combat! She didn't think she'd ever be in a real life situation where she would need to be defending herself, but of course this dojo didn't care about those specifics, they cared about making sure the students lived up to whatever ideals the Ruby Champion had for them. Not unexpectantly, Nobuko did very poorly with trying to use anything not a weapon as a weapon. She also did very poorly on trying to hold her opponent - not that she tried very hard in the end, she didn't want to injure her hands.

However, she did surprise herself a bit at how effective a well-placed kick or two ended up being against her paired opponent for the class.

Bayushi Jiro presented himself in the ring with the sort of non-stance stance that a courtier often displays in these situations. Honestly, he would feel better with a sword in his hand, but he supposed that in the off chance he was attacked in a bath with his wakizashi out of reach, he'd be glad of the instruction. Maybe. Although his yojimbo was going to be in soooo much trouble.

He stayed mostly non-challant as his challenger approached with murderous intent, but then there was a flash of movement, and the opponent was down with a rabbit-punch to the throat! Where had it come from? And where had that teacup come from? No one knew for sure, but now it was in Jiro's hand, and Jiro was using it to dig into his opponent's kidney-region. When the teacup broke, Jiro rolled up his sleeves and back off, letting his opponent rise. In a real fight of course, he would have been kicking him, because they don't get up from the kicking, but here he had to adhere to rules for his own safety. Very well, he would "wrassle." His hand shot forward and seized the opponent by the thumb of is right hand. Then came the bending, the crying, the collapsing to the knees, and finally, the shouting of "uncle."

Yea, verily, the Scorpion style was not to be mocked.

The rain was welcome to Yotsuo. He enjoyed the light drizzle and thought to use it to his advantage in today's lessons. Being smaller than may of the others in the dojo, he already realized his advantage of being able to slip out out of his opponent's grasp. With the added benefit of being a bit more slippery when he was soaked, he rolled up up his sleeves to expose more skin, giving fewer places to grab a hold of. His tactic and the training from the day before lent themselves to an exceptional performance. But even more so, when it came to displaying his skill with improvised weapons, he was even more resourceful thanks to the rain. He removed his wet top and used it much like a whip or a rope, tangling up his opponents and surprising them with a very odd technique.

After his training session the other day the challenge put forward this day hardly seemed like a challenge at all. Despite the slickness of the rain the poor ashigaru never stood a chance and Ichiro easily struck through their defenses with hand and rod then promptly took them to the ground into a submission hold.

Ichiro was smiling wide and ready to go for another combat lesson he bowed to the ashigaru and then began his drills an incredible start his punches and kicks landed and were so well formed that one might believe he trained with the Togashi monks if they knew he wasn't a Moto through and through.

He rolled and picked up a chair leg diving back into his foe with fervor landing multiple strikes before discarding it and moving to a textbook arm lock take down, a bariqu technique his sensei had shown him.

he got up and bowed to his opponent hardly able to keep the smile from his lips as he saw Goroharu watching him and could see a hint of approval in the large man's eyes.

Somehow.

The rain made Kenji's clothes wet and heavy and his skin cold and damp.

He bowed to the Ashigaru and started the training.
After a few punches and kicks Kenji managed to hit the Ashigaru properly, but that was not enough.

After a leg sweep, Kenji picked up a metal rod from the ground and tried to handle it. It took some getting used to, but he would do his best.

The fight with the Ashigaru continued, the metal rod lay heavy in Kenji's hand and he slowly began to doubt if he could hit with it at all, but in a lucky strike he could finally hit the Ashigaru.

The final test was coming. Kenji concentrated on the lessons that Mya Wyn and Hida-Sensei had taught him. He went into a wide-legged stance and lowered his center of gravity and then reached for the Ashigaru. After a short struggle it was over, the Ashigaru was thrown outside the ring.

Panting he cleared the ring again. He wiped the hair from his face and watched his fellow students confidently.

by Kitsune Setsuna

  • Kitsune Setsuna was still on the fence on whether or not he liked or disliked rain. Sometimes it was a relief from the heat, and always welcome for crops. Other times it was heavy and despondant, leaking into houses and making it impossible to play outside without catching ill. An upturned hand would extend outwards before he stepped outside, testing how strong it was. Each pitter patter struck his pale hand, soon a small puddle forming within his palm. Satisfied, he allowed the water to fall free as he wiped his hand against his side and stepped into the rain.

It was not long before his long beautiful locks were plastered to his head and continuously blocking his eyes like some kind of wet dog. He had to keep pushing the locks out of his vision to focus on Hida-sensei, taking care to listen to the brawny man's instructions and mentally reciting them in his mind. Physical tests were his weakness so far, especially in martial arts. His hands flexed, and the boy tried to remember every moment he'd spent in the dojo yesterday, including the part where the Unicorn had flung him out of the ring.

Weak. That part did sting at his pride a little... lot. But he would lean into the strengths the Moto had suggested to try and pass today's test. As the stocky Imperial Ashigaru stepped up, Setsuna would bow nice and low. His hair fell into his face again and a small exasperated sigh could be heard, but he stood up and began to ready himself. Balance better, drop lower in stance. His center of gravity dropped, and his left foot retreated backwards, finding a solid spot behind him. Lower than yesterday, and a bit foreign still, but it felt... less incorrect. He wasn't sure if it was okay to be this much shorter than his opponent, but notes and such would have to be compared after class, maybe. Arms were extended outward in an open hand position, and a soft exhale of air as he began to breath deeply in and out. Suddenly, motion; instead of going for a punch or palm strike, his rear leg snaked forward and snapped into the ashigaru's calf, before retreating and finding it's place once more.

The Ashigaru was well padded with bogu, and after being struck by the kick that didn't seem to do any lasting harm, he reached out to the side and grabbed a long metal rod, striking his palm once before readying it to strike. Setsuna, not wanting to lose track of his opponent, knew behind him there was some bricks, bottles, wooden sticks, on the table just behind him. He stepped backwards, reaching behind him and-- caught nothing but air? Visible confusion painted itself on his face as the man stepped into a swing at him forcing him backwards, and dared himself to look behind him. The table was now... empty. Seemed like the chair legs (he would have to ask what a chair was later) were very popular among the students, and all that remained was the table itself. It was very pretty and well painted; perhaps a table for a solo occupant at a bar who wished to not be disturbed. It would be a shame if something were to... happen to it.

    Image

Or maybe this was a part of the test. A pivot, and both of his hands found secure purchase around each leg. With a grunt followed by a loud kiai, the Kitsune swung the (thankfully small) table in a sweeping horizontal arc to strike the very surprised Ashigaru in the side. Once the table completed it's duty, it was released with a loud clatter to the floor. It surely was a test of strength, to swing it fast enough to be used, but the element of surprise tipped him over the edge.

However the ashigaru would not go down so quickly and easily. The rod dropped, and he rushed for the Kitsune with his arms outstretched; every actual grappler would be ashamed of the man's technique, as if he was trying to strangle the shugenja and not pin him down. Imagine that. This time, Setsuna would not try to withstand this approach, but flowed, doing his best to remember a move that one of the other students had pulled off yesterday. As the man's arms came into range, he reached out and grabbed ahold of the bulky armored sleeves. Gravity and momentum would do the next part as he fell backwards and down, raising a foot skyward and sending it into the Ashigaru's gut; not in a kick, but to continue the man's movement forwards. The much larger figure would gracelessly fly over and come to a crash, in which the Fox had to be quick.

A hop up and he rushed for the man's... arm. Grabbing it by the sleeve, he slid one foot underneath the torso, now placing the arm against his thigh. The other foot stepped hurriedly past the man's head, planting a bare heel (he wasn't going to soak his tabi for this) next to the man's ear. Once more, gravity would do it's job and he fell with a wet splat, pulling the arm tightly against his chest while his hips rose upwards, the man's thumb pointed skyward. A cross armlock, a bit more panicky in it's execution, but one that got the job done.

Kitsune Setsuna could not take on a whole man. But his arm? Yes. He would hold the man in this position until he tapped out on his leg. Instantly the held one would be released, and he would leap up. With his turn over, he would bow and leave the ring for whoever was next up in this spot.

Sasaiko takes a while to find her footing. When she does, though, she proves formidable with a bucket, and there is doubtlessly a Mantis who is flustered at seeing her solid build deliver a stunning suplex to her opponent.

Adequate, she thinks as she bows herself out.
